    test ing . The 50mm com pressor bypass valve is a vi tal component of any turbocharg ed blow-through indu ct ion system. This custom TiAl

    The Garre t t Per fo rm ance In te rc oo le rs(also known as Charge Air Coolers) work together with th e turbocharger as a part of the total

    induct ion system. When air is comp ressed in th e turbocharger i t gain s a great deal of heat. The heated air has lower oxygen density

    and t herefore is not able to produce as mu ch energy when fed int o the cyl inders. The job of the intercooler is to remove heat added by

    compression in the turbocharg er and in turn p romote more thorough comb ust ion yielding m ore power, less emiss ions, and great ly

    reducing detonat ion.

    3 . Ef f i c ie n cy Con to u rs The eff i c iency contours depict the

    regional ef f i c iency of the compressor set. This ef f ic iency is

    simply the percentage of turbo shaft power that converts to

    actu al air comp ression. When sizing a turbo, i t is importan t

    to main t a in the proposed lug l ine w i th a h igh e f f ic iency

    range on the map.

    4 . Su r g e Li n e The surge region, located on the lef t - hand side

    of the compressor map, is an area of f low instabi l i ty typical ly

    caused by comp ressor inducer stal l . The turbo should be sized

    so that the engine does not operate in the surge rang e.When tu rbochargers operate in surge for long per iods of t im e,

    bear ing f ai lures m ay occur.

    5 . Ch o k e Li n e The choke l ine is on the r ight hand side of

    the compressor ma p and represents the f low l imit . When a

    turbocharg er is run deep into choke, turbo speeds wi l l increase

    dramatical ly whi le compressor ef f ic iency wi l l p lunge (very high

    compressor out let temps), and turbo durabi l i ty wi l l be

    compromised.

    "On-Engine Durabil i ty A 1,000-hour general turbocharg er

    durabi l i ty test that is run on-engine in one of Garrett s engi-

    neer ing laborator ies. Some engines die before our turbos do!

    "Gas Stand Cycl ic Durabil i ty (aka The Non- Sissy Test)

    A 500 hour general turbocharger durabi l i ty test . This is basi-cal ly a beat the crap out of the turbo test . Survive this

    one and you ve got one tough turbo!

    "Compressor & Turbine Housing Containment - A compressor/

    turbi ne wheel is weakened to hub burst at a specif ic speed.

    No port ion of t he wheel is al lowed to penetrate a conta inment

    shroud surrounding t he turbocharger. A test to ensure safety.

    "Shaf t Mot ion - The maximum tolerances of the bear ing system

    are tested for rotordynamic stabi l i ty beyond the maximum

    turbocharger operat in g speed. This means no bear ing problems

    and a long t urbo l i fe .

    "Thrust Bearing Capacity - A test that stresses the thrust

    bear ing at extreme condit ions. This test m akes sure your

    Garrett turbocharger can tolerate the load you put i t through.

    "Compressor & Turbine Seal - Mult ip le turbochargers are run

    on-engine und er condit ions designed to cause seal leakage.

    No signif icant leakage is al lowed dur ing these tests.

    "Heat Soakback - A turbocharger instrumented with thermocou-ples is taken beyond maximum operat ing temperature and shut

    down hard ! Repeat the test four more t imes and make sure

    maximum temperatures s tay w i th in our s t r ic t l im i ts to avo id o i l

    coking or bui ld up inside the center housing. This is part icu-

    lar ly cr i t ical for high temperature gasol ine appl icat ions.

    Appendix A

    Turbo Terms

    A/ R- A/R descr ibes a geometr ic property of al l comp ressor and

    turbi ne housings . Increasing compressor A/R opt im izes the

    performance for low boost appl icat ions. Changing tu rbine A/R

    has m any effects. By going to a larger turbine A/R, the turbo

    comes up on boost at a hi gher engine speed, the f low capa city

    of the turbine is increased and less f low is wastegated, there is

    less engine backpressure, and engine volumetr ic ef f i c iency is

    increased result ing in m ore overal l p ower.

    CHRA- center housing rotat ing assembly The CHRA includ es

    a complete turbocharger minus the compressor, turbine

    housing, and actuator.

    Clipped Turbi ne Wheels - When an angle is machined on the

    turbi ne wheel exducer (out let side), the wheel is sai d to be

    cl ipped . Cl ipping cau ses a minor increase in the wheel s f low

    capab i l i t y, however, i t d rama tical ly lowers the tu rbo eff ic iency.

    This reduct i on causes the turbo to come up on boost at a la ter

    engine speed ( increased turbo lag). High performance appl ica-

    t ions should never use a cl ipp ed turbine wheel. Al l Garrett

    GT turbos use m odern uncl ipped t urbine wheels.

    Free-F loa t- A free f loat in g turbocharger has no wastegate

    device. This turbocharger can t control i t s own boost levels.

    For performance appl icat ions, the user must instal l an

    external wastegate.

    GT- The GT desig nat ion refers to Garrett s s ta te-o f - the-ar t

    turbocharg er l ine. Al l GT turbos use modern compressor and

    turbine aerodynamics which represent huge eff ic iency improve-

    m ents over the old T2, T3, T3/ T4, T04 product s. The net result

    On-Center Turbin e Housings- On-center turbine housings refer

    to an outdated style of turbine housing with a centered turbine

    inlet pad. The inlet pad is centered on the turbos axis of rotat ion

    instead of being tan gent ial l y located. Using an on-cent er housing

    w i l l s ign i f icant ly lower the turb ines eff ic iency. This results in

    increased turbo lag , more backpressure, lower engine volumetr ic

    effi ciency, and less overall engin e power. No Garrett OEM s use

    on-center housings.

    Trim - Tr im i s an area rat io used to descr ibe both tu rbine and

    compressor wheels. Tr im is calcula ted using the inducer and

    exducer diam eters. As tr im is increased, the wheel can supp ort

    more air /g as f low. Use these formul as when calcula t ing tr im :

    Wastegate - A wastegated turbocharger includes an integral

    device to l imit turb o boost. This consists of a pneumat ic actuat or

    connected to a valve assembly mounted inside the turbine

    housing. By connect ing the pneumat ic actuat or to boost pressure,

    the turbo is ab le to l imi t i t s maximum boost output . The net

    result is increased durabi l i ty, quicker t ime to boost, and

    ad justab i l i t y o f boost .
