What is the Garden to Plate program? The Garden to Plate program is based on Certificate I in Transition Education. This course supports learners with a permanent intellectual disability to develop the skills to find the most appropriate option for them in the community after leaving school. Options for involvement may include employment, volunteer work or further study.

Garden to Plate includes areas of study for personal development, life skills and planning for the future. Whilst participating in real-life activities of preparing and cooking meals the students learn more about language, literacy, about numeracy and technology relating to everyday living.

SGAE delivers Certificate I in Transition Education in different formats for various groups. The Garden to Plate program is one example of how this course has been adapted to build the daily living skills of students. Through activities including growing vegetables, shopping, budgeting and reading labels the course has been tailored to explore and address personal health, the effect of healthy eating and meal preparation in a weekly practical cooking class. There are added social benefits for participants coming together as a group to plan, prepare, cook and share a meal together in a supportive and caring environment.

Many people with a disability can feel isolated and disconnected from their community. The Garden to Plate program provides a safe, caring, fun and positive learning environment which is learner focussed. SGAE is a place students can feel at ease with a real sense of belonging; a place they can be themselves. The program is tailored to suit each individual learner to enable them to work at their own level and enhance their own abilities.
