Emergent Architecture – New Game, New Rules Introduction from the Conference Chairs
The practice of enterprise architecture that has steadily evolved over the past 20 years isabout to be turned on its head. Instead of controlling chaos, it’s time to embrace it. Nolonger will enterprise architects be able to dictate highly prescriptive standards to anunwilling group of stakeholders. The reins of decision-making power are now largely inthe hands of the EA stakeholders.
Given their freedom, business units, employees, customers, partners and suppliers willimplement a diverse set of solutions driving value from information in new ways, unanticipated by the central planners in EA. Enterprise architects must not only acceptthe inversion of control, your role will be to stimulate diversity by empowering yourstakeholders.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but the role of enterprise architects in the future will be todefine a minimal set of rigidly enforced standards and maximize the freedom of choice forthe implementers of the EA. Conventional thinking would suggest that too much freedomwill result in inefficiencies – that the masses must be controlled. Conventional thinkingis wrong. Welcome to the new game.
At this summit, we will be exploring the boundaries of enterprise architecture and relateddisciplines. We will help you to understand the leading practices to define interfacestandards that enable emergent behaviour and stimulates innovation – in the future wewill be architecting the lines and not the boxes. We will also explore the leading edge ofcloud computing, service oriented architecture, project and portfolio management andbusiness process management – those issues that are most critical to enterprisearchitects. We will also showcase some of the leading practitioners of enterprisearchitecture from a broad range of industries and geographies.
We are convinced that this EA Summit will not only update you on the latesttrends in EA, but challenge you to change some of your most basic premisesand operating models.

The Tracks for 2008Firing on All Cylinders As the practice of enterprise architecturecontinues to grow and evolve, the focus hasshifted from technology to information andbusiness. The key to enterprise architecturesuccess is often not the creation of thearchitecture itself, rather it is the supportingactivities that are often most critical. Defining apragmatic and actionable architecture that isrelevant in today’s constrained economy ischallenging for many enterprise architectureprograms. This track will provide the guidanceand insight necessary to get the EA programon firm footing.
Casting a Broad Net Enterprise architecture is not an island. To besuccessful, architects must interact with avariety of related management disciplinessuch as solution development, businessprocess management and portfoliomanagement. It is important to define theboundaries and build the bridges between EAand other disciplines to reduce the ‘whitespace’ and overlaps. This track will discusssome of the key relationships for EA, definethese boundaries and describe the state ofthe art in these areas.
Taking IT and EA to the Next Level EA has already changed. New styles, newapproaches, new content in the faces of newdemands, new technologies and even newreporting relationships. The key to managingchange is EA. A Chinese proverb states, “Ifyou do not change direction, you may end upwhere you are heading”. Establishing EA andconnecting to other complimentarymanagement disciplines is baseline for leadingedge practitioners today. This track willexplore the concepts, trends and thoughtprovoking considerations for mature enterprisearchitects as they take EA, and IT, to the nextlevel.

Track 1 Sessions
Defining the Business Architecture
Enterprise architecture is about much more thantechnology; it is about the process of enabling anorganization (including information, technology, business and solution) to change and evolve toward abusiness vision and strategy. As such, enterprisebusiness architecture (EBA) is a critical, but often notclearly defined or understood, part of an overall EAeffort. This session defines EBA and the majordimensions and influencing factors (internal andexternal).
Philip Allega
Creating EA Roadmaps & Migration Plans
Visualizing the aggregation of multiple plans at anenterprise level helps companies understand, forexample, that the launch of a new critical product isaligned with other operational plans of the company, including business processes, information andtechnology. The ability to manage and understand theimpact of complex, interrelated future-state plans andscenarios is crucial for all enterprise architects thatmust project the future state of the enterprise overtime.
