PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTIn 1963, British composer Herbert Howells set the words of a fourth-century hymn by Prudentius in a grippingly poignant anthem for a Memorial Service in Washington DC following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing reflects the juxtaposition of earth’s sorrow and heaven’s joy —spare and haunting mortal grief evolving into the richness of eternal glory.

Gloriæ Dei Cantores worked extensively for many years with George Guest, who was a close friend of Howells, and his successor as Organist and Choirmaster at St. John’s College, Cambridge. The choir treasures the British choral tradition passed on to them, and acknowledges this piece as a gift to the Kennedy family (the choir’s Cape Cod

neighbors), and to the world.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTSwiss composer Frank Martin withheld his Mass for Double Choir for forty years, believing it to be unworthy of the Lord. “Martin’s faith, which he only wanted to express through music, was built on an intense need to worship God.” —Maria Martin, wife of Frank Martin

The a cappella setting of this mass requires a devotional solemnity and blend of unity and spirit, which are rooted in the choir’s daily worship. The Agnus Dei echoes the antiphonal chanting of the Liturgy of the Hours, each choir moving as its own expressive entity, almost like a conversation between heaven and earth, until the final “Dona nobis pacem,” when the two choirs join in one final blessing of peace.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTThe world recognizes Benjamin Britten’s centenary this year. His gifts of choral music—including the well-known War Requiem, Ceremony of Carols, and The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra—have become international favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. During the early years of the choir, international tours began with a month of study in Cambridge, England, under the tutelage of George Guest (St. John’s College), Stephen Cleobury (King’s College), and Mary Berry (Schola Gregoriana). It was during one of these extended study periods that the choir learned Britten’s A Boy Was Born and was introduced to this unique choral favorite Rejoice in the Lamb.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTWritten shortly after the death of his father, and during the death of his mother, Fauré’s Requiem was unusual at the time. Fauré wanted to convey an image of death without sting or fear, portraying “the very human feeling of faith in eternal rest. I see death as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience.” The choir has performed many Requiems that illuminate the hope of eternal life. In 2011, the choir toured sixteen cities in the United States, performing Mozart’s beloved Requiem with Philippe Entremont and the Munich Symphony. Previously, the choir also performed the Mozart Requiem with the Albanian Symphony in Tirana, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra in St. Petersburg, Russia.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTIn January 1945, Russian troops and Nazi occupiers were bitterly fighting on the north side of Budapest. Kodály lived through this battle in the cellar of the Budapest Opera House, and emerged only to find his city half destroyed and the streets littered with corpses. It was against this background that the Missa Brevis was completed early in 1945. The first performance took place in the cloakroom of the Budapest Opera House, as the Hungarians hid from the occupying German forces.

The choir’s international tours began in 1989, traveling behind the “Iron Curtain” to Hungary and Yugoslavia. While in Budapest, they studied at the Kodály Institute with Professor Peter Erdei. Over the next ten years, the choir’s cultural understanding and awareness deepened through concerts, worship services, seminars, and exchanges throughout Eastern Europe, Russia, and Siberia. Sharing a gift of hope from America, members of the choir were tremendously enriched by the depth of faith and rich cultural traditions they encountered.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTCharles Ives was a turn-of-the-century maverick composer whose bold and experimental music had tremendous impact on future generations. Greatly influenced by his father, George, and his own love of American folk and church music, Ives used an optimistic and idealistic approach to liberate musical structure, tonality, keys, scales,

and rhythm in his radical compositions.

Gloriæ Dei Cantores celebrates sacred choral music from the earliest Gregorian chants through the most adventurous twenty-first-century works. The choir’s broad range of American experiences include touring throughout the United States from the hills of Appalachia to the Golden Gate bridge, world-premieres with Mark O’Connor, tours with the Boston Pops Orchestra, and studying with Gerre Hancock, Samuel Adler, Richard Miller, and Margaret Hillis. Preserving the traditions of the past, the choir looks expectantly toward the future of American sacred choral music.

Since founding the choir in 1988, Elizabeth Patterson’s dedication to international understanding and cultural integrity, and her artistic elegance have won her critical acclaim in concert halls and churches in 24 countries from England to Siberia. Her interpretive vision, inspired leadership, and commitment to performance authenticity have rendered her one of America’s greatest choral conductors. In addition to directing the choir’s discography of 50 recordings, and developing a repertoire of more than 2,400 works, she has led the choir in a number of world premieres, and is widely recognized for her extensive contribution to the world of Gregorian chant.

Known for his musical sensitivity and creative artistry, Richard K. Pugsley has conducted Gloriæ Dei Cantores in many concert performances, and has produced 24 of the choir’s recordings, receiving noteworthy praise as the conductor of the double-CD Mozart: Rare Choral Works. He has also directed collaborative ventures with Gloriæ Dei Cantores and Vox Cæli Sinfonia orchestra in opera and oratorio, including the New England premiere of the opera The Pilgrim’s Progress by Vaughan Williams and Handel’s Oratorio Saul (in which he sang the lead roles of Pilgrim and Saul, respectively). A graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Richard Pugsley is the resident coach of vocal technique for the choir.

Gloriæ Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) holds a passionate dedication to illuminate truth and beauty through choral artistry, performance authenticity, and compelling spirituality. Sharing its vision of inspiration and hope, the choir has touched the hearts of audiences in 24 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. The choir’s catalog of more than 50 recordings showcases an expansive repertoire, encompassing both masterworks and rarely performed musical treasures from Gregorian chant to the twenty-first century.

Highlights of the choir’s career include three invitational tours of Russia, opening the 900th Anniversary celebration of San Marco Basilica in Venice, live radio and television broadcasts with the BBC, the soundtrack of Lorenzo’s Oil, ten Holiday Tours with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops, a US tour with Philippe Entremont and the Munich Symphony, and world-premiere concerts and recordings with Mark O’Connor. Gloriæ Dei Cantores makes its home on Cape Cod, at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, Massachu-setts, where the choir sings weekly services.

MAKES ITS HOME AT THE CHURCH OF THE TRANSFIGURATION, a contemporary expression of an ancient fourth-century style of architecture designed by William Rawn Associates of Boston, filled with mosaics and frescos, sculpted bronze, stone, and glass. As a visible sign of God’s saving action redeeming humanity, the art program draws on Scripture, Church tradition, and local context from the setting of Cape Cod. The Church stands at the spiritual center of the Community of Jesus, an ecumenical Christian community in the Benedictine monastic tradition, and houses daily prayer and worship services including the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharist, and Choral Evensong. The organ, built by Nelson Barden & Associates of Boston, is a museum-quality restoration and expansion of pipework and components from fifteen organs built by the E. M. Skinner Organ Company in the early 20th century. When completed, the organ will include 150 ranks and 12,000 pipes.
