London; Longmans, Green, and Co.; 1889. ***Ferguson 7361. Published posthumously, this copy is poignantly inscribed to Sir William Robinson, In Memoriam, and signed by Lord Brassey. Lady Brassey died on this voyage and was buried at sea on 14th September 1887. This work was compiled from her journals by M. A. Broome and covers her journey from India to Ceylon, Labuan, Brunei, Borneo and the Celebes, then to Australia (which the “Sunbeam” circumnavigated). Following Lady Brassey’s death off the north-west coast of Australia, the “Sunbeam” returned to Portsmouth via Cape Town. The full-page plates and the headings to the chapters are printed in “monotone” by E. Nister of Nuremberg and the wood engravings were executed by Edward Whymper J. D. Cooper and G. All these pamphlets are scarce or very scarce, this collected issue even more so. The introduction [to this collected issue] notes: “The first lecture in this volume inaugurated the winter series, 1869, and was published in pamphlet form, but met with so limited a sale, that it was considered inexpedient to continue the experiment. ... Considerable disappointment and dissatisfaction having been expressed, at the the non-publication of the whole of the first series, the Committee determined to make arrangements for publishing each Lecture of the winter series, 1870.” The Early Closing Association was an organisation of retail workers formed in Victoria in the 1850s which had counterparts in the U.K. in the 1840s and similar organisations were founded in South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales in later years. With the object of securing improved working hours and earlier shop closing times, the organisation relied on Public Meetings and ‘moral persuasion’ rather than strike action. The lectures by M’Coy and Bromby are of particular interest for the ongoing debates between religion and evolution. #65569 A$500.00

A second edition, very similar, was issued later in the same year and a third in 1873, with fourth and fifth editions in 1877 and 1882 respectively. An English translation was published in 1874. These later editions are all more common than this first edition which is quite elusive. The book is an account of the wreck of the schooner Grafton (Captain Musgrave), by one of the survivors. Raynal was Mate and this account is taken from his diary. He also recounts his early life including eleven years spent on the Australian goldfields. The Appendix includes a short account of the loss of the Invercauld in the Auckland Isles by Captain Dalgarno, and a relation of the wreck of the General Grant. #36106 A$450.00
