By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Recently, Congress passed a tough budget agreement that set the funding levels of government for the next two years. This agreement addressed several issues, but also left 1.3 million Americans looking for work without the support of unemployment insurance during this holiday season. While the proposed agreement that

was recently passed in the House does seek to end some of the cuts to programs that benefit senior citizens, students and middle class families, it fails to address a dilemma faced by many of our fellow citizens who have fallen on hard times during this recovering economy. On December 28th 1.3 million

Americans receiving federal unemployment insurance are scheduled to be cut off. It is irresponsible and unconscionable that Republicans in the House of Representatives decided not to take action before they left Washington for the year. It is so contrary to the Christmas spirit to ask people to face the dawn of a new year without knowing how they are going to pay their mortgages, their rents, their car notes or their grocery bills. Our economy continues to be at

the mercy of these Republican-created crises, and only a long-term, responsible, and balanced budget agreement will provide certainty and stability. A meaningful budget proposal should create jobs, protect families, and boost our economy which has been steadily growing under the leadership of

President Obama.Extending insurance to the unemployed

would actually benefit our economy, according to the Congressional Budget Office. In a recently released report, the non-partisan body said that extending unemployment insurance would result in increased consumer spending and job growth in our nation. The insensitivity and lack of empathy

that is pervasive throughout the House GOP is denying protection for unemployed job seekers in the budget. That same lack of empathy is also driving those same members to demand draconian cuts to nutrition assistance programs that support working mothers, children, and families. If they have their way, nearly 4

million men, women and children will be denied access to the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP). School children from needy families that receive free school lunches would also be adversely affected. Many of the members of Congress who are suggesting such cuts quote from scripture to justify their positions. I, however, cannot find a single passage in scripture that justifies their proposals. Their positions are simply mean-

spirited, unsympathetic and wrong. They are void of compassion, and do not seek to help people. In fact, their interest is in punishing those who they believe do not share their political beliefs, and who do not support their political party. What we are witnessing is simply

another war on the poor and the defenseless. I, for one, will not allow these attacks to go without comment and counter-action, especially during a season that is associated with peace, love and joy. We cannot afford to forget those

people who are searching for work. We must ensure that their Christmas season is as joyous as those who are blessed to have job security.

Harming the weak at Christmas State Senator Royce West announces the

application process for the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program has begun. Since 1993, the program has provided paid summer employment for more than 2,100 students who live in District 23. The deadline for online applications for the 2014 Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program is December 31, 2013.

Highly motivated college students from Senatorial District 23 are matched with internships, mentors, character and skills building experiences, and community service projects/programs that will change their lives.

"The program continues Dr. Conrad's vision that all students, regardless of race, age, creed, color, religion, sex, etc., should be afforded every opportunity to obtain a quality education and then be able to use this education to secure financially and professionally rewarding employment," said Senator West.

As a Conrad intern, students gain invaluable work experience and transfer that practicum back into the classroom. Most interns remain in the program for several years, even while pursuing post-graduate degrees. Many have gained permanent employment with companies they have interned with, entities like Texas Instruments, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, AT&T and the Texas Department of Transportation, to name a few. Three former interns are now medical students at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

The class of 2013 had 147 interns. They were assigned to jobs at hospitals, city, county and state agencies, law, accounting and architectural firms and area corporations. For the second year, we placed an intern with the Dallas Cowboys and another with the Texas Rangers; a first!

This 2013 luncheon speaker was the Honorable Shirley Franklin - former Atlanta mayor and incoming visiting professor at the University of Texas - LBJ School of Public Affairs. She challenged interns telling them that "the world now belongs to them and if change is to take place, they must be the ones to do it."

The process is highly COMPETITIVE and membership indeed has its privileges.

Potential applicants should review the criteria and if they meet ALL the criteria, apply through the site by Tuesday, December 31, 2013. MANDATORY ORIENTATION is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Selection Committee Interviews will be conducted January 6 -10, 2014. (If a student is returning to school before the orientation and/or interviews, special arrangements can be made once documentation of early departure is provided, i.e. airline ticket/itinerary, 2014 spring school schedule, etc.)

Criterion for consideration in the program is:

Current enrollment as a full-time student at a 4-year college/university as an undergraduate or graduate student or enrolled at a medical,

dental or professional school Minimum Overall 2.25

GPA (no exception) First priority given to

applicants with permanent residence in Senatorial District 23 (central and southernmost parts of Dallas, Cedar Hill, Cockrell Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Glenn Heights, Grand Prairie, Hutchins, Irving, Lancaster,

and Mesquite)Complete and submit online application

(Log on to: www.conradleadership.com)Provide two professional references Provide official college transcript including

fall 2013 grades (to be sent once you return to school)

Submit 250 word essay entitled "Why is An Internship Important?"

Professional formatted, electronic version of your resume' in Word format

Community service/volunteerism reference "Students from all across District 23

and surrounding areas with varied degree backgrounds are recruited. We want them to know that there are possibilities for summer employment in various fields. The doors of opportunity will not be closed to them because they don't have degree related employment experience," added Senator West.

