Dear families & friends

Eco warriors This week the eco warriors will participate in a workshop on Biodiversity provided by Greening Australia and Cardinia Shire. The students will do a survey and create a power point presen-tation. Gembrook Primary School is one of only eight schools selected for this project! We were considered for this project because we are one of 27 schools in the state with a five star sustainability rating. Sustainability is integrated into our daily practices and informs the school’s resource management. The teams of eco warriors in our school over recent years have promoted the responsible use of resources. Last week at as-sembly, our eco warriors reminded us to dispose of our waste thoughtfully. At school we compost, feed the chooks and have worm farms for green waste. Sustainability is one of the cross curriculum areas in the new national curriculum, AusVELS.

Japanese Day Japanese Day was a great celebration of our learning about Japanese culture and language. Many students dressed in red & white for the day and during the parade we were treated to a song from the grade 1 / 2 students. The sushi was enjoyed by everyone and the Kendo performance was excellent. Many thanks to our Japanese teacher, Meg Ichikawa, for all her hard work and preparation.

100 Night Readers Congratulations to our 100 night readers. A group of these 100 night readers enjoyed a play at the skate park last week to celebrate their achievement. Reading at home and at school is an important basis for further learning. Thank you for ensuring your child reads as often as possible. This is an essential part of the home/school partnership.

GEMBOOK WEEK August 18-22 A notice regarding our GemBOOK Week activities has been distributed to all families. The Book Fair will be open each day before and after school. Please read the program and come along to some of the activities planned for our school commu-nity. The week begins with a dress up parade at 9am on Mon-day; please dress up as your favourite book character. School assembly will be in the multi at 11.40. The MLC Choir will be performing.

100 Days of School Friday August 15 @ 2:15 On Friday afternoon we will celebrate 100 days of schooling for the Foundation Students. Parents have been invited to the Junior Learning Centre to join in some fun and games!

EDEC Basketball Once again our senior students were recognised for their great sportsmanship and respectful behaviour. Fantastic! Well done to all of the senior students who competed in a fun day of bas-ketball with students from the local schools. This is a valuable transition activity for these students who will begin secondary schooling in the next year or two. Thank you to our team of teachers and parents who were coaches and scorers for the games. Thank you to Sam Alabaster for organising the uni-forms.

Trainee Teachers The teaching team have the wonderful opportunity to have students who are training to be teachers work within their learning centres. This week we welcome – Josephine, Suzanne, Natalie, Helen and Tara to our school for a three week place-ment. We are fortunate to have these trainee teachers in our classrooms—our students gain much from having the extra teacher in the classroom.

Surveys It is an understatement to say this is the time of the year for surveys! At present we have two surveys on the go! Our school has a Parent Opinion Survey that closes tomorrow. Thank you to all those who have completed and returned their surveys. 100% return is required, so I would appreciate the last few please. Please send these to the office. The second survey is

on assessment and reporting. This has been emailed separately to families.

Car Raffle Thank you to the many families who were able to sell tickets for the Great Community Car Raffle. The school will receive a cheque for just over $1000 from Rotary later in the year from the sales of the tickets. Thank you everyone. The money raised from this event will be used for improving the school facilities. The buildings and grounds team and school council are looking at a piece of climbing playground equipment.

Outside School Hours Care Gembrook Primary School offers Before and After School Care

each day. A note regarding all the terrific activities was sent

home this week. There are some great activities offered to the

students at very affordable prices. All activities can be claimed

through the Child Care Benefit and Rebate Schemes which re-

duces the cost of the activities by half and in some instances

more than half. Please contact the school office for more de-

tails.

Enjoy your week!

Gembrook Primary School has a new and improved Facebook page - coordinated by parents and teach-ers from School Council. A page for family and friends of students to keep up to date with what's happening around the school.
