ABOUT HANSRAJ COLLEGE

ABOUT GANDHI BHAWAN The Gandhi Bhawan has provided a forum for occasional

discussions on Gandhian thought and practice; it has

organized national/ international seminars; it has endeavored

to promote awareness of Gandhian concept and methods of

health and well-being. It has built up a sizeable working

library. And it provides the academic meeting ground for

socio-cultural issues

Written by Mahatma Gandhi during his travel from London to

South Africa in 1909, Hind Swaraj remains to be a classic.

The text comprising twenty short chapters was structured in

a dialogic form between the Reader and the Editor, where

Gandhiji in the role of the Editor used the opportunity to unfurl

his thoughts on some of the most fundamental issues

concerning humanity in general and Indian society in

particular. In the context of early twentieth century, the book

provides an alternative vision of modernity by pointing at the

vagaries of modern civilization and also suggesting its

possible panacea. At the same time it provides a direction to

India’s struggle for swaraj, where swaraj is not defined in its

popular meaning of political independence alone, but covers

the entire gamut of possibilities for an inclusive and

collective experience of freedom. Extensively inspired by the

indigenous knowledge system and resources, it also entails a

challenging project of reshaping the imagination of Indian

minds for a future that was more sensitive to the challenges

facing humanity at large, thereby placing India in a leadership

role for the future cosmopolitan world order.

In more than 100 years since Hind Swaraj was first published,

there have been many interpretations, scholarly works and

articles published on the subject. One of the more recent

publications is Making of a Hindu Patriot: Background of

Gandhiji’s Hind Swaraj (Vol. I & II) by J. K. Bajaj and

M. D. Srinivas which provides an important vantage point to

understand the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. It is a work in

intellectual history that traces the evolution of Hind Swaraj as

a text of religious patriotism. It revisits the process through

which Gandhiji’s ideas took shape and matured epitomizing

in the production of Hind Swaraj that remains relevant for all

age and time. It’s most unique contribution is not only in the

way it maps the genesis of Gandhiji’s philosophy by carefully

situating it in the context of late nineteenth and early

twentieth century but also in its presentation of that

philosophy in a dialogic form which takes the shape of a

discourse providing a holisitic understanding about Gandhiji’s

thought process and his evolution as Deshbhakta Mahatma.

In the light of existing works, this FDP aims to revisit

Gandhiji’s philosophy particularly with reference to Hind

Swaraj.

The objective of this Faculty Development Programme (FDP)

is to educate and enlighten the participating faculties about

Gandhiji’s philosophy, focusing on his masterpiece the Hind

Swaraj. Making of a Hindu Patriot is an important recent

intervention in the already existing collection of work on

Gandhiji’s philosophy and the programme aims to use it as an

entry point to the diverse discourse on the subject. It is

expected that after the FDP the participants would be able to

develop a critical framework to understand the possibilities

within the field of intellectual history in general and Gandhiji’s

thought in particular.