Grease Disposal available for residents

Garland, Texas - Environmental Waste Services, Garland Stormwater Department and Industrial Pretreatment are calling on residents to “Cease the Grease” this holiday season. After you fry or bake your holiday turkey, how about “thinking green” to recycle the grease? Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) improperly disposed down the kitchen drain, toilet, or storm drain system can cause property damage, health hazards and environmental problems and lead to costly plumbing problems. Avoid these problems. Instead of throwing away your used cooking oil, bring it to the Cease the Grease (CtG) station at the Garland Drop-Off Recycling Center at 1426 Commerce St. Residents can pick up empty CtG containers at the red CtG recycling station, fill the container with used cooking oil and bring it back to the CtG station. Citizens are also free to use their own capped containers. For larger quantities of liquid grease, drop off at the CtG station in a sealed plastic container and deposit in front of the CtG station. The Drop-Off Recycling Center is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Grease collected is recycled to make biogas used to fuel a Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dallas County.

Downtown Garland Street Closures

Garland, Texas - As construction of downtown infrastructure improvements and the City Center development proceed, some street closures are necessary.

Austin StreetThe portion of Austin Street east of the Granville Performing Arts Center (GPAC) main entrance at Fifth and Austin streets will be closed to through traffic as of Dec. 26, 2013. Patrons will still have access to the main entrance drives for entry and exit of events at the Atrium and GPAC. This eastern portion of Austin Street will remain closed for the duration of the City Center construction project.

Fifth StreetThe 200 block of Fifth Street (between Austin Street and State Street), will close to vehicular traffic for up to two weeks, beginning Dec. 30, 2013. This closure is necessary to allow work on the sanitary sewer line servicing City Hall.

State StreetState Street will close to through traffic from Third Street to Fifth Street (with local access only to residences and businesses to the east of the KCS Railroad). This closure will immediately follow the re-opening of Fifth Street in early January 2014. State Street will not reopen until the completion of the City Center development, currently anticipated in late 2014 or early 2015

For more information about Downtown Garland redevelopment, visit the Downtown Redevelopment page on the City’s website.

Storm Debris Collection Update

Garland, Texas - - Due to the damage to trees and vegetation caused by the recent winter storm, Environmental Waste Services will not be able to pick up all the tree limbs and other excessive brush on the regular collection schedule.

The EWS crews are utilizing all available manpower and equipment to assist residents in collecting the brush debris in the most safe, efficient manner. As of Wednesday, Dec. 18, the brush collection crews have completed Tuesday’s collection area and moved into Wednesday’s area, where they will be for several more days. Follow the progress of the collections at www.garlandenvironmentalwaste.com and click on the area maps for a daily update.

To assist the collection crews, residents are reminded to follow the normal guidelines for brush collection:

Place brush at the collection point at the front curb and place away from stationary obstacles such as mailboxes, phone pedestals, electrical and cable boxes

and low hanging wires.Brush should not create a safety hazard by blocking the view of motorists.Brush blocked by vehicles cannot be collected in order to avoid damage to

parked vehicle.Brush should not be mixed with other bulky waste such as mattresses and

furnitureResidents are reminded that they can haul material at no cost to Garland’s C.M.

Hinton, Jr. Regional Landfill and Wood Recycling Facility, located at 3175 Elm Grove Rd. in Rowlett. Residents must present their driver’s license and a copy of their most current utility bill. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Once EWS has completed an area, they will move to the next collection area. They acknowledge that brush may have been placed at the curb after the initial collection and will make a second pass for each collection day after all the areas have been covered for the first time.

By Vincent L. HallThe scene was set. It was the

former township of Soweto on the “Southside” of Johannesburg. The same Black enclave that White Afrikaners used to avoid at all costs.

But today a King was being remembered. “Madiba” the most prolific man of his own tribe of the same name, was receiving the regal treatment that he deserved.

God bless Rolihlahla Mandela, who was later named Nelson by his first grade English teacher.

If nothing else, hearing President Barack Hussein Obama at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela assured me of one thing; Obama can read.

Those of us who anticipate certain speeches from certain leaders, were taken aback a few years ago. As Obama delivered the Nobel Peace Prize speech in

Oslo, Norway, we thought maybe he read the sign wrong and thought he was pontificating at an NRA Convention.

P o s s i b l y embarrassed by the suddenness of his assent to the Nobel Prize reserved for the world’s most renowned peace p r o p a g a t o r s , Obama gave a Reaganesque like speech that sounded like a permit to bring war on anyone, anywhere, in the name of peace.

But there is something about the death of your relatives and those philosophically akin that will bring out the real you. Mandela

died so that Obama could live and BO wanted to make the best of the moment.

There was every earnest intent to pen this piece about the life, legacy, labor, love and liberating spirit of Nelson Mandela.

But a fitting tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela could not concentrate on his person; those

words must concentrate on his ability to create passion in others.

If you’re looking for way to remember how valuable the life of Nelson Mandela was, you can do it in the weeks and years to come. There will not be a stuffed stadium and throngs of people

when former Vice President Dick Cheney dies. Dignitaries from all nations and people of all races will not hasten toward the sacred site of his demise or his final resting place.

