FLORIDA 1, FLORIDA STATE 0Tuesday, March 14, 2017 | McKethan Stadium (Gainesville)It was a classic pitcher’s duel between No. 5 Florida and No. 3 Florida State. The Gators came out on top 1-0 courtesy of a check-swing single from Mark Kolozsvary that scored the game’s only run. Four UF freshmen combined to limit the Sem-inoles to four hits in the shutout victory. Florida starter Nate Brown pitched five scoreless innings with three hits allowed. The Gators finally broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh as Kolozsvary singled to shallow left and Jonathan India came around to score the game’s only run. Tyler Dyson entered to close out the game in the ninth and retired the side in order.

FLORIDA 4, FLORIDA STATE 1Tuesday, March 28, 2017 | Baseball Grounds of JacksonvilleFlorida scored four runs in the opening frame and used another strong pitching effort to beat the Noles in the teams’ second meeting of the season. The Gators first three batters of the game reached base and JJ Schwarz gave UF a 1-0 lead with a RBI single. With two outs, Mike Rivera made it 4-0 with a home run to left field. MILESTONE FOR O’SULLIVANHead coach Kevin O’Sullivan picked up his 400th career win on 2/24 against Miami. He became the quickest Gator baseball coach to reach that plateau, taking just 590 games to accomplish the feat. O’Sullivan ranks third on the school’s coaching victories list and has taken the Orange and Blue to five of its 10 CWS appearances (2010-12, 2015-16).

1. Dave Fuller (1948-75) 557-354-6 (.611)2. Joe Arnold (1984-94) 434-244-2 (.640)3. KEVIN O’SULLIVAN (2008-) 417-200 (.676)

STARTING STRONGFor the Gators to win, their starting pitching has to do its job. Through 31 games, they hold a 2.31 ERA in 187.0 innings with 48 earned runs allowed. They’ve also racked up 172 strikeouts. The pitching staff has combined for 14 quality starts (6+ IP, 3 or less ER).

When the starting pitcher allowes two or less earned runs, the Gators are 18-7 (.720) on the year. Florida is 9-3 in games in which its starter lasts through six innings.

VETERANS BOUNCE BACKJunior JJ SCHWARZ endured nearly a month-long slump to start the season, returning from the road trip to Auburn with a .205 batting average. Since then, he has found his stroke -- hitting .343 (12-for-35) over his last nine games with a homer and 10 RBI. He now leads the Gators offense with 21 RBI on the season. He’s also had just six strikeouts in that span after having 22 strikeouts in his first 21 games.

Classmate MIKE RIVERA also struggled to start the year, with his average dipping to .185 after the Seton Hall series despite hitting the ball hard. In his last 11 games, Rivera has found the open grass and has a .385 average (15-for-39) with five extra base hits (3 doubles, 2 homers) and 10 RBI. He’s raised his season average to .265.

#FEELTHEBYRNESophomore MICHAEL BYRNE has been a bright spot in the bullpen this season. After making three starts early in the year with good success (2.40 ERA, 15.0 IP), he moved to the bullpen where he has become even more valuable. In 13 relief ap-pearances, Byrne has a 2.35 ERA in 23.0 innings. He has a team high five saves to go along with 45 strikeouts and just seven walks. Byrne has allowed just two of 16 inherited runners to score on the season.

CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKAlex Faedo picked up his 24th career victory with 7.2 innings in a 4-3 win at No. 23 Missouri. His career win percentage of .828 (24-5 record) ranks first in school history among pitchers who have recorded at least 20 decisions. Faedo is now tied for eighth in school history with 24 wins in his career. The record for wins in a career is held by Marc Valdes, who totaled 31 wins from 1991-93.

CLOSE GAMESFlorida has already played 18 one-run games with an 11-7 record this year. The Gators have played six straight one-run games with a 4-2 record in that span. Last year, UF had just 17 one-run games all season (68 total games) with a 10-7 record in those contests. See Chart ->
