We believethat our two-part mission of personal enrichment andworkforce development, along with the sheer number of peoplewe serve each year (nearly 2500), make Community Educationat GCC an integral part of this community. We’re confident thatif you take some time to look over this Lifelong Learning Guideand our website (www.gcc.mass.edu/shopcreditfree/) you’ll see that itcan serve as just that—a guide to your own lifelong learning.Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill you’ve alwaysdreamed about (Stone Carving, Watercolor, Blogging), enhanceyour workplace skills (ServSafe Food Protection Manager,Diversity in the Workplace, Fundamentals of Grant Writing) orare looking to get back into the workforce or into a new field(Residential Energy Auditing, The Digital Home Studio, CertifiedFiber Optic Technician), you’ll find scores of possibilities in thesepages. Dr Ken Feder has taught in the Dept of Anthropology atCentral Connecticut State University since 1977.

Archaeological research is like detective work. Instead of attempting toreconstruct the scene of a crime, researchers investigate the scene of alife. How do archeologists apply this forensic approach whenresearching the origins of agriculture, the development of the first cities, the earliest human settlement of the New World, and the identity ofthose who left behind the stone chambers, carved stones, or stonecircles that dot the New England landscape? In this presentation, Feldershares the reasoning employed by archaeologists—and theconvergence of evidence recovered—to answer that very question.

A Swift River Anthology: Voices from the Four Lost TownsWednesday, October 24

Presenters: Dorothy Johnson and Company In the 1930s, to provide water for the city of Boston, the stateflooded the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott, creatingthe Quabbin Reservoir. The project destroyed homes, factories andfarms, schools and places of worship, roads and railroads. Families wereforced to relocate, and the dead were re-buried. After visiting thereburial site at Quabbin Park Cemetery, playwright Dorothy Johnsondecided to give voice to those whose stones cannot speak. In herSwift River Anthology, she creates entirely imagined poetic sketches ofthose buried there: farmers, schoolteachers, soldiers, innkeepers, carpenters, athletes, musicians, mothers and children. In this dramaticreading, experienced actors bring these fictitious characters to life, sharing their losses, joys, and sorrows. The readings are enhanced byhistoric photos of the lost towns, contemporary views of the Quabbin, and a soundtrack of original music by William Jordan.

Dorothy Johnson, whose parents had lived in Enfield, grew up hearingstories of the four lost towns. A New Salem resident, she has written, directed, and produced community musical theater there for twenty-five years.

They hadworked, socialized, attended school and church, and even lived together. However, once at war, acquaintances often encountered one anotheron opposite sides as combatants or as captives. Salisbury will examinethe environmental, economic, and cultural factors that fostered bothcooperation and hostility. He will show how familiarity as well asantagonism shaped events before, during, and after King Philip’s War. Neal Salisbury is Professor Emeritus of History at Smith College. Farm and Food Systems

Farm and Food Systems at Greenfield Community Collegeembodies a whole systems approach to sustainable farming andlocal food advocacy.

Students learn hands-on skills through agricultural courses such asFour Season Farming, Beekeeping, and Organic Gardening.

Additionally, we prepare our students to be critical food systemsthinkers who understand how the global food system operates andthe benefits of a resilient local food economy.

Permaculture or regenerative design is another trademark of Farmand Food Systems, with courses that train students to read thelandscape and create backyard, urban, and homestead designs that contribute to self-sufficiency while restoring ecosystem health.

Through community-engaged service learning projects and internships that go beyond the walls of the classroom, students apply their skills to makereal contributions to the world around them.