There won’t be a similar international outpouring when F. W. de Klerk is laid to rest. There were no mourners en masse of

this latitude and longitude for Bull Connor, George Wallace, Adolf Hitler and there won’t be for Justice Clarence Thomas.

Eulogies of grandeur and largesse are never wasted on those voices who shout at the world from the wrong side of history.

Nelson Mandela and the spirit of his

convictions will live again and I pray that it will be in the person of Barack Obama.

And maybe, just maybe this is the day we will point to where he began his true sojourn toward the endless war for human dignity.

That moment that commenced

a full fleshing out of what Obama believes about the poor and those susceptible to the heartless wielding of indiscriminate power around the globe.

As he stood there tall, erect, handsome and efficient with words, Barack Obama had to find some semblance in his imprisonment in America to Mandela’s imprisonment in South Africa. On this day, BO did not have to face the hecklers that dog him from the halls of Congress to the sticks of Middle America.

He did not have to worry about being called a Kenyan as if it were a slur of the worst order.

Barack Obama seemed to shake off the chains of his own political oppressors and realize that the struggle for peace and equality is war and not a sociological debate.

We must realize that the true measure of Nelson Mandela’s greatness cannot be found in who he was, it can only be found in what so many other men and women are not; but can be!

As Obama would say in his speech; “Mandela makes me want to be a better man!

Surviving unemployment during the holidays

Quit Playin’

by

Vincent L. Hall

by Robert Cantrallauthor of “The Fall of My Life”

Merry Christmas, you’re fired or your position is being eliminated or, don’t take this personally, but we are downsizing. Have you ever experienced any of these

scenarios? Are you living in fear that you may soon be facing this holiday greeting? I have lost my job nine times. How do you face your wife, your children, your parents, your brother or sister, your friends or neighbors? How do you avoid the pitfalls of fear, anger, anxiety and depression that only serve as self-defecting patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving? How do you turn a seemingly dreadful circumstance into a learning experience to further your good fortune? I have my share of experience. I have done a lot of things wrong in this volatile state and a few things right. Allow me to share with you the takeaways that have enriched my life to the point of actually being able to thrive and enjoy what can otherwise be one of life’s most stressful experiences.First thing’s first; you need a plan. If you

are married, you and your spouse need to openly and honestly communicate. If you are a parent, your family needs an immediate plan. You do not know how long you will

be without a paycheck so you need to know what assets you do have and how long you can remain liquid. Then you need to agree on how you can live more modestly throughout the course of your unemployment. I cannot emphasize enough the concept

of agreement. Neither the dictator nor the victim approach will bring a workable solution to this uneasy time. Your plan also needs to include a family job search strategy. If this is your first time at this experience, then don’t underestimate the fact that looking for a job is the hardest job you will ever have. The entire family needs to agree that getting back to work becomes your highest priority. This is not a paid vacation and everyone in the family needs to understand how they can contribute and support you.Your next step is to seek help. For your

job search, begin by letting anyone and

everyone know you need help. This is not the time to be humble, meek or mild. Stand up for yourself and your family. Be proactive. Treat your job search just like you did your job. Make a plan and execute on it every day. There are countless resources for application, resume and interview skills. Maybe you need to pick up a long-delayed new credential or skill. For the family, there are also endless possibilities to support your new needs. You will be shocked at the giving holiday spirit of neighbors, friends and family if you have the courage to make your needs known. Avail yourself of the services of the food bank and other social and charitable institutions that offer the wonderful gifts of clothing and Christmas presents. You will have the opportunity to return your good fortune to another in need in the years to come if you follow this course. Last but not least, get your head on

straight. I think the most important thing for you to know is that you are not what you do for a living, how much you make doing it, or how many material possessions you have accumulated doing it. There will

never be a greater opportunity for you to discover and exhibit who you are as a human being. I also think the second most important thing for you to know is that your family unconditionally believes in and supports you for who you are, and not only as a money tree. Do not allow guilt or shame to take

up residence in your consciousness. Do not accept any acting roles by playing a victim or being too proud. It has been my experience that life seems to keep repeating lessons until I learn them. This is not the time to be asking “why me.” This is your divine moment to ask what you can learn. Remaining grateful for what you have is the cornerstone from which to survive unemployment during the holidays. Robert Cantrall has worked in the financial services industry for more than 15 years. He has worked an additional 15 years in eight other industries for companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500. Throughout his career, Bob has lost his job nine times including when WaMu failed in 2008. A native of Oregon, Bob currently resides in Seattle.

Hall: Mandela! A Better Man

By James A. Washington

If you don’t know, I believe tests come from the Almighty while temptations come from the devil.

Many of you have heard this before and some have probably said it. I’m pretty sure God’s intent is to test you, but it is not necessarily His desire to break you. Triumph over these kinds of pop quizzes in life gives us the practical experience that turns into sincere testimony.

Without them, we would not be able to testify about God’s goodness and mercy. We wouldn’t be able to acknowledge Him as the reason we got through any of it.

