Caring for the Oregon

Cleaning the caseUse a cloth dampened with a milddetergent solution, and then wipe itdry. Avoid cleaners that may damagethe plastic components.

Cleaning the screenUse a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Usewater, isopropyl alcohol, or eyeglasslens cleaner. Apply the liquid to thecloth and then gently wipe the screen

with the cloth.

Cleaning the camera lensClean the lens only when necessary.

Use a soft lens cloth. Apply lens wipe the screen with the cloth.

Getting Started

Battery InformationOregon units operate on two AA batteries. Use alkaline, NiMH, orlithium batteries. Use precharged NiMH or lithium batteries for bestresults. Standard alkaline batteriesare not recommended for Oregon 550

units when using the camera feature.To install the batteries:

1. Lift the latch and remove thebattery cover.

3. Replace the battery cover andpush the latch down.

To select the battery type:1. Touch Setup > System > Battery

Type.2. Touch Alkaline, Lithium,

Rechargeable NiMH, orPre-Charged NiMH.

Long-Term Storage

Remove batteries when you do not plan to use the Oregon for severalmonths. Stored data is not lost when batteries are removed.

Acquiring GPS SatelliteSignals current location and navigate a route,you must acquire GPS signals.

1. Go outdoors to an open area,away from tall buildings and trees.

2. Turn on the Oregon. Acquiringsatellite signals can take a fewminutes.

The bars on the Main menuindicate satellite strength. When

the bars are green, the Oregon hasacquired satellite signals.

Locking the ScreenLock the screen to prevent

inadvertent screen touches.

Using the CompassThe Compass page guides you toyour destination by displaying acompass and a bearing pointer.

It also provides navigation data such

as current speed, distance to the next point on the route, and estimated

arrival time.

The electronic compass (Oregon 300,400t, 400c, 400i, 550, and 550t) issimilar to a magnetic compass whenyou are stationary or walking. If you

maintain a higher speed, such astraveling in automobile, the compassuses GPS signals to determine yourdirection. To turn the electroniccompass off, see page 31. Hold the

compass level when navigating toensure maximum accuracy.

NOTE: Holding the compasslevel is not necessary if you areusing an Oregon 550 or 550t.

To open the Compass page: Touch Compass.




Basic Navigation

Calibrating the CompassCalibrate the electronic compass

(Oregon 300, 400t, 400c, 400i, 550,and 550t) outdoors. For all Oregonsexcept the 550 or 550t, hold thedevice level while calibrating. Do buildings, or overhead power lines.

Calibrate the compass after movinglong distances, experiencingtemperature changes greater than

20°F (11°C), or changing the batteries.

To calibrate the electroniccompass:

1. Touch Setup > Heading > PressTo Begin Compass Calibration.ORFrom the Compass page, touchand hold the middle of thecompass.

2. Touch Start and follow the on-screen directions.

“Too Fast,” or “Too Slow” mayappear, notifying you to adjust yourturning speed. If “Calibration Failed”

appears, touch OK , and repeat the process.

Bearing and CoursePointersThe Oregon can use either a bearingor course pointer on the compass.The bearing pointer indicates thedirection to your destination, andthe course pointer indicates your

relationship to a course line leadingto the destination. To select a bearingor course pointer, see page 31.

The bearing pointer points toyour destination, regardless of the

direction you are moving. If the bearing pointer points toward thetop of the compass, you are travelingdirectly toward your destination. Ifit points any other direction, turntoward that direction until the arrowis pointing toward the top of thecompass.

The course pointer provides anindication of drift (right or left)

according to the scale shown at theedge of the compass ring. The scale

refers to the distance between dotson the course deviation indicator.The course line to your destination is based on your original starting point.

Move back to the “course line todestination” to compensate for

deviation and to get back on course.This is most useful if you arenavigating on water or where thereare no major obstacles in your path.It also helps you avoid hazards toeither side of the course, such asshoals or submerged rocks.

Modifying WaypointsYou can edit waypoints to change the

name, symbol, comment, location,elevation, and depth of the waypoint.On the Oregon 550 or 550t, you canchange the picture. You can also usethe Waypoint Manager to relocate awaypoint to your current location,and to delete waypoints.

To edit a waypoint:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

2. Touch the waypoint.

3. Touch the attribute.4. Touch letters, numbers, or

symbols to make the changes.

5. Touch (except whenchanging a symbol). Change

other attributes, if necessary.

6. Touch to discard thechanges.

To reposition a waypoint to yourcurrent location:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

2. Touch the waypoint you want toreposition.

3. Touch Reposition Here.

To delete a waypoint:1. Touch Waypoint Manager .

2. Touch the waypoint you want todelete.

3. Touch Delete Waypoint.

To delete all waypoints touch Setup > Reset > Delete All Waypoints >Yes.

NOTE: On the Oregon 550or 550t, if you have selected a picture for a waypoint and thenyou delete the waypoint, the picture will not be deleted.

Move Down (or Up)—changes the order of the point

on the route.Insert—adds an additionalpoint on the route. Theadditional point is insertedbefore the point you areediting.

Remove—removes the pointfrom the route.

To reverse the order of points ona route:1. Touch Route Planner .

2. Touch the route you want toreverse > Reverse Route.

To delete a route:1. Touch Route Planner .

If you select Record, Show OnMap, a line on the Map page

indicates your track.

To save and view your current

track: Touch Track Manager > CurrentTrack.

