Silly Bands Banned @ GGAlthough silly bands are immensely popular with children, my grandchildren included, they have become a nuisance inthe classrooms and on the playground. I have been told by staff members that our students are:

playing with them in the classroom trading them shooting them across the room crying about them if they are taken, lost, or someone has a change of heart about the trade.

In short, silly bands are interfering with teacher instruction and student learning. On Tuesday, I made an announcement telling studentsto wear or bring them to school. I have asked our teachers to reinforce that message in the classroom and in their information to parentWere asking your help to remind your children to leave their silly bands at home. We know the students really enjoy them and we dontwant to be put in the position of having to confiscate them, but we will need to do so if we see them at school. Our primary job is to prova safe and excellent learning environment. Its important to have it as distraction free as is possible for your children. Please help us witthat effort. Thank you.

Child Safety Information UpdateLast week there was an incident near a Saratoga school involving a suspicious person. Deputy Peter Robinson, our School ResourceOfficer, e-mailed Cupertino principals with the following information. I am printing the information from his e-mail as well as adding someexcellent tips for keeping your children safe.

From Deputy Peter Robinson, our School Resource Officer:I have received a great number of questions and e-mails from school staff and concerned parents about a suspicious man at SaratogaElementary last Thursday afternoon. Last Thursday at approximately 4 p.m., a suspicious man was spotted by school staff as he was tryto interact with children. The children never spoke to the man and never had any physical contact with him. Our deputies took a report are now in the process of following up on the investigation. None of our schools (Cupertino) are being targeted and aside from the usualevel of protection we show for our children, there is no need for concern. However, having said all that, this seems like a good time toremind the kids about the importance of not talking to strangers. For most of the schools in Cupertino, we have come by and given or aabout to give a Stranger Danger presentation.**Our school resource officers have made their Stranger Danger presentation at Garden Gate at the beginning of September.

Four Excellent Tips to Help Ensure Your Childrens Safety: Please Review With Them1.Travel with a friend, or better yet, a group of friends when riding bikes or walking to or from school or other destinations.2. NEVER accept a ride from anyone unless they have checked with a parent or trusted adult directly. If anyone follows them in a vehiclethey should turn around, go in the other direction, and run to a trusted adult who may help them.3. Move away from a car that pulls up beside them if they do not know the driver.

    4. If a stranger tells your child that there is an emergency or that a family member is hurt or that a pet has been in an accident, teach theto check with their parent or trusted adult. Tell them not to take the strangers word for it.

Please Note: No Bulletin Next Week (3 Day School Week)Next week is a three-day school week because of our Veterans Day Observance on November 11 and the factthat Friday, November 12 is a non-school day.

What is the Meaning of Veterans Day?On November 11, we commemorate Veterans Day. Originally called Armistice Day, it is a day to honor war andmilitary veterans. It originally commemorated the German signing of an armistice to end World War 1. Despitethe United State's short involvement in the war, over 116,000 soldiers were killed. On October 4, 1918, KaiserWilhelm II appealed to President Woodrow Wilson for an armistice to end the war. As part of the truce, Wilson also wanted Wilhelabdicate his throne and replace the German government with a democracy. Over the next few days, the allies sided with Wilson resultia truce. On November 9, 1918, Wilhelm fled Germany and on November 11, the armistice was signed by the allies and the new Ger

government. Tombs of unknown soldiers were erected by France, Britain, and the United States to recognize the service and bravery osoldiers. In France, the grave is beneath the Arc de Triomphe, in Britain, it is in Westminster Abbey, and, in the United States, the tombArlington cemetery. After World War II, a movement began to change the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day. It was signedlaw by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 1, 1954. Veterans Day is always observed on November 11.
