Gen2
Otis is proud to introduce the breakthrough
Gen2™ COMFORT system—a re-invention of
core elevator technology. The Gen2 COMFORT
system combines modern technologies and
materials with 21st century objectives such as
energy efficiency, environmental responsibility,
passenger safety and comfort, increased usable
space, streamlined architectural profiles and
time saving installation.
At the system’s core is a coated steel belt – the
first major advance in elevatoring technology
in over 150 years. Combined with the equally
innovative concept of smaller, energy saving
machines, and the low noise controller and
drive, this radical innovation produces a state of
the art elevator system.
The Gen2 COMFORT system represents more
than a collection of new components. A re-
invention of the most basic assumptions
governing vertical transportation, it takes the
elevator to its next evolutionary level.

Simple and Logical in DesignUnlike traditional elevator ropes that wrap steel cords around a flexible core, the new flat-coated steel belt wraps a flexible polyurethane jacket around steel cords. This innovation allows the size of the Gen2 machine to be significantly smaller than a conventional geared machine.
Durable, Flexible BeltsOnly three millimetres thick and 30mm wide, the coated steel belts are more durable and flexible than the industry standard, heavy woven steel cables. The belts are 20% lighter, last up to three times longer, and incorporate more wires than a conventional steel cable—a total of 588 high tensile grade steel cords per belt. The belt’s superior flexibility allows it to easily bend around smaller diameter sheaves. Additionally, Otis has developed PULSE™, an electronic device that continually monitors the status of the belt cords.
The belts’ polyurethane jacket provides better traction than conventional cable. Flat belts also have more surface area at the point of contact, which significantly reduces wear on the sheave.
Compact, Efficient MachineThe compact Gen2 machine does not require a machine room and can be easily positioned on a beam at the top of the hoistway. This eliminates interference with the buildings roofline and allows architects to design cleaner profiles. The light, compact machine consumes less energy and its synchronous motor with embedded permanent magnets further reduces heat loss, enhancing the machine’s ability to use energy efficiently.
Reliable ControllerDesigned for groups of up to four cars, the modular controller incorporates a new generation of printed circuit boards and software to provide optimal response times. The digital closed-loop Variable Frequency (VF) drive, with vector control technology, further increases efficiency and accuracy, and a digital speed encoder ensures correct car speed and positioning. The result is a system of exceptional reliability.
When a hall button is pressed, Otis’ Relative System Response (RSR) dispatcher instantaneously selects the most eligible car in the elevator group to answer the call. In a split-second, the RSR dispatcher analyses a set of parameters based on response time estimates and ideal group control practices. By maximising system performance, RSR enables passengers to benefit from dramatically reduced waiting times.
Located on the top or second top floor, the controller can be embedded or surface mounted. The controller is available in a range of finishes to harmonize with various door finishes.

Door Protection Device Otis’ LAMBDA® LC infrared curtain door protection system casts an invisible safety net of beams across the elevator entrance. The door protection device scans with more than 70 infrared beams per second, in a response time of less than .1 second. If the system detects an obstruction, the doors swiftly and smoothly open to avoid any contact.
Door SystemsOtis offers different door systems to configure to the building’s passenger demands.
The car and landing doors are driven by a direct current (DC) permanent magnet motor. A speed encoder mounted on the operator axis controls the doors’ opening and closing positions. This allows accurate and smooth operation, enhancing the system’s safe performance.
For higher traffic applications, a closed-loop VF door operator is available. It allows flexibility in adjusting and setting door operation, meeting a variety of different operating profiles to suit the building’s needs.
Quiet RideA variety of factors combine to help make the Gen2 COMFORT system one of the quietest ever produced. The polyurethane-coated belt eliminates the metal-to-metal sound of conventional steel cables against the driving sheave. The ride is further enhanced by padding that isolates the car platform from the car frame and the machine beams from the hoistway walls.
Environment Friendly Protecting the natural environment through minimum consumption of natural resources and the safe disposal of wastes is a primary focus for Otis.
The Gen2 COMFORT manufacturing facility has received the ISO 14001 certification for environmentally responsible production methods. The need for oil in the machine is eliminated by the absence of a gearbox and the use of permanently sealed bearings. Unlike steel cables, the belts require no lubrication.

Standard Features
Control
Automatic Car Return When there are no further car or hall calls, the car will return and automatically park at a specified landing.
Cut-off Hall Call Switch When activated this feature disables all hall calls, but allows the normal operation of car calls. When the car has no further demand, it parks with its doors opened at the last landing served.
Full Collective Operation Registered car and hall calls are answered in the order in which the landings are reached. The direction of travel is established by the first registered car command or hall call.
Load Non-stop When a car is loaded to a predetermined percentage of capacity, weight-sensing devices are activated, causing the car to bypass further hall calls.
Separate Car and Hall Call Door Time
The time that an elevator door remains open after a stop differs between hall and car calls. Generally, more time is needed for a car to respond to hall calls.
Communication
Car Position Indicator This feature displays car position, running direction, fire service and overload signals.
Hall Position Indicator This feature includes a 16-segment LED position and direction indicator.
Comfort
Brake Drop Soft This feature allows adjustment of the braking time, thereby controlling the brake noise level.
Extra Door Time This feature extends the length of time the doors remain open.
Fan (Automatic) To save energy, the fan will automatically turn off when there is no call signal within a designated period.
Emergency
Emergency Car Light Unit To ensure the minimum lighting requirement in a car, a rechargeable emergency supply will automatically switch on if the normal lighting supply fails.
Emergency Recall Operation This feature facilitates the rescue and evacuation of trapped passengers. When activated by a switch in the controller, all operations will be terminated and passengers will be released at the nearest landing.
Safety
Delayed Drive Protection This feature monitors the elevator to ensure it does not exceed the 45 seconds run time and the time for full travel at a rated speed plus 10 seconds.
Door Time Protection When the doors fail to open or close, the elevator will remove itself from group control, retry to open or close its doors and sound the buzzer in the car. After three unsuccessful attempts, the car will be shut down.
Misuse Prevention
Anti-Nuisance Car Call Protection When the weight of passengers in the car is not more than 10% of rated car duty, and four or more car calls are registered, all car calls are cancelled automatically.
Car Call Cancellation When a car call button is incorrectly selected, it can be cancelled by pressing twice on the same button.
Nudging If the doors are prevented from closing for a fixed period of time, a buzzer sounds and the doors begin to close at a reduced speed.
Service
Car Call to Bottom Landing This button is located in the controller. When pressed, the car is moved to the bottom landing.
Car Call to Top Landing This button is located in the controller. When pressed, the car is moved to the top landing.
