Sports Meet 2014 (Nursery – Class II)

Where: Gitanjali StadiumWhen: 22 January 2014A palpable feeling of excitement pervaded the air as the young members of Garden High School put up a superb show on Sports Day. Nursery 1 swayed gently to Taare Zameen Par – their drill. This was soon followed by four races – Welcome to the World, School is Fun, Valentine’s Day and Romance on the Run.Next, Nursery 2 pupils dressed as little goblins took us to a land of wizards and witches, princes and princesses, and ghosts and fairies through their

drill – Of Spells and Enchantment. Their races were all part of the theme. The children of the Preparatory made us all aware of how beautiful our land is – rich in people, cultures and costumes. The children presented a lively drill to the beats of Jai Ho! The four races were Bhag Milkha Bhag, Gagri Sambhal Gori, Kerala Tila Mukhura and the Royalty Race.In their drill, Akhara Act, and their races Chota Bheem, The Jolly Jokers, Mr. Greedy and Wrestlers at Large, the little ‘pehelwans’ of Class 1 gave a display of some difficult bodybuilding exercises.

Class 2 gave the audience a taste of Punjab in their drill, Balle Balle. The participants performed the vigorous Bhangra to the rhythmic beats of the dhol. The four races which followed were on the same theme – a celebration of the spirit of Punjab. Each and every participant received a prize while some extra-lucky ones went back home with shining medals round their necks. Indeed it was an afternoon to remember as little pupils between the ages of 3 to 7 put up a marvellous performance, making their families and teachers proud.

The Primary School Assembly on 14 March 2014 to bid farewell to Class 2 was a moving experience for both teachers and pupils. These pupils would now be going to their new class, i.e. Class 3, in the main building. The teachers told the children, who looked rather subdued and sad, how proud they were of their outgoing pupils. Some of the pupils of Class 2 sang, recited poems and played the synthesizer while some narrated a few of their memorable experiences of the days spent in the Annexe. The Assembly ended with Classes 1 and 2 singing six of their favourite songs. This was followed by songs sung by Nursery 2 and Preparatory. It was well worth one’s while watching and listening to them sing Yeh Dosti.

End-of-Term Assembly 2013–14

Nursery 1 sang Yankee Doodle amongst other songs. It was not only a day of memories and

goodbyes, but also a day of looking forward to the beginning of a new journey.

When: Where: HexagonConducted by: Dr Sanjit Saha, Head, Department of Emergency Medicine, Medica Superspeciality HospitalParticipants: Head Boy, Head Girl, Student Leaders, Staff of GHS & Bus Escorts

The objective was to tell the parti-cipants about some medical emergen-cies and to teach them ‘hands-on’ a few basic skills that can be used to deal with them. The two-hour session each day covered essential medical procedures and the use of appropriate equipment. The importance of recognizing the signs of a medical emergency was emphasized, for acting on these signs can often save a life.Besides teaching practical skills, Dr Saha gave a PowerPoint presentation on:

23 June – 5 July 2014 (a) Situation analysis and patient safety – recognizing the indications of an emergency like fainting or breathing difficulty.(b) Basic life support like positioning the patient before calling for help, and ascertaining the severity of the situa-tion by prodding gently or exercising the head-tilt — chin-lift.(c) Airway management for resuscita-tion and safe use of equipment — learning how to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) till medical help arrives.(d) First Aid for a choking child — removal of a foreign body such as a marble or a morsel of food from the trachea. Sometimes children choke when they swallow something carelessly. Signs of choking include gasping or inability to breathe or talk, bluish colour of the skin, panic, and

clutching at the throat. In such cases, the Heimlich manoeuvre (sudden back thrust) was recommended.(e) Treatment of asthma in children – Dr Saha clarified that an allergy and asthma are two separate conditions. Asthma is a chronic lung disease of the bronchial air tubes, while an allergy is an overreaction of the body’s immune system. The symptoms in both cases include difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, coughing and wheezing.Emergency treatment of asthma includes the use of oxygen, inhaled bronchodilators (such as albuterol). Long-term asthma treatment includes inflammation ‘controllers’, such as inhaled bronchodilators. Allergies caused by food, dust, pets or pollen should be taken seriously as some allergies can be life-threatening.(f) Keeping a record of the medical history of a pupil in the case of bronchial asthma helps in ascertaining the severity of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Finally, on behalf of Medica, Dr Saha gave an assurance that whenever needed, an ambulance, equipped with specialized equipment for emergency care and for transporting patients in a lying position, would be provided to this School. In a medical emergency, calling for an ambulance could mean the difference between life and death. A call to Medica on an Emergency Medical helpline (66520177) will always be answered by trained personnel who will guide the callers to the appropriate resources.

They put the burgers together in class and made themselves a tasty snack!

They showed their teachers how a normal everyday sandwich can be made interesting and healthy at the same time.Class 2 donned their Chefs’ hats and wore their daddies’ old shirts or mums’ aprons to make Frankies and Smileys. Frankies were hot dog buns with chicken sausages, layered with mayonnaise and cheese slices. For dessert, they had colourful Smileys made with slices of cake slathered with a jam of their choice and decorated with colourful ‘gems’.Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson would have been proud of the culinary skills the children displayed.
