2 Introduction

2.1 High Voltage Circuit Breakers, Overview A Circuit Breaker (CB) is an automatically operated electrical switching device which can open or close an electrical circuit in a small fraction of time. It protects an electrical circuit in the event of an overload or short circuit by discontinuing the electrical flow during faulty conditions. In general, CBs consist of movable contacts for discontinuing the electrical flow. Whenever a fault is detected, these movable contacts start to separate, thereby reducing the contact area. This reduction in contact area leads to larger current density, which causes vaporization of the contact metal and the formation of an arc. The established arc acts as a connecting medium after the physical separations of the switching contacts. However, the flow of current is interrupted when the interrupting medium changes arc plasma into an isolating medium. Electrode vapor is the main source of charged particles in arc phenomena. However, the degree of ionization of the arc column depends on the characteristics of its surrounding medium, as the contact separation increases. (Iturregi, Torres, Zamora, O. Abarrategui, 2009)

The ever-growing demand for an electric power grid system to feed electricity with reliability and safety is pushing the demand for better switching devices worldwide. In transmission network systems, the High Voltage Circuit Breaker (HVCB) is used within substations for protection against faults. The definition of high voltage level varies generally but most countries such as the US, the UK, Russia, China and India consider a transmission system voltage of 110KV and above as high voltage levels.

HVCB are mainly used by utilities and large industries to control the electric power supplied to various equipments such as transformers, motors and capacitors or to other distribution feeders. The design and functioning of HVCB is complex due to its usage in substations at higher end voltages. Generally, high-voltage CBs are solenoid operated, with current sensing protective relays operated through current transformers. The main function of HVCB is to protect the electrical circuit in a substation against overloads or ground/earth faults.

2.2 High Voltage Circuit Breakers, Product Description Circuit breakers can be classified in many ways depending upon voltage class, construction type, interrupting medium type and structural features. HVCB is an example of the differentiation of circuit breakers on the basis of voltage class. Depending upon the quenching medium and method used for the interruption of current, HVCB are differentiated as:

Oil Circuit Breakers

Sulfurhexaflouride (SF6) Circuit Breakers

Vacuum Circuit Breakers

Oil Circuit Breakers were the first to be used at high voltages due to their ability to interrupt large currents. In oil CBs, the current interruption process involves the decomposition of oil into hydrogen and acetylene gas bubble. However, oil CBs are associated with issues of flammability and high maintenance cost. These drawbacks lead to the development of Air Blast and Air Magnetic circuit breakers. But they were not successful in the market due to their bulky and cumbersome designs.

SF6 and Vacuum CBs, the new generation of circuit breakers, are currently being widely used for high voltage applications. They are replacing oil and air CBs for high voltage applications although many CBs from the first generation, with oil and air as quenching medium, are still working.

The main advantage of SF6 CBs stems from the use of a superior quenching medium (Sulfurhexaflouride gas) which has higher dielectric strength or thermal conductivity. However, it also has some limitations and disadvantages. The SF6 gas used in CBs has been labeled as one of the major global warming gases after the XXXX session of Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held on 1 December 1997. Vacuum CBs have emerged as an alternative against SF6 CBs due to their environmental friendliness. Vacuum CBs are simple in construction with a small number of components, thus providing benefits of compact size, light weight and the ease of maintenance and inspection. However, Vacuum CBs are not as cost competitive as SF6 CBs. Therefore, SF6 CBs are predominantly gaining importance.
