Establishing Shots• In comics, an establishing shot is the
first panel of a new scene.
• intended to inform the reader about where this new scene is taking place.
• They are often wide or large panels
• They often show a landscape, city scape or location of the story.
What considerations would you need to make when telling your story with an establishing shot? Talk to your neighbour and share answers
Variations of the establishing shotSubjective establishing shotsWhen the contents of the panel are seen through the eyes of a character.
Why use this type of establishing shot?
Variations of the establishing shotMedium angle establishing shotsIf the horizon line of the panel are near the centre it is a medium angle shot.
What is the effect of this type of shot?
Variations of the establishing shotLow angle shotsThe scene is seen from a low angle.
What does this do to the objects in the scene?
Variations of the establishing shotTilt angle shotsIn this type of establishing shot the horizon line is shifted to an angle.
How does this make you feel?
Can the establishing shot set the mood of the scene? If so how?

Learning Outcomes:
Drawing landscapesLandscapes have layers- foreground, middle ground and background
The background is the most distant and usually less defined and softer in effect.
The middleground forms the main part of most landscapes. The structure of this layer is important because the larger shapes produce most of the interest.
The foreground is important to the overall effect, the details guide the eye to the middleground. Often the foreground doesn’t contain a lot of content but is well textured.
Drawing landscape thumbnail images• As comic artists read through
scripts they often draw very simple thumbnails (small rough sketches)
• This helps them record mental visuals
• It is a form of brainstorming and generating your ideas
• As with all forms of brainstorming some ideas might not be useful however, some of the less useful ideas will springboard and spawn other ideas that might be used in the final comic.
TASK- Draw out thumbnail sketches
How can you use professional practices on this task? How might you consider other cultures in your landscape drawings?