Richard Buchanan
Communicating the Value of EA
Communication is a critical issue for EA teams, andone that is neglected surprisingly often. In fact,Gartner’s analysis indicates that effectivecommunication has the most significant impact on EAprogram success of all EA activities. Gartner estimatesthat up to 30% of an EA team's effort should be spenton communication. Formal communication planning isa requisite skill for enterprise architects.
Brian Burke
Integrating EA and Business Strategy
The company’s three biggest brains cannot constructEA without business context. EA without businesscontext is a set of indefensible standards, models, patterns or blueprints. EA and business strategytogether improves and strengthens support for thecontent of EA. This session will help you understandhow to make this happen, even if you don’t think youhave a business strategy today.
Philip Allega
EA Governance
EA and governance efforts should be intertwined andcomplimentary. IT managers should use the artifacts ofEA (such as business context, principles and models)to develop a business-driven IT governance strategy.Equally, the EA team should leverage the ITgovernance model when defining the EA organizationand defining working groups with business leaders. This session illustrates the need for integration andcollaboration between these two processes.
Richard Buchanan
Measuring the Business Value of EA
Many enterprise architecture teams struggle to findmetrics that demonstrate the value that EA is deliveringto the business, and resort to inwardly focused metricsmeant to increase the scope of EA assurance andgovernance processes. This session explores the shiftin EA measurement programs from inward metrics toperformance management in order to relate the valueof EA to the business value areas defined in thebusiness strategy.
Anne Lapkin
Projects and Programs: The Future Must BeSmaller, Faster and Easier
Enterprises execute change through project-basedactivities under the PPM (program and portfoliomanagement) umbrella. The methodologies, roles andbest practices for these activities have been writtenabout, standardized, certified, promoted, anddocumented. Yet “success” (the ability to pick the rightprojects, execute and deliver to expectations) is oftenstill elusive for today’s IT organizations. In thispresentation we discuss how to find the real criticalsuccess factors – the ones no one taught you. Inaddition, we take a look into the future and findincreasing evidence that even less of the standardproject methodology foundation we depend on todaywill serve us effectively in the future. We’ll discuss whatthe future holds and how projects and programs willneed to change.

Track 2 Sessions
If You Had an Application Strategy, WhatWould It Look Like?
The typical “de facto” application strategy approachworks in a slow-changing environment, but cannotsupport today’s radical and rapid changes intechnology and business. Organizations need to builda coherent, modern, vision-focused strategy, but fewknow where to start and how to craft the rightobjectives, structure and content. This session willpresent a framework for constructing a modernapplication strategy, and will provide practical adviceon how to create and evolve one.
Andy Kyte
What’s Next: Context-Delivery Architecture
Gartner's analysis of four key areas of communicationsare indicating that a transformational wave of change isimminent and combined with context awarecomputing will lead to the creation of context-enrichedservices. New opportunities and risks triggered by thisblending of communications and applications willrequire enterprise architects to adopt new viewpoint, known as Context Driven Architecture (CoDA). In thissession, Gartner looks at how CoDA will impact theindustry in 2012.
Anne Lapkin
Dynamic BPM: Services and Processes GetReal Time Events
The future of business is to be proactive, efficient, andreactive to deliver on the promise of agility. Businessprocesses are not always agile. With SOA, events willallow business processes to be more ad-hoc anddynamic. This presentation discusses the need fordynamic BPM where rules, processes and eventscome together.
Daryl Plummer
Mastering The Hype Cycle
The Hype Cycle is one of Gartner's most famous andimportant models. This new work expands andexplains it while raising its usage to a new strategiclevel – into effective business change through timelytechnology innovation adoption. Based upon theforthcoming book of the same title, this session willexplain how to navigate the Hype Cycle for successand avoid its damaging traps.
Mark Raskino
SOA and EA: Lessons Learned From theTrenches
Many organizations have started with service orientedarchitecture initiatives but many have simply ‘let ithappen’ rather than planning the change. As a result, these organizations are not seeing the benefits theyexpected from their investment in SOA. This sessionwill take a look at some of the common missteps thatorganizations make in moving towards SOA and howto avoid those mistakes.