Let me submit myself as an example of someone who can witness to another sinner and perhaps help another believer because I can relate to the trials and turmoil of someone else catching what appears to be hell here on earth. No one is immune to this.

As a matter of fact, I am struggling with the notion that it is a privilege to be singled out by God to endure certain hardships. It is at times difficult, but I’m thinking becomes one’s obligation to declare I am here today as a witness to the mercy, kindness and grace of the Almighty.

I guess what I’m trying to say is when it appears that all doors are closed and all options have run out, that is the perfect time to look for and depend on God for the answers that you need, even if they don’t appear to be the answers that you want.

There is a ram in the bush for every situation, but we have to be certain in our faith that through even mustard seed sized faith, mountains can be moved. Maybe it’s

better said this way. Even with mountain sized effort and no faith, you probably can’t move a mustard seed.

You see you’ve got to believe God will not abandon you. In our darkest hours and worst nights He is there with us. I know this because I’ve had what I knew was “my worst day ever,” and several “nothing can get any worse than this” moments, only to survive to battle the enemy yet another day.

God was with me then and dare I say He is with you now no matter the impossible of circumstance.

You’ve got to find peace in this because there is trouble ahead just as there was trouble back in the day.

Yeah but back then you didn’t know as I didn’t that the fight was fixed. We both have an unstoppable teammate.

For those who might be wondering where I’m getting this from, there is scripture that captures the essence of this. Turn your bibles to 1 Corinthians 10:12-13.

“So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.

And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But, when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

There is a ram somewhere. God provides it through His grace not your effort.

Our job is to hold on to our faith, know it’s there, listen and keep our eyes and hearts open. Once you submit to the fact that it ain’t up to you, then you will be privileged to open the door to God’s solution.

I understand how difficult this can be, particularly when you are caught up in your storms. But when you are able to accept this truth, life becomes easier and peace will bring you joy.

How you might ask are you supposed to accomplish this? My only challenge to you is to pray and practice. Be still and listen. Seek and ask.

May God bless and keep you always.

James

Spiritually SpeakingIt’s not over ‘til God says so

Do we really know what freedom is? Do we really understand the sacrifices that were made to achieve freedom in a physical sense, realizing that mentally we still have issues and should have concerns?

After seeing “Long Walk

to Freedom,” I posted this message on Facebook:

“Between ‘12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ - I don’t want to hear any whining or complaining from ANYONE!”

You see there’s been a lot of pain and suffering that is nothing like the little trials and obstacles that we face today.

“It’s raining, it’s snowing, it’s too hot, the traffic is horrible, the days are too long, the days are too short, I need a raise, my house is too small, I have to go to work, my car is too old,” and on and on.

While some don’t want to see movies like the aforementioned, I want to force everyone to see and then participate in discussions so we can realize that many of our behaviors are not only unacceptable and embarrassing; they are a slap in the face of our ancestors because they endured so much for basic

rights and privileges that we have no respect for.

Do you ever wonder what generations a century from now will say about the time that you were on this earth? Will you be on the right side of history in discussions about Black people in America? Will you be someone who existed or will you have really lived?

As this year comes to a close, we’ve lost some giants who “really lived.” We celebrated the lives of Evelyn Lowery and Nelson Mandela -- both left indelible marks and will be remembered for their unwavering efforts to make this world a better place.

I know, it’s easier to just exist, to do your time on earth. And to paraphrase the other Mr. Brown, “that’s your prerogative.” Just think however, if those who came before us just existed.

Meanwhile, if we really know our history, we should stop complaining and whining. We shouldn’t let a day go by that we don’t do something to make this world a better place.

It’s your decision! It’s your legacy.

Happy Kwanzaa and best wishes in 2014!

African-American businesswoman

introducesdotWed for CouplesWashington, DC, -Adrienne McAdory

is sure to make Internet history with the ownership rights to the new Top Level Domain, dotWED.

Beginning December 30, 2013 through January 28, 2014, newly engaged couples will have the opportunity to claim their own dotWED domain name as part of a Landrush pre-launch period. The first dotWED websites from Landrush go-live February 1, 2014. General Availability begins for the world April 1, 2014. Imagine the uniqueness and excitement of MaryandJohn.wed or TishaandEdmond.wed.

McAdory wound up with the ownership rights to dotWED almost by chance. A government IT consultant for more than a decade, she stumbled upon an article in the Washington Post announcing the sale of 1,000 new top level domains (TLDs).

Seeing this a great business opportunity, McAdory cashed in a large portion of her savings, formed a company (Atgron Inc.) and purchased the rights to dotWED.

Her timing is great. A third of proposals each year occur between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and another six million are predicted to occur on Valentine’s Day, reports Mashable.

McAdory plans to take dotWED global. The Mississippi native who has lived in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Beijing, has an international outlook on the reach of dotWED and “refuses to settle for only domestic”, says McAdory.

McAdory's mission is to provide couples around the globe with dotWED domain names. At a starting price of $50 per year for the first two years, couples can finally move away from the corporate dotCOM and celebrate marital bliss with dotWED.