Using the 3D ViewThe Oregon 400t and 550t have a 3Dview. Other Oregon models requireDEM (digital elevation model) datathat can be found in some Garmintopographic cartography. Go tohttp://buy.garmin.com for compatiblemap products.

2. On the Main menu of both units,touch Share Wirelessly.

3. On the receiving unit, touchReceive. The receiving unit

indicates when it is ready toreceive data.

4. On the sending unit, touch Send.

5. On the sending unit, touch thecategory of data to send.

7. Both units indicate that thetransfer is complete.

Using the Camera

You can take pictures with theOregon 550 and 550t. These picturessave a location that you can navigateto.

NOTE: Pictures will be saved and

displayed with either landscapeor portrait orientation. Theorientation is indicated by thecamera button position (vertical orhorizontal).

To take a picture:1. Touch Camera.

2. Turn the device horizontallyor vertically to change theorientation of the picture.

2. If necessary, press to enableor to disable low-light mode.

3. If necessary, press + or - to adjustthe zoom on the camera.

4. To manually focus the camera,touch and hold until the whitefocus frame turns green.

5. Release the to take thepicture.

6. Touch to exit the camera.

NOTE: To automatically focusthe camera, quickly press and

release to automatically focusthe camera and take a picture.

To sort the pictures in the PhotoViewer page:1. Touch Photo Viewer.

load them directly to the Garmindrive or create a new folder onthe Garmin drive (page 39).ORInsert a microSD card with .jpgimages in the microSD card tray

GeocachesGeocaching is a type of treasurehunting, in which geocachersseek hidden treasures using GPScoordinates posted on the Internet by

those hiding the geocache.

You can download Geocache sitesfrom www.geocaching.com. TheWeb site supports the transfer ofgeocache sites to your Oregon, and,

after registering and installing theGarmin Communicator plug-in fromwww.garmin.com/products /communicator , you can downloadgeocaches directly to your Oregon.

To navigate to a geocache usingGeocaches:1. Touch Geocaches > Find a

Geocache.

2. Touch a geocache location.

Backlight Timeout —select theamount of time you would like the backlight to remain on after youtouch the screen.

Orientation —select how the mapis shown on the page. North Upshows north at the top of the page.Track Up shows your current

direction of travel toward the top ofthe page. Automotive Mode showsan automotive perspective with next-turn information to use while driving





Automotive Mode

Auto Zoom —automatically selects

the appropriate zoom level foroptimal use on your map. When Off is selected, you must zoom in or outmanually.

Show Data Fields —hide or show

Advanced Map Setup —set thezoom levels, the text size, and thedetail level of the map.

Zoom Levels —select the zoomlevel for map items.

Text Size —select the text size formap items.

Detail —select the amountof detail shown on the map.Showing more detail may cause

the map to redraw more slowly.Map Information —touch the check box to display a map. This can behelpful if several maps are loaded onthe Oregon.

Tracks SetupA track is a recording of your path.On the Main menu, touch Setup >Tracks.

Pairing the OregonThe Oregon can be used with an

optional Garmin heart rate monitorto display your heart rate. It can also be used with an optional Garmincadence bike sensor to display your pedaling cadence. When connectedto the appropriate Garmin device, theheart rate and bike cadence values Map page, the Compass page, andthe trip computer.

Pairing is connecting your Oregonwith wireless sensors, such as aheart rate monitor or a cadence time, your Oregon automaticallyrecognizes the wireless sensor

whenever they are turned on andwithin range of each other.





To pair the Oregon with awireless sensor:1. Place the Oregon within 10 feet

(3 meters) of the wireless sensor(heart rate monitor or speed/cadence bike sensor).

2. Turn the wireless sensor on.

3. On the Main menu, touch Setup

> Fitness > Heart Rate Monitor or Bike Cadence Sensor .

4. Touch Search for new.

5. A “Connected” message appears.

NOTE: To prevent your Oregon

from communicating withwireless sensors, touch Setup >Fitness > Heart Rate Monitor (or Bike Cadence Sensor) > Off .

Reset1. Touch Setup > Reset.

2. Touch an item to reset it.

Viewing Your OregonInformationOn the Main menu, touch

Setup > About... to view the Oregonsoftware version, unit ID number,GPS software version, and legalinformation.

To connect your Oregon to yourcomputer:1. Lift the weather cap on the bottom

of the Oregon.

2. Insert the smaller connector onthe USB cable into the USB mini-B jack.

3. Connect the other end of thecable to a USB port on yourcomputer.

Installing a microSD™ Card

The Oregon microSD data card trayis located beneath the AA batteries.Purchase microSD cards from anelectronics supplier or purchase preloaded MapSource® detailed map

To install or remove a microSD

card:1. Lift the latch on the back of the

Attaching the Carabiner To remove the carabiner clip lift








Attaching the Carabiner A carabiner with a clip comes with

the Oregon 300 and 400 series unitsand is optional with 200 series units.

1. Position the carabiner clip in theslots on the mounting spine of theOregon.

To remove the carabiner clip, liftthe bottom of the clip and slide thecarabiner clip off the mounting spine.

Calibrating theTouchscreenThe Oregon screen does not

To calibrate the touchscreen:

1. While the unit is turned off, pressand hold the Power key forapproximately 30 seconds.

2. Follow the instructions on thescreen until “Calibration iscomplete” is displayed.