Nick Gall
Cloud Computing: How Getting “Served” willAlter Your Architectural Plans
The Cloud Computing phenomenon is gaining steamand will be one of the most talked about subjects of2008. Vendors are rapidly delivering plans for cloudplatforms and services through industrialized IT.However, myths about cloud computing such as IT ontap, software-only clouds, and the end of softwaremust be balanced with the reality that will exist. Thispresentation examines Gartner’s definition of the cloud, how it will evolve, and what myths will morph intosuccessful cloud initiative.
Daryl Plummer
Radical IT Cost Cutting Driving BusinessTransformation
Whether good economic times or bad, ITorganizations must manage their cost profile. Leadingorganizations have discovered that radical cost cuttingideas in IT (reducing total cost to the business, depopulation, etc.) can lead to better businessinnovation. For enterprise architects, learning how tothink differently about how IT can be applied to thebusiness can free your mind to consider new ways todo business and IT differently.

EA Tools: Understanding the Market andSelecting a Tool
A fool with a tool is still a fool. EA tools serve as theprimary repository to store, structure and relate a widevariety of information. They also support the analysisand presentation of this information to meetstakeholder needs. In this volatile and geographicallydispersed market, the maturation of tool capabilitiesmeans that new and senior architects must reassesswhich tools are the best fit.
Robert Handler
Pulling It All Together: Defining the SolutionArchitecture
The solution architecture integrates the businessprocesses, information and technology to actuallydeliver something useful. However many enterprisearchitects struggle with the concepts and relationshipsin a solution architecture. Understanding the solutionarchitecture is the key to delivering an integratedarchitecture that meets business needs. This sessionwill discuss solutions and services and how they fit intothe enterprise architecture models.
Nick Gall
Why Leaders Place IT Strategy BeforeBusiness Strategy
How far out should your strategy look? 3 years? 5?How about – “as long as the persistence of yourdecisions”? Business and IT managers today are livingwith the consequences of decisions taken 20 yearsago. Persistent success means raising the horizon –developing a twenty year life-cycle plan for all theenterprise assets.
Andy Kyte
Minding Your Own Business: Architecting the Information Assets
Information architecture is widely talked about, deeplymisunderstood and seldom practiced. Information isthe most valuable asset in your care, and yet gets littleattention from enterprise architects. The cause is thatinformation architecture is poorly understood andinformation architecture practices vary greatly. Thissession will demystify information architecture in all itsvarious forms, and help you to focus on takingpragmatic steps to effectively manage the informationasset.
Betsy Burton
Managing the IT Investment Portfolio
Unlocking the business value of IT and EA requires anunderstanding of the IT investment portfolio: itscreation, polices, principles, organizational roles andother governance aspects. Today’s demandingregulatory and economic climate heightens the need tounderstand how this critical discipline supports andenables the implementation of EA’s future state. Thissession will explain the process of achieving arationalized and business-aligned portfolio to supportthe needs of business.
Robert Handler
The Best Enterprise Architects Don’t WorkToo Hard
Gartner’s empirical research indicates that enterprisearchitects are generally bad golfers, consistently losingto the Sales people at company golf tournaments. Theroot cause is that enterprise architects are simplyworking too hard. Join this session to explore tips andtechniques to accelerate EA development. Learn howto leverage knowledge and talent from across theorganization and beyond to orchestrate thedevelopment of EA.
Brian Burke
Alt+Shift+N: Start a New Game
Change is the game. The only source of sustainablecompetitive advantage is organizational agility – buthow can you teach a dinosaur new tricks? Managinginnovation and disruptive technologies is an art andscience that few organizations master. Those that doare rarely blindsided by change, and are often in theforefront of industry shifts. In this session we willdiscuss the techniques that the most agileorganizations use to identify, select and implementinnovation strategies.
