Welcome toGEMS World Academy-Etoy, International School!

A Reception Our commitment to parents starts from the moment you walk into our information-rich reception area

Audrey PeverelliHead of School

My professional vision has always been to empower young people to follow their passions and at the same time contribute to making our world a better place.

GEMS World Academy-Etoy makes this vision real. It is our job to equip children with the knowledge and understanding to be ready for any challenge on their life-journey. It is also our responsibility to help parents understand their key role in that mission.

Our mission is to promote inquiring, knowledgeable, reflective and caring learners who develop personal skills to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. As educators, our role is to unveil children’s talents and passions.

We must provide opportunities for students to try new things, think creatively, be able to understand different perspectives and cultures and discover what they might enjoy doing in life.

Using this approach we can encourage children to become life-long learners.

I look forward to meeting you and showing you our school in action.

MusicKnowing and practicing the art of music is vital to the life-long development of a child’s mind and spirit. Consequently, students are given ample opportunity to learn a wide range of instruments and encouraged to create music through rhyming, listening, history and culture – as well as through participation in music ensembles and the choir.

We also periodically take advantage of some outstanding local and international musicians to supplement teaching.

Music academyIn addition to learning music within the school programme, students can take individual instrumental and vocal lessons.

The Music Academy provides a convenient, secure, inspiring place with high-level professional instructors who bring a wealth of practical, real-world experience in their subject area, are pedagogically trained and remain actively engaged in professional work.

Language learningThe curriculum at GWA-Etoy is delivered in English. However, given our location, French is given significant status and taught 4 hours per week. We make sure that students are placed according to their level and are stimulated to broaden their French skills. Between Grades 6 and 9, either Spanish or German is also studied, with a further option in Grade 10. Students can choose to obtaina bi-lingual IB Diploma.

Maybe they don’t realise it, but the children are learning in a different way and it is more challenging to learn in a more creative way. I really like this and the children are so happy.

Maruscha KabelParent of 2 students at GEMS World Academy-Etoy

Language learning – including a mother-tongue programme – is also supported via our World Language Learning Centre (WLLC).

This is open not only to students but also staff, parents, the local community and businesses. Day, evening, weekend and ICT integrated learning help make this a reality. The WLLC is also an examination centre for several languages.

Student well-being and parental engagementParental engagement programme GEMS schools offer parents and care givers many opportunities to get involved in school life. From fundraisers to trash clean-up or tree-planting, adults are welcome into the school to help or further improve the school environment. Involvement is important to help people feel connected to the school, and it’s an excellent way to build a sense of community among parents, teachers and students.

GWA-Etoy has a comprehensive calendar of workshops for parents on both the IB curriculum and other areas that directly affect student learning, such as, “Safe use of social networking” and “Making good life choices”.

Recognising parent’s lifestylesDaily planning is designed to take account of the busy lifestyles of parents, some of whom are new to the area. This means we’re able to offer high-quality after school provision, both before school and until 7 p.m. in the evening.

Wellbeing at GEMSAt GWA-Etoy, the Wellbeing team developed highly innovative strategies to support the needs of all our students. A bespoke wellbeing curriculum is delivered to all MYP students once a week in their grade groups, dedicated homeroom teachers meet students every day and they have a real voice in decisions via the Student Council.

Our team of enthusiastic staff provide opportunities for students to develop and meet individualised goals each term and our parent community regularly engage with the work of the wellbeing team through individual meetings and our parent workshops. Our work includes the development of mindfulness in school life, particularly with the dot.be www.mindfulnessinschools.org programme.

Regular communicationEvery student is given school diaries to take home for daily discussion with their parents. Regular email contact is maintained between teachers and students as well as with their parents and three-way conferences (teacher/parent/student) are well regarded and commonplace. Parent communication also includes regular newsletters, parent workshops, coffee mornings and seminars, as well as access to GWA-Etoy’s internal communication platform.

Physical and Health Education (PHE)Sport plays an essential part of every child’s development and is an intrinsic element of our curriculum, backed up by facilities that are second to none.

Our PYP students have 2 hours of PHE every week which increases to 3 hours a week in the MYP. In addition, students have a wealth of choice of different sports proposed in the after-school extra-curricular activities.

SkiPart of our programme for Grades 1 to 11 are ski days. All of our students are encouraged to learn, improve and enjoy skiing or snowboarding in one of the surrounding ski regions. Students are placed in groups according to their level and accompanied by professional ski instructors and our teachers.

SportsTo practice all these sports, we have a full-sized all-weather playing field to under-18 competition standard, plus an all-weather Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and a 100 metre sprint track with high and long jump areas. Our Sports Centre hosts a 6-court multi-sport area, dance and fitness studios, a climbing wall, an indoor 25 metre 6-lane pool and a children’s learning pool.

All our sports facilities are open to the community by special arrangement and GWA-Etoy parents are welcome to use the fitness and swimming pools at dedicated times.

Early yearsSapphire classGWA-Etoy has a dedicated Little GEMS Nursery for 2-3 year olds. We call them our Sapphire class. Everything is linked to the Pre-school and makes full use of the school’s play areas, learning equipment, library and digital learning resources, as well as the outdoor learning areas.

Learning philosophyThe learning philosophy is based on the IB Primary Years Programme, complemented by unique Little GEMS programmes. Routines, comfortable sleep, rest areas and a healthy approach to food and nutrition ensure that our Sapphires are provided with the key elements needed for healthy growth and development. Colours, textures and equipment are used to encourage enquiry, experimentation, imagination and creativity.

To support children’s understanding of people and countries, activities are carried out in English, French and other languages too.

The Varkey Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children throughout the world. Our mission is that every child should have a good teacher. We do this through building teacher capacity, advocacy campaigns to promote excellence in teaching practice at the highest levels of policy making and providing grants to partner organisations that offer innovative solutions in support of our mission.

Philantropy at GEMSSocially conscious studentsGWA-Etoy’s students have a social conscience. In line with our core value of “Global Citizenship”, students learn to appreciate the true meaning of compassion – something that the modern world is desperate for. They do so by leading and participating in charitable activities that serve not only the local community but also the wider international community.

Service as actionService as action at GWA-Etoy empowers students to make independent decisions to take responsible action within our community. Responsible action will challenge and inspire students to consider their impact both locally and globally. Action will be linked to learning that has taken place through inquiry, and will take place in collaboration with others. Examples of service activities within the MYP include: planning and running sports activities for younger students, creating an eco-garden, working with l’Espérance centre for disabled children and adults in Etoy village, reading with Kindergarten children, working with l’Oasis des Vétérans for abandoned animals.

We are proud to say that over the past 50 years, GEMS students, teaching staff and corporate staff have raised over US$ 40 million for charities around the world.

Key partnershipsWe are the proud convenors of the Global Education & Skills Forum. This forum is a crucial annual conference which brings together world leaders from the public, private and social sectors to work towards education, equity and employment for all.

We collaborate with partners including UNESCO, the Asian Development Bank and Education International, working to identify ground-breaking research, educational models and world-changing strategies which will give children across the world a quality education and an equal start in life.