For more than a decade, the leadership at Atgron has worked in the field of Information Technology Project Management. With a vision of communicating weddings to families around the world, Atgron Inc. embarked upon the creation of a new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) to address the lack of domain names for the average citizen.MAXIMIZE Your Exposure

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.

WEST NILE VIRUS RETURNS TO GARLAND

Remember the less fortunate and not just

during the holidays!

Parkland physician warns of winter dehydration

– As the leaves turn a rainbow of fall colors, frost glistens on the ground and the air is dry from a blustery chill, Parkland Health & Hospital System physicians caution that dehydration can occur just as easily during the winter as it does in the summer. And the consequences can be just as serious. Besides loss of fluid from daily activities, outdoor winter sports can cause just as much dehydration as summer sports. Factors such as cold dry air, wind chill, inadequate fluid intake, sweating, and even shivering all contribute to dehydration during outdoor winter sports. “As you move around in the cold, you may not be sweating, but water is still being lost through your breath in the form of steam you see coming from your mouth in frigid temperatures,” said Parkland’s Interim Trauma Medical Director, Alexander Eastman, MD. “When we have a patient brought in to the Emergency Department during the winter they may have multiple problems beyond the effects of the cold.” Problems, Dr. Eastman said, such as finding a vein for an IV can be more difficult when it’s cold outside. Winter

can accelerate dehydration because nearly everyone has an internal survival mechanism that constricts blood vessels in cold weather, to conserve heat and maintain body temperature. Regardless, the effects of winter dehydration can be just as devastating as during warmer months and the consequences can be complicated as it can accelerate hypothermia, frostbite or fatigue. Symptoms of dehydration can also include exhaustion, muscle cramps, loss of coordination, even stroke. When dehydrated, people can also become more susceptible to winter colds and the flu. Dr. Eastman also cautions that consuming too much caffeine in tea, soda or coffee may act as a diuretic by flushing water out of your system and contribute to dehydration. Avoid alcoholic beverages. Not only does alcohol increase the chance of hypothermia, it can cloud your judgment, impair your sense of direction and weaken your decision making ability in a cold weather emergency. “The key is to pay attention to your body, drink plenty of water and pace yourself,” Dr. Eastman said. “Once you start getting thirsty, it’s too late. You are already in the early stages of dehydration. It’s important that you don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink fluids, winter or summer.”

Her cuffs are actually removable! Her secret: Invisibelt KCuffs. These elastic, sparkly cuffs instantly transform any simple sweater or dress. Just slip them on your wrist for an entirely new, chic look. Choose from 5 fashionable, fun KCuff styles.

Shaun recently discovered Invisibelt KCuffs and not only wore them on the set to spruce up her outfit, but sent us a video from her dressing room encouraging her fans to try her new holiday accessory choice!

Known for her impeccable fashion sense, Shaun is only reiterating what thousands of other fashionistas have been saying...”why spend thousands of dollars on a new outfit when you can stock up on wardrobe staples and turn a blah to bling with a "flick of your wrist”. in your handbag or luggage for quick access and amazing results, for a fraction of the price.

With New Year’s around the corner and Valentine’s day soon to follow, we

are all under pressure to wear something fresh and exciting... yet save a penny or two.

and stylish accessories, creator Kathy Kramer has provided the perfect gift for your girlfriends or yourself for any special occasion.

The Lap Log-"Making Life a Little Easier"

Bamboosa, a well-known U.S. manufacturer of unique eco-friendly products, has acquired the exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute a new product designed to make the everyday use of iPads® and similar devices a more comfortable experience. The Lap Log© tablet holder is already in production at Bamboosa’s Andrews, S.C facility and will be distributed worldwide.

The Lap Log is one of the most universal tablet holders on the market. The cylindrical shape of the stand differentiates it from similar products in that it allows the user to adjust the angle of the iPad, tablet or eReader for better viewing without changing their body position. The wooden insert accommodates most tablet and eReader devices and works equally as well in either portrait or landscape mode. Furthermore, the “bean bag” design is made from all natural buckwheat hulls and provides for a stable platform on almost any surface. Most importantly- it’s made in America!

“Almost 200 million tablets and eReader devices have been sold worldwide,” said Mindy Saintsing, VP of Marketing at Bamboosa. “Now consumers are looking for a more comfortable way to use them without holding them or propping them on their laps or knees. We think this product delivers on that promise better than any other we have seen. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and made in America!”

The Lap Log is made of sustainable materials, including certified organic 100% cotton twill and naturally grown buckwheat hulls. A removable wooden insert that holds the tablet is crafted locally and is hand-sanded and stained with a natural, non-toxic finish.

