Introduction

A safari park is a wildlife parkland area or zoo-like commercial tourist’s attraction wherevisitors can drive in their own vehicles or ride in vehicles provided by the facility toobserve freely roaming animals. A safari park is larger than a zoo and smaller than gamereserves. Safari park is a declared protected area or In-situ conservation area where theanimals are kept in fairly large area with natural environment and visitors can easily see theanimal whenever they visit by bus, jeep or on foot. The safari park first opened in 1966 andcontinues to play a major role in the world programme of the breeding and conservation ofendangered species.

Dulahazara Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is the first Safari park in Bangladesharound 2,224acres (9km 2) of area at Chakaria Upazila in Cox’s Bazar District.Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is the second Safari Park of around 3,690 acres(14.9km 2) of area at Gazipur. It was established in 1911 and last phase of development isgoing on. The main attractive animals include Lions, Royal Bengal tigers, Crocodiles,

Bears, marine fishes, ducks, peacocks, butterfly, lizard, giraffes, zebras etc.

LocationIt is located at 40km north from Dhaka and 3 km west from Bagher Bazar of Dhaka-Mymensing Highway.

Objectives of Safari Park

1) Conservation of wildlife and plant diversity of Shalbon.2) Development, in-situ and ex-situ conservation of rare and endangered animals of

Bangladesh.3) Development of tourism industry, poverty alleviation and employment

opportunities establishing Eco-tourism very close to the Dhaka city.4) Recreation, education and scientific research opportunities creation.5) Plantation of fruit trees, fodder and mixed garden for wild animals.6) Safe habitat creation and conservation of wild animals such as tigers, leopards,

sambar deer, deer, hog deer and other herbivorous.7) Rrhinoceros, Asian elephants, migratory birds, aquatic birds, lion, black bear,

freshwater crocodiles, salt water crocodiles, fishes, blue cow, hippo etcconservation in natural habitat.

8) Development of rescue center and veterinary hospital to provide assistance toinjured wildlife.

9) Establishment of aviary for extinct, rare endangered species of bird.10) Creation of much awareness throughout the country.

Main attraction of Safari Park

In this park natural vision center, information and educational center, nature historymuseum, park office, rest house, dormitory, wild hospital, crocodile park, fancy dark

garden, crooned freezing aviary ,parrot aviary, Dhones Bird Corner, macaw land, marineaquarium, orchid house, butterfly garden, climate house, vulture corner, hanging bridge,investigation tower, water resort, lion vision point, echo resort, food court, elephant showgallery, bird show gallery, egg world, child park are situated. After getting inside the park,tiger, lion, kangaroo and even dinosaur are seen. But these are not alive. All of theseanimals are sculptures indeed for welcoming the visitors. The tiger and lion safari is veryattractive. Macao birds and grey parrots are very much attractive and beautiful.Another great area of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is Fancy Ducks Garden.

A lake is also here where big black swans, white swans etc are seen.The park contains also the areas of crocodile, vulture, emu, ostrich, python and various

reptiles. It will be enjoyable to see peacock. The two lakes and the other watery zones arefantastic to enjoy for the tourists. There are almost thousands vertebrate animals on 31species in Bangabandhu safari park.

Nature History Museum of Gazipur Safari Park

Specimen and stuffing of about 2000 species are kept here. The authority has built aherbarium of about 300 types of trees. The tourists, the students and the researchers canobtain huge knowledge from this museum.

Area: The whole park is consisting of about 3690 acres (14.9km 2).

Spectacular Places of Safari ParkAccording to approved master plan there are different type of thematic park have beenestablished such as Core Safari Park, Safari Kingdom, Biodiversity Park and ExtensiveAsian Safari Park.

1) Core Safari Park: No tourists can enter the Core Safari without Safari Car buthe can take a look natural movement of animals riding this car. It is about area of1335 acres in which tigers 20 acers, lions 21 acres, 8.50 acres black bear, 8.0 acreAfrican leopard, deer 81.50 acres, 80.0 acres sambab and ladybug, 105.0 acreselephants, hippopotamus 35.0 acres, 220 acres of Maya and hog deer.

2) Safari Kingdom: In safari kingdom tourists can walk on foot and animals are kept insmall barricade. Main objectives to display the sports and quality of animals to the tourists forrecreation, education and for research. It is about 575 acers of area. The main attraction ofSafari kingdom are the following

3) Biodiversity Park: The main objective of establishment of this park is toconserve gene pool of rare, endangered and critically endangered plant species. Onthe other hand different type of plant will be planted to conserve the Shalbon and the

biodiversity. It will be established as a replica of National Botanical Garden andBoldha Garden. The area of Biodiversity Park is 965 acres.

4) Artificial Lake: Many beautiful water sources have been created within SafariPark for wild animals in the area of about 50 hectors. There are 8 wetlands and 2artificial lakes have been made for them. A number of migratory birds come in thislake which gives enjoyment to the tourists.

5) Nature Interpretation Center: This center provides overall idea on of wildanimals and forest of Bangladesh to the tourists through light and sound system.They have also wild animals model, murals and stuffing in their conservation. Thereare about 100 type of model mural of animals and plants in there. An audio visual

presentation for 12 minutes provides pleasure to the tourists here.

The development stage of this park is also going on but a lot of green trees and a number ofanimals are seen here. The lists of observed animals are provided below.

Recommendations

Bangabandhu Safari Park is the largest and second Safari Park of Bangladesh so it should be taken care for the conservation of wildlife and Biodiversity. Following steps arerecommended cordially

More plantations should be implemented to decrease the effect of high temperatureon animals.

The shelter of the animals should be comfortable so that they can easily move. The transportation road especially from Bagher Bazar to Safari Park should be

developed.

Ensure the safety and development of tourist’s rest house close to the area of Park. Water availability for both the animals and tourists should be developed. Not only marine fishes but also our local fishes can be displayed to the foreign or

local tourists.

Conclusion

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park is largest Safari Park of the South Asia so it hasgreat importance to conserve rare and endangered species for our biodiversity. It isenriching our eco-tourism industry, helping in research area for both students and teachers.It is also playing a vital role in recreation of people and government earning revenue fromthis park. So the proper management of this wonderful park can gives us a beautifulenriched biodiversity of all kinds of animals and plants keeping balance in our environment.
