CAR SHOW John Tully
This month we had a fun meeting at Win Chevrolet followed by pizza, beer and one salad (Jennifer’s) at Shakey’s Pizza.
On February 3, we will have the annual Awards Luncheon at the Admiral RistyRestaurant in Rancho Palos Verdes.
On Sunday, February 11 we will have the annual Sweetheart Rallye led by David Tavares and Jennifer Walton. Meet at 11:30-11:45. Rallye starts at noon.
Pat for David Tavares
Our “All GM Beach Classic” is April 28, 2018 at Ruby’s Dinner in Redondo Beach.
The Car Show planning committee will meet this month Feb. 6, 7 PM at the Tully’s, 21 Roanwood Dr., Rolling Hills Ests. All Vette Set members who wish to contribute to the planning are welcome.
Car Show sponsors and donations are beginning to arrive. We have potentially 8 major sponsors and 2 tee shirt sponsors so far. A major sponsor contributes $500 or equivalent product and a tee shirt sponsor contributes $250 or equivalent product.
Our committee has been calling many of the probable/potential sponsors (the potential sponsor list is over 400). And we are seeing a lot of support with this personal contact.
If any TVS members would like to help with this please give me a call. It’s really easy and can be quite rewarding as most companies like to support charity events and all are most cordial to requesters.
Our Raffle is one of the most enjoyed portions of our Car Show. To make it the best we encourage all Vette Set members to donate a raffle prize to the Car Show. The easiest way to do this is to contact an owner/manager of a business you frequent and ask if they would donate a gift card, dinner coupon, item from their store, etc. Most businesses appreciate the advertisement, good will, and positive endorsement of a customer. Naturally we appreciate individual club member donations as well. Please bring donations to our next General Meeting, March 1, 2018.
We also have trophy sponsorships available. They are $25 each and will have the sponsor’s name on the trophy. Please let me know if you, your business, or a business you frequent would like to sponsor.
If you would like our Sponsor Solicitation Letter to help you approach anyone just let me know and I will forward it to you. All the Sponsor levels and Car Show details are in the letter.
John Kern has asked Malcolm, who brought the classic motorcycles to our show last year, if he would bring some for this year’s Show. He said he would if someone could loan him a transport trailer for the day. Please let John Kern know if you have anything that might work.

In the No. 4 Corvette, full-season teammates Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will drive with Marcel Fassler in hopes of replicating their 2016 Daytona class victory and Driver championships for Gavin and Milner.

RACE REPORTSantiago Chavez
The following is from David Malsher, US Editor, motorsport.com
“The Corvette C7.Rs were simply lacking the pace of the Ford GTs at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, according to Antonio Garcia, a deficit accentuated by the dearth of full-course cautions. The #3 Corvette of Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Mike Rockenfeller, and the #4 of Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fasslerfinished third and fourth in the GT Le Mans category but were respectively two and three laps behind the victorious Ford GTs.Garcia, who with Magnussen is defending GTLM champion, said: “We again didn’t make any mistakes by the drivers, the pit stops were fine – we may have had an unscheduled stop for brakes – other than that, everything worked perfect. We just didn’t have the pace. It was a little bit like what happened a lot last year.“Our guys did a fantastic job. We showed all we had and gave it all. If the Fords were faster than us, we can’t do anything else but congratulate them. We just didn’t have enough to fight them, especially with the limited number of yellow flags.”
Magnussen concurred, stating: “This year’s race was a lot different than previous years because of the lack of safety car periods. Usually, you had to get the car right for the last three or four hours, and then in the last hour you had to nail it. This year, you had to push the whole way.“By the end of it, we didn’t have enough, which is a shame because we ran a good race. We ran out of brakes at the end because we were pushing the whole way through, so that’s something we’ll have to look into. It’s the most physical Rolex 24 I’ve ever done.Their full-time Corvette Racing teammates Gavin and Milner were more content to accentuate the positive, as the 2016 Rolex 24 winners finished only ninth in 2017.”“Yes, we got fourth place today but that’s great points for us,” said Gavin. “Last year we finished ninth here, and it wasn’t a particularly good start for us. But this year we have good fourth place points. It gets us a good start in the championship.”Added Milner: “[There’s] no better way to start the season by getting both cars to the finish with no problems and no issues. That’s really impressive.”
The following is from “The Drive”“Oh how quickly things can change. Just this week, we reported that the new Ford GT
accidentally broke a lap record at Virginia International Raceway, lapping the track in 2 minutes and 38.62 seconds. Then Wednesday, Chevrolet reported its new 2019 Corvette ZR1 has beaten that blisteringly-fast lap time by more than a second.”