Washable – If you happen to get a little dirt on your Lap Log when you're at the park, simply remove the wooden insert, dump the natural buckwheat filling into a container, and put your Lap Log into the wash. Flexible – The durable bean bag design lets you view any tablet or eReader at almost limitless viewing angles, and the buckwheat hulls allow your Lap Log to conform to any surface. Versatile – Use your Lap Log in bed, on the couch, sitting at your desk or on the kitchen counter. No straps, Velcro, or clips, and it easily adjusts to eliminate glare. Remove the wooden insert, and your Lap Log can be used as a comfy travel pillow! Travel Ready – The Lap Log weighs a little more than a pound, so you’ll be able to take yours anywhere. It's light enough to throw in your carry-on, and has the added bonus of doubling as a neck pillow! Going outdoors? Toss it in your backpack and have a convenient and stable stand for your device at the beach or on the trail.

The New York City-based firm combines the latest in cutting edge technology with the skills and talents of a master tailor to deliver customers the perfect fit every time – guaranteed.

“We take pride in every single item of clothing we construct,” said Knot Standard CEO Matt Mueller. “We invest 100% in getting the absolute perfect fit for each individual customer and we take very seriously our customer satisfaction.”

Launched in 2010, Knot Standard is the brainchild of John Ballay and Matt Mueller, two Americans then living in Dubai. They later partnered with Tarig El Sheikh, an experienced finance executive and have now expanded operations globally.

Knot Standard’s value proposition is straight forward: Allowing gents from all over the globe access to a world of talented tailors, Knot Standard offers handmade bespoke suits at price points that customers would usually pay for an off the rack, run of the mill suit.Upping the stakes, Knot Standard uses innovative 3D imaging via webcam to get the most perfect measurements for clients and laser cutting technology at the workshop to ensure each suit is cut to fit the individual customer.

“The perfect fit, individual style, and impeccable tailoring.” explains Ballay. “The key to being well dressed is always fit and that’s what gives Knot Standard a competitive edge. We don’t use patterns. Each bespoke suit is cut directly from a bolt of cloth to the measurements of the individual customer. We like to joke that our suits come in just one size – yours.”

From Wall Street to the West Coast, Knot Standard makes suits for every important occasion. Bespoke advisors are on hand 24 hours, seven days a week to help guide customers through the measurement process. They can also advise on suit types, fabric choice, slim vs traditional fit and an array of fashionable options including contrast color buttonholes, peak vs shawl collar lapels or spread vs straight collars.

GOD GIVES US GREAT CALM Sometimes God calms the storm. Other times God calm his child. Which will God have to do for you today? And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, sleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, care thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them; why are ye fearful? How is it that ye have NO faith? (Mark 4:37-40) And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And behold there arose a great tempest in the sea, so much that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying Lord save us: we perish. And he said unto them why or you so fearful? O ye of little faith. Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled, saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him! (Matthew 8:23-27) For Thought: Sometimes we are like the disciples; we don’t recognize who is in the ship with us. Are maybe we forget who is in the ship with us. The believer needs to remember who is in the ship with him at all times. Notice how Jesus spoke to the storm once and it obeyed. Jesus sometimes has to speak to man more than once to get him to obey. Thank God for mercy. Amen. Abraham was fully persuaded who was with him. (Roman 4:17-21) my question today is you fully per-suaded who is with you at all times. Paul was also persuaded (Roman 8:35-39) Paul was persuaded and convinced nothing in his past or present life would separate him from the love of God. When you are convinced of who is in the ship with you worry will be in your of the past. You want worry about tomorrow anymore. (Matthew 6:25-34) When you are absolutely convinced you will give it to God; you will learn to rest and trust God with all that concerns you. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Ask Alma

Should I Get Involved or

Mind my Business?

Dear Alma,

A male friend of mine moved to my city for a 6-month work assignment. To welcome him to the area, I took him to dinner and introduced him to my local friends.

Well, I just learned that he has been having a sexual relationship with a sorority sister, who’s also my best friend. I am uncomfortable with this situation because my male friend has a live-in girlfriend who has been with him for over eight years.

I feel like I need to say something, especially now that his assignment may be extended and his live-in girlfriend is planning a visit.

My girlfriend says she knows it’s temporary and that she plans to break up with him before his significant other arrives. She also confided to me that he told her that he loves her but cannot leave his live-in and doesn’t know what to do. She is not a dumb girl. She’s an attorney, and she’s got it going on.

Do you think it‘s really love? Should I get involved or mind my business?

Vicky

Dear Vicky,

If this were my BFF, I would say something like this: “What the hell…Really!! What are you thinking!” LMBO Naaw; just kidding. Don’t do that.

I’m a firm believer in what my Mama use to say: “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” You want to get her attention, so confront her in a manner that she can embrace. I can sense the pride and admiration you have for your friend when you talk of her accomplishments.

Granted, one’s occupation doesn’t exempt them from making unwise decisions. Anyway, your attorney-girlfriend is rationalizing her actions by thinking she’s really not being a skank because technically he’s not married. And since technically he’s not married, she can follow this yellow brick road and see where it leads.

Step up to the bench, my sistah, so you can hear me when I say this ain’t Kansas and, no, Sweetie, he’s not in love with you. He’s in really, really like, and I don’t blame him. He’s found a really smart woman to spend quality time with while he’s away from home. He offered you his live-in truth and you accepted it.

