CorianderA favourite Summer herb packed full of flavour and combined with Anise will add flavour to many Summer recipes.

BasilThere is absolutely no excuse not to grow this outstanding culinary herb this Summer. To keep up with the demand sow and grow your own Basil.

MintUse to garnish cool dessert dishes and add chopped to Summer coldrinks and cocktails – see our Mint Julep recipe on page 6. Fantastic to sow straight into the soil, thin out and transplant into pots. Plant amongst your Tomatoes in the vegetable garden.

LavenderOh yes, Lavender seed is available from Kirchhoffs. Why not try to sow and grow your own Lavender. Lavender is an excellent insecticide, repels mice, ticks and fleas. Fruit trees can grow in most spaces in the garden or on a balcony where space is of a premium. Consider the following elements when choosing the right fruit tree for its ultimate growing space.

Grape Vines, Grow over an arch or pergola. Grape Vines can also be grown in a container and then trained up a trellis on a hot balcony. Varieties available and suitable for our climate are Catawba and Hanepoot.

Citrus Trees, no garden or balcony can be without a Citrus Tree, it is a must. If this is the first time at growing fruit trees, Citrus varieties like Lime, Lemon and Kumquats are the way to go!

Soft fruit like Apple, Apricot, Plum, Fig and Pear Trees are ideally suited to larger gardens where you are able to create an “orchard”. Consider growing and training one of the fruit trees into an espalier. Literally translated it is a fruit tree or shrub whose branches are trained to grow flat against a wall, supported on a lattice or a framework of stakes. This can even be done on a balcony where the fruit tree will be planted directly into a container, placed flush against the wall and branches trained accordingly.

Quinces, Pomegranates, Almonds, Nectarines and Cherries, oh yes, these hard to find fruit trees are available for you to grow. Most fruit trees require at least 3 hours of good sunlight a day, so be careful where you plant your tree as you want to be able to harvest healthy fruit in the next couple of years. Plant with good compost and a handful of Neutrog’s Seamungus, an organic tonic that will provide a healthy start to your fruit tree.

Fruit Tree Companion PlantingTansy is a great companion to Apricot, Peach, Apple, Plum, Berries and Pear, while Grapes are better with Nasturtium and Garlic as companions.

While there is no ill effect on Peach, Plum or Berries, grow cabbage family (Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts and Cauliflower) and Solanum family vegetables (Eggplant, Tomato, Capsicum) away from Apricots.

Every garden should have at least one fruit tree, and now you have the largest selection to choose from. GardenShop boasts one of the largest selection of fruit trees available. All lovingly overwintered, rebagged and ready in our Kitchen Garden Department for your careful selection. Trust us, once you’ve experienced home-gro wn flavour and freshness, you will be thrilled at purchas ing your own fruit trees.

Herbs for Pets

A healthy pet is a happy pet and here is a list of plants highly recommended in your pet garden:

• Digestive Support: these herbs have a beneficial effect on the digestive system and ease discomfort: Dog Grass, Cat Grass, Pet Grass, Lemon Grass, Rosemary, Thyme, Fennel, Mint and Coriander.

• ArthritisandInflammation: adding these herbs to their food will reduce inflammation and ease discomfort: Feverfew, Comfrey leaves, Celery, Parsley and Yarrow.

• Tonic Herbs: mix these herbs regularly with their food to promote general health: Parsley, Comfrey leaves, Pennywort, Borage and Yarrow.

• Worms & Parasites: weekly addition to food will minimise the population of worms and parasites, promoting overall pet health: Yarrow, Thyme and Oregano.

For external use the following selection of herbs can be applied as a topical tea. Brew the herbs and let it cool to room temperature. Using a plant mister, lightly spray onto the affected area. This way you get the full benefit of the herb without worrying about your pet licking off oily and greasy ointment salves. Regular daily application is needed until symptoms improve.

• Flea Protection: a topical spray or a sleeve filled with the following herbs will deter fleas: Pennyroyal, Rosemary, Tansy and Pyrethrum.

• Skin Care: internal and topical application will keep the coat and skin healthy and reduce irritation. Internal and topical: Calendula, Thyme, Chamomile and Lavender. Only for external use: Southernwood.

The GardenShop Herb Collection has been extended to our four legged friends. You can now find potted selections of beneficial herbs for cats and dogs. Improve the overall health of your pet and signs of bad breath by simply chopping and sprinkling a fresh tablespoon of appropriate herbs to their food once a week. Alternatively, plant these pots in a spot where your cat or dog has direct access to their favourite herb plant!

While fresh herbs are best for either internal or external use, you can dry your excess

herbs for storage and wintertime. Use dried herbs the same way as fresh, but only use about half of the

volume of the dried herb as you would of the fresh
