Evangelists do not. Evangelists travel from place to place sharing the gospel and leading people to make a commitment to follow Christ—you could call them "revivalists" or "fishers of men." One such evangelist is Darrel Davis of Garner. Davis was reared in Northeastern North Carolina and attended a Baptist church there with an uncle. Although he made that trip to the altar in his teen years, he did not make a "heart commitment" to God. During high school he suffered from depression and had suicidal thoughts. He was miserable and searching for answers. After high school he attended college, hoping to have a career in architecture. He went to work with an aluminum manufacturer as a draftsman and there met a man who mentored him in the Christian faith. It was during that time that Davis really formed a personal relationship with God and surrendered his life and future. Davis and his wife, Penny, were married in 1996 and jointly made a commitment to go wherever God led them. In 1997 Davis was laid off from his job and made the decision to return to college, pursuing a degree in religion. "God was working in that situation; God is in control," he said. Nondenominational Foundation Ministries was founded in 1999 with the following mission: "To introduce people to Jesus Christ and to equip his followers to do the same." Davis has ministered in nine different countries including El Salvador, Uganda, Columbia and Tanzania. Revivals may be outdated, but Foundation Ministries helps churches plan events for outreach and witness. He has been involved with International Community Evangelism events in 12 different states. Penny Davis, in addition to being a full-time mom to Jeremy and Rebekah, is a music evangelist and works alongside her husband when she can. Local outreach is an important facet of Foundation Ministries, too. Partnered with the "Church in the Woods" or with a group from First Baptist Church of Garner where he attends, Davis reaches out to the homeless and those who may feel alone and out of touch with God. When Darrel is not out of town, he extends an open invitation to services at Moore Square on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. Foundation Ministries equips others to introduce people to Christ through training seminars, events and materials. One facet of training is "FriendFluence," which teaches church members how to expand their boundaries beyond their church friends. Building relationships first may later provide an opportunity later for religious beliefs to be shared effectively.