Explain to your friend that recognizing her true treasures within allows her to be prepared when a mature man comes along. A mature man will offer her the proper love, commitment and devotion she deserves.

It’s time to cut it off. Don’t wait for his main squeeze to visit; do it now. Remind her: Don’t settle for a second-hand man.

Reach out, give her a fist bump and say: “Stop stumbling in the dark with

Mr. Wrong, girl, when you could be dancing in the light with Mr. Right!”

Alma

NEW YORK —Acclaimed actor Anthony Mackie adds TV host to his resume as he joins “AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange.” The star, best known for his roles in “8 Mile,” “The Hurt Locker” and “Pain & Gain,” will emcee the sixth season of the documentary program, which brings films about popular culture across the African Diaspora to the small screen. The series, produced by National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and co-presented by American Public Television (APT), premieres on public television’s WORLD Channel on Monday, January 13, at 8 pm ET/10 pm PT and runs weekly on Mondays through February 10. Along with the WORLD Channel airings, APT will distribute “AfroPoP” to additional public television channels in February 2014.

This season “AfroPoP” cuts to New York City to examine the birthplace of the worldwide pickup basketball phenomenon with Bobbito García and Kevin Couliau’s “Doin’ It in the Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC,” co-presented by Latino Public Broadcasting (January 13). “AfroPoP” hoofs it across America and India to catch the dynamic collaboration of two dance masters, Indian Kathak guru Pandit Chitresh Das and African-American tap star Jason Samuels Smith, with “Upaj: Improvise” by Hoku Uchiyama, co-presented by the Center for Asian American Media (January 20).

The series then journeys to Africa for a special look at Sierra Leone with two films: Rebecca Richman Cohen’s “War Don Don” (“The War Is Over”), an inside view of the U.N. special court trial of senior rebel leader Issa Sesay for his role in the country’s 10-year conflict (January 27), and Daan Veldhuizen’s “Stories from Lakka Beach,” which captures the engaging stories of a colorful mix of villagers in the post-conflict nation (February 3). “AfroPoP” rounds the bases with “Boys of Summer” by Keith Aumont and a scrappy but determined band of young ballplayers onthe Caribbean island of Curaçao who are trying to make it to the Little League World Series for the eighth year in a row (February 10).

“As an actor I’ve been blessed to be immersed in various world cultures, so I’m honored to have a role in sharing compelling stories like these with people across America,” said Mackie. “Film is such a powerful tool in bringing understanding and harmony to people of all backgrounds and life experiences.”

“NBPC is especially pleased to be working with one of today’s brightest actors, Anthony Mackie, whose career we’ve been following since he starred in the 2004

feature film ‘Brother to Brother,’ which we helped fund,” said NBPC Director of Programming Leslie Fields-Cruz, who is also co-executive producer of the series. “With Anthony agreeing to serve as this year’s ‘AfroPoP’ host, in many ways it feels that NBPC’s important work has come full circle.”

Mackie joins an exclusive club. Past hosts of the series are Idris Elba, Anika Noni Rose, Wyatt Cenac and Gabourey Sidibe.

For all things “AfroPoP,” visit www.blackpublicmedia.org. To find out when and where to watch, including additional air dates for each of the episodes, check your local listings or go to www.worldchannel.org.

Anthony Mackie is an American television, feature film and stage actor. The Juilliard School’s Drama Division graduate was first discovered playing the role of Tupac Shakur in the off-Broadway production “Up Against the Wind.” Shortly thereafter , he made an auspicious film debut as Eminem’s nemesis, Papa Doc, in Curtis Hanson’s “8 Mile.”  His performance caught the attention of Spike Lee, who cast Mackie in the 2004 Toronto Film Festival’s Masters program selection “Sucker Free City” and “She Hate Me.” He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award-winning “Million Dollar Baby,” opposite Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Eastwood. Additional film roles include “We Are Marshall”; “Half Nelson,” with Ryan Gosling; “Night Catches Us,” opposite Kerry Washington; “The Adjustment Bureau,” which also featured Matt Damon and Emily Blunt; “Real Steel,” with Hugh Jackman; “Gangster Squad,” where he shared the screen with Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, and Ryan Gosling; “Pain & Gain,” with co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson; and “Runner, Runner,” alongside Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Gemma Arterton. Mackie earned IFP Spirit Award nominations for his performances in Rodney Evans’ “Brother to Brother” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker.”

His theatrical credits on and off Broadway include “Drowning Crow,” “McReele,” “A Soldier’s Play,” and “A Behanding in Spokane.” Earlier, his Broadway debut was as the stuttering nephew, Sylvester, alongside Whoopi Goldberg in August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” He won an Obie Award for his role in Carl Hancock Rux’s “Talk.” Mackie will soon join the Marvel Comics family playing Sam Wilson/the Falcon in the upcoming “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” set to be released on April 4, 2014.

It’s not likely that John Beckwith Sr. knew exactly what was before him when he boarded that bus from Ferriday, Louisiana in the mid 1960s. He wasn’t coming to Dallas with the intent of starting what would later be the number one funeral home in the National Funeral Director and Morticians Association.

