WEST WINDSOR - A partnership between LiteracyVolunteers of Salem and Cumberland Counties andPathStone presented opportunities to help ESL learners inSalem County learn English and become established in thecommunity. It also presented challenges. Literacy Volunteers of Salem and CumberlandCounties, a program of Gateway Community ActionPartnership, quickly realized that there would be far morelearners than tutors with this sudden influx of referralsfrom PathStone. Also, assisting Spanish-speaking learners was usuallynot as great an obstacle since Gateway has many staffmembers who speak Spanish. But further complicating thematter with this new partnership with PathStone was thatmost of the new learners were French-Creole speakers. Some creative thinking by Laura Weber, Gateway'sliteracy program coordinator, and our partners atPathStone led to a solution that has become popular withour learners. Gateway and PathStone started aconversational group Beginning English class at Gateway'sSalem Family Success Center to get the learners startedon English while awaiting a match with a tutor.Started in August 2012, it was supposed to last fourweeks. It remains in place and will continue due to theappeal and effectiveness of the class. It is because of this program that Literacy Volunteersof Salem and Cumberland Counties received the Alice M.Leppert Award for Outstanding Affiliate Achievement atLiteracy Volunteers of NJ annual Literacy for LifeConference on April 20 at the Conference Center atMercer. Literacy Volunteers of Salem and CumberlandCounties received the "affiliate of the year" award among21 New Jersey affiliates for the second time in threeyears. "The mission of Gateway Community ActionPartnership is to provide services that improve the qualityof life and promote self-sufficiency, and our literacyprogram advances that mission in Salem and Cumberlandcounties," said Albert B. Kelly, Gateway's President andCEO. "I am so proud that we are the Literacy Volunteersof NJ's affiliate of the year once again, and I congratulatethe staff and our volunteer tutors for this award." Literacy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland Countiesand PathStone shared teaching duties for the BeginningEnglish class and recruitment of volunteers. Ten tutorshave been trained to lead the classes. Literacy Volunteersof Salem and Cumberland Counties hopes to expand theprogram to Cumberland County by forming partnershipswith other existing ESL programs. Weber, in accepting the award from LVNJ, said

receiving the award was especially meaningful consideringthe great work performed by the other LVNJ affiliates. "I would like to acknowledge our fellow affiliates for allthe good work that you do," Weber said. "Winning thisaward is kind of like getting the Best Actress nod whenyou are up against Meryl Streep. You have been suchgreat role models for this growing affiliate and youcontinuously give us something to aspire to." Weber also thanked Gateway's literacy programpartners and the volunteer tutors who are making adifference in the community by selflessly giving their time. Two tutors, Yvonne Crouch and Judy Hunt, attended theconference along with Mike Cudemo, Gateway's VicePresident of Planning and Ed Hilt, a Program Planner atGateway. Cudemo, Hilt and Weber serve on the program'sliteracy advisory board. Weber gave a special thank you to Crouch "who hasbeen pivotal in keeping the English program running."Weber also expressed her appreciation to Mike Cudemo, who "has been a real champion" for the program and hasplayed a huge role in its success. Jessica Tomkins, LVNJ's Executive Director, presentedthe award. "We give this award because of this project and whatLiteracy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland Countieshas accomplished over the past few years," Tomkins said."It really exemplifies what is best about literacyvolunteers. Openness, partnerships, finding creativesolutions, responding to the needs of your community, and using all the resources of your community to serveyour learners. I'm very proud to present this 2013 Alice M.Leppert Award for Outstanding Affiliate Achievement toLiteracy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland Counties." Literacy Volunteers of Salem and Cumberland Countiesheld four tutor training sessions in Salem and Cumberlandcounties in 2012 and added 25 new tutors to its ranks ofmore than 60 active volunteers. The program alsoprovided services to more than 60 new learners in ESLand basic literacy. For more information on Literacy Volunteers of Salemand Cumberland Counties, contact Weber at 856-497-6645.
