Project Requirements: Located within the House of Fraser store at theMeadowhall Shopping Centre, Sheffield, Café Zest wasfinding it hard to attract customers and those who didvisit found an uninviting atmosphere that didn’t enticethem to stay for long. The Head of Engineeringand Maintenance at House of Fraser commented:“The location of Café Zest isn’t the most prominent inHouse of Fraser and so I suggested to Massarella’s thata refurbishment of the café, with particular emphasis on its lighting, would help to attract more visitors.”

The low voltage lighting was also found to be creating anumber of issues. The heat they emitted wasn’tparticularly pleasant for customers and meant theluminaires consumed a lot of energy. The non-sealedunits resulted in debris collecting in the fittings whichcreated a mess each time the lamps were replaced.

Having already supplied low energy luminaires toHouse of Fraser, Gamma Illumination was the firstchoice for Café Zest. “House Of Fraser had first-handexperience of the benefits that using the correct lightingcan bring to a retail environment and Gamma has played a key role in helping us to achieve this.”

Project Solutions: It was essential that the lighting scheme made fooddisplays appear more vibrant, helped to attractcustomers into the café and encouraged them to staylonger by creating an inviting and relaxed ambience.

After carefully considering all of the requirements, theideal solution for the application was found to beGamma’s TTX LED downlight, incorporating theXicato LED module. TTX fittings with a centre etch glass, 40° reflector beam, 1000lm output and 3000K colour temperature provide ambient light around the café.

Additional TTX fittings, with Xicato’s increased colourrendering properties, create a wall wash effect aroundthe perimeter to highlight the pictures and features ondisplay. The luminaires above the food counters help tointensify the vibrancy of the food on sale.

Project Results: Since the refurbishment, Café Zest has seen an increase in the number of visitors as well as the amount spent during each visit.

In addition to the immediate benefits of using TTXdownlights, Cafe Zest can now look forward to reducedenergy bills, this is down to the 22W Xicato LED modulehaving an average rated life of 50,000 hours, compared to 4,000 hours offered by the 50W low voltage being used previously.

Further savings are being realised as a result of theconsiderable reduction in maintenance required over the life of the luminaire.

Due to the continual investment in lighting technology the performance values stated in this case study may have improved. Please check the latest datasheets at www.gamma-uk.com for up-to-date information.