He was leaving Louisiana because the Ku Klux Klan had told him he’d better. After witnessing others in his civil rights organization murdered and even set on fire, Beckwith took heed to the late night phone call that suggested that he was next. At that point, Mr. Beckwith’s dreams of relocating to Dallas were more about survival than success. Whether he planned for it or not, the next 50 years would prove to set the stage for a funeral home business and his son, John Beckwith Jr. would do more than ride shotgun with Dad, he’d learn early on to take the reins and run with.

Most people in the southern sector of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas are well acquainted with John Beckwith Jr. After all, if he hasn’t served one of them a warrant in his capacity as deputy constable, he may have stood before them to deliver a sermon as an ordained minister. In most cases however, Beckwith is known for his tenderness and strength in a most difficult time. That sad moment of making the final plans for a loved one. As Beckwith Jr., (Mr. B.) put it, being there to serve people is not just a job that he happens to be very good at, it’s his ministry. And everything that he has, does and is he attributes to that calling.

“I learned the business early,” said Mr. B. “My very first job in the funeral home was as Funeral Director in Charge. Dad allowed me the opportunity of on-the-job training and when I messed up, he cleaned it up and we just kept going.”

And go they did. From the opening of the original funeral home in Waxahachie in 1980 to the new and improved Dallas location five years later, Golden Gate Funeral Homes saw an increase of 150 cases a year. By 1988 the funeral home had gone from 200 to 800 annual funerals and a coveted position in the community.

So when the largest funeral home corporation in America began to approach and purchase mom and pop funeral homes in the Metroplex in 1988 and again in 1998, Golden Gate Funeral Home was primed and positioned to completely ignore the extremely generous offers of a buyout.

“We were and still are family-owned and operated,” stressed Mr. B. “We had an obligation to our employees, our community and our families to continue to be a staple in the community. You can’t

put a dollar amount on commitment and if we’re nothing else we are committed.”

Although selling wasn’t an option, competing had to be. For the next 15 years, Mr. B stood on the forefront of the funeral business and applied everything he’d learned to every opportunity that presented itself.

It’s difficult to imagine that the Mr. B of today was ever the young up-and-coming funeral director known as John Jr. Now, nearly three decades later, as he sits in the front office of the 20,000 square foot funeral home and crematory, the CEO of funeral homes serving Texas and Louisiana is regarded as the funeral home business marketing guru.

Beginning with his 2005 commercial that received more than three million YouTube hits to his TLC

reality show ‘Best Funeral Ever’, Mr. B is catapulting the industry well past the traditional boundaries that had been the norm.

“The TV show (Best Funeral Ever) has allowed us to introduce something new to the general public” said Mr. B. “It was time for people to see past all the limitations that were associated with the funeral business and start realizing that just as no two people are the same, no two funerals should be the same.”

When “Best Funeral Ever” originally aired in the latter part of 2012, the public wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Facebook, Twitter and the mainstream media were all a buzz with statements of distaste and disillusions. People couldn’t understand what it meant and why it had to be on TV.

Even some members of the African American community suggested that this show could singlehandedly set back the race a couple 100 years. Mr. B countered that “‘Best Funeral Ever’ was always meant to be a vehicle for education and advertisement and it really hurt when people didn’t see that.

“I never had any expectations for America but I was disappointed at the statements that were made by people that we do business with and our community.”

Regardless of the naysayers, Mr. B and TLC continued their collaboration for 16 more episodes of ‘Best Funeral Ever’ that began airing in early December, Monday nights at 9pm

There are features of a funeral for a man who loved breakfast, a celestial marriage and an Olympic service, to name a few. According to Mr. B, nothing about the show has changed and they’re “still giving families what they asked for.”

Recent reviews show that this time the general public seems to regard the show as a lot less upsetting and a little more entertaining. “We started people to talking about funeral services again, which will get us back down to the 5% cremations that we had 30 years ago and away from the 30 % that we’re seeing today. And if we can get people talking and laughing, then I think we’ve accomplished something,” said Mr. B.

Golden Gate Funeral Home has evolved from its mere 800 yearly cases to upward of 2500. They host a weekly radio show and local television show both under the moniker of “Ask the Undertaker.”

John Beckwith Sr. is now semi-retired and extremely proud of the innovation and accomplishments of his son. He now regards that threat on his life all those years ago as the defining moment in his life. The funeral home is known for its Stepping with Attitude Team (SWAT) of dancing pall bearers and have even given classes for professional mourners. In addition to Golden Gate providing services for babies 0 -12 years at no charge, they work with hospice companies and AIDS organizations to provide services for the indigent.

Although the business has grown by leaps and bounds and most of the members of the Dallas staff are regarded as official reality TV stars, Mr. B says not one of those things is the scriptural premise by which his funeral home is operated.

“Everything that I do is just representative of what I believe. I believe that funerals should be a special, individual celebration. I believe that we can change people’s ideas about final wishes. I believe completely in the services that we provide and I believe that the people we provide services for are very pleased. At the end of the day with everything that we do, all we want to hear is our Heavenly Father and our families say ‘Well done.’”
