WVACS to Host Fall VAR Meeting

September 22-24 2000

The West Virginia Association for Cave Studies (WV ACS) will host the Fall V AR meeting at the Ray Ratliff Farm just past the WVACS Field Station on Butler Mountain Road Renick Greenbrier County WV The site is in the heart of premier cave country Greenbrier County has more caves on the Long Cave List than any other county 9 caves over 10 miles 7-

of which will be available to V AR - over 160 miles of passage We believe there are at least 10 caves within one mile of the V AR site 100 caves within 10 miles and 1000 caves within 20 miles In addition we have several State Parks and Cranberry Glade National Botanical Area all within an easy drive

FOOD amp DRINK A special lasagna dinner (including vegetarian) Saturday night catered by the folks that provide meals for the Anthony Youth Camp We will of course serve beer and soft drinks Front Royal Grotto will again provide a super breakfast Sunday morning

EVENING ACTIVITIES We will have all the usual activities starting at noon on Friday A slide projector and screen will be available so bring all your slides Ive been told we will have music So bring your own ear

plugs In order to help support various cave related causes we will no doubt have several other money making fund-raiser schemes to dupe you out of whatever cash the vendors dont get Bat-Flights-ARE-USn

PERSONAL HYGIENE We will have Porta-Potties available for registrants but due to the likelihood of low water conditions showers may not be available at the field station To be fair it was decided that showers will either be available at the WVACS for everyone or depending on the water supply not available to anyone There will not be an auction for shower tickets Hey the Greenbrier River is only a couple of miles away If you think you REALL Y need to freshen up do a Norman to Bone through-trip and jump in the river when you get out Take swim in Trailside Cave or walk over to Buckeye Cave We may be able to locate a water tank like they had at Spring V AR for mud removal or mud wrestling

CA VE TRIPS There will be a number of led trips on Saturday as well as self guided trips to the many caves in the area The guided trips are still being formed but George Dasher will lead a trip in Organ Cave and Fred Grady will lead one to Haines Cave Additional trips will be posted at registration

GEOLOGY TOUR George Dasher will lead a geology tour on

A video cpncluding the program captured footage of the survey teams as they made the connection that established the new record depth The Omega explorers decided to share the discovery with the NSS caving community despite some extremely sensitive landshyowner relations I think we all know of situations where informashytion on new exciting discoveries has been kept secret sometimes for many years Mike and Ben wanted to share the news with the NSS caving community but have chosen to provide no location and have asked that no specific inquirshyies be made at this time I hope everyone wil1 understand and respect their wishes This will insure their approach will be successful and perhaps help set a trend for sharing future discovershyies

We had a full house for the session and the presentations brought much loud applause and even one standing ovation I heard complishyments from people saying that this was the best exploration session theyd ever been to at an NSS Convention Thanks again to all the speakers for making this happen

Tucker County West Virginia

In recent conversations at Convenshytion and during the NSS Post Camp held in Tucker County it appears that there is much interest in actively pursuing the completion of the WV ASS publication on Tucker County Caves

One of the first things that really needs done is the compilation of the known caves in the county as to the status Primarily what I am looking for right now is for those that have a list of the known caves in the county to email that list to me (preferably in Microsoft Excel) but anything will do That way I can check that list with the list I have of approximately 250 known caves and adddelete accordingly This way we can hopefully compose a master list of the known caves which currently does not exist due to the fact that many different groups are currently working within the county but there is not much interaction

I know that some of Mountain State Grotto has been working the southwest part of the county WVUSG and myself have been working the area around Henshydricks some from Pittsburgh have been looking at Otter Creek and Canaan Valley and there may be other groups actively working

Once I get this data I will then compile it together and send it back to those that have submitted data and others that have requested it for additions and subtractions

In particular I would like as much of the following as possible

Cave Name Elevation 75 minute quad UTM coordinates LATLON coordinates has the cave been mapped if so when and by whom has the information been published and if so where and when landshyowner if known and last but not least if the cave info is open for publicationdistribution and if not why If you are the one that has actively worked a particular cave I would also appreciate other information such as a copy of the map and description

So if you have any uf this inforshymation could you please email me Also please email me if you would like to be on the distribution list for information on the TCSS

Once this information is gathered we can then start working on setting up monthly fieldcamps in Tucker County based at one of the three camps located along the Dry Fork River from Hendricks to Jenningston

At the spring VAR meeting a motion was passed to obtain a domain name for the Virginia Region website The main reason for this was that up until now the website was hosted by me at idsonlinecom Since I am not renewing my contract with ids the website had to find a new home Since the address had to change anyway this was a good time to et a domain name for the regIon website so if the website ever has to move again it will be able to move without changing the urI In other words as long as we pay the $35 for the domain name a year the address will always be wwwvaregionorg Thanks to Kelly Shaw for allowing us to host the website on his server There will be no fee for hosting the V AR website

The V AR Landowner Recognition Award

Please check the list before you go to a cave you are not familiar with Its a lot easier to avoid restricted caves than to explain why you are in them if an irate landowner or policeman catches you

Please let me know if you have any additions or corrections to the list Im also interested in first-hand verifications that the listed inforshymation is correct Many of the entries in the list are quite old and I - - would like folks who are familiar with the caves to verify their current status My address phone number and e-mail are in the front of the list

The Virginia Region has five sources of income -- the fall and spring meetings independent dues patch sales and interest on checkshying We did not receive any contributions from grottos over the course of this year Besides grants the VAR annually spends money on Landowner A wards and Conservation projects These two important projects are mainly funded by income from the meetings If your grotto has excess funds at the close vf this year please consider contributions to The Virginia Region You will be recognized at the next meeting
