A gemstone is a crystallized mineral which has been masterfully cut and polished to create a precious gem. Theses stones are rare, very durable, and hard in nature. Gemstones are beautiful for their brilliance and shine. Some are colorless and look as though they are “on fire” while others are opaque. (You cannot see through them.) The most valuable of the gemstones is a diamond. Diamonds are the hardest-occurring substance known to man. A diamond ring is often given to a woman by a man when he asks her to marry him. Two things often mistaken for gemstones are pearls and amber. Pearls are an organic substance which comes from shells, and amber is a material that has been petrified. For each month of the year, a gemstone is assigned for those born in that month and is called a birthstone. For centuries, gemstones have been a sign of wealth and power, such as with the An- cient Egyptians and their pharaohs. Gemstones can be polished and cut depending on how hard they are by several different means. They can be tumbled, causing them to be shaped irregularly; cut en cabochon, a method used to make them round on top and flat on the bottom before being polished on a sandstone wheel, or they can be cut by a lathe. There are several different shapes to gemstones, including round, princess, emerald, marquis, pear, oval, baguette, trillion, and heart. The size of a gemstone is measured in carats.
