Right Side Engine Compartment Door with Air Inlet Scoop. Note special access door near upper drive
pulley location.
GAW Wings with SuperSpar inserts. The SuperSpar, machined from 7075 aluminum is intended to
eliminate the oilcanning normally associated with BD-5 Wings. The inboard portion is inserted into the
main spar and locks to the landing gear trunions.
Aft portion of cockpit showing custom fiberglass consoles, seat back (made from Al Honeycomb panel)
and shoulder harness attach points. Left side features headset jacks and aux power outlet (cigarette
lighter plug).
Upper access door open showing top of AMW 225-3 engine. Designed to provide access to coolant
system swirl tank filler cap.
Engine compartment with front access door removed. Front end of AMW 225-3 engine can be seen
here.
Forward cockpit under instrument panel showing details of electrical system.
Right Side forward fiberglass console containing switches for electrical system and exterior lighting.
Black wrinkle finish not yet applied.
Left side cockpit showing custom built fiberglass consoles and hartwell canopy latching system.
Left side engine compartment with door removed. Shows AMW 225-5 engine with portions of exhaust
system. Muffler and down pipe removed for clarity. You can also see the lower drive system installation
and the air inlet with built in filter element of the far side compartment door.
Lower engine compartment from left side showing housing for engine cooling radiator. System is
designed to feed forced cooling air on the ground from main gear well area.
Aft engine compartment showing drive system components. The third pulley, added to ensure belt
tension can be seen on the left side of picture. Also note the special inspection opening in the upper
portion of the engine compartment. There are two small NACA scoops in the top of the engine
compartment just forward of the upper pulley to provide down draft cooling air while in-flight.
Underside of fuselage showing radiator cooling scoop and engine compartment fresh air inlet NACA
scoops. The fresh air inlets open into the fuselage stretch area and provide a steady stream of cooling air
independent of the main cooling system.
