Since taking three of four from Eastern New Mexico at the end of March, the Rams are 5-9 and have lost four straight. ASU is 9-14 in road games and 3-11 when playing away contests in conference play. Those three wins came in the opening weekend of LSC play at Cameron. ASU enters the weekend in fourth in the LSC, one game up on the Greyhounds and a half game back of Tarleton State in third. For them to clinch a spot in the conference tournament, the Rams will either have to win two games this weekend or win once and need the Texans to take one from the Javelinas. ASU has the tie breaker over ENMU unless the Greyhounds sweep the weekend series. ENMU-ASU Series History Angelo State has a 28-12 lead in the all-time series following them winning three of the four games earlier this season in San Angelo, Texas. Eastern New Mexico is 6-9 versus the Rams at Greyhound Field. Last season, ASU went 3-1 in Portales with the Greyhounds taking the series finale 8-7 on a walk-off hit. The only time ENMU has won a series was in 2011 at home when they won the three-game set. Eastern’s longest winning streak over the Rams is two, coming in 2011, while ASU won eight straight from April 16, 2011 - April 6, 2013. Live Game Coverage Live stats (free) and video (PPV) will be available for all three games this weekend. The links can be found on baseball’s schedule page on GoEasternAthletics.com. All three contests will also be broadcast on 1450 AM KSEL Country with Doc Elder providing the play-by-play. On Deck The Greyhounds will either compete in the LSC Tournament that will take place May 8-10 or see their season come to an end this weekend. LSC tournament Qualifying ScenariosThere are only two scenarios in which the Greyhounds will be able to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time since 2009. ENMU must win all three games against the Rams this weekend or win two of the three contests and have Texas A&M-Kingsville sweep Tarleton State. Should the Greyhounds be victori-ous in all three games, they would be either the third or fourth seed depending on the results of the TAMUK/TSU series. If Eastern qualifies for the tournament in the

second scenario, they would be the fourth seed while ASU would be the third seed, having won the season series over ENMU.

two Straight LSC Weekly Award for burksMatthew Burks was named one of the two Lone Star Conference Hitters of the Week for the second straight week after his performance against Cameron and Lub-bock Christian. For the week, he hit .625 with a team-high 10 hits, a 1.000 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage. Burks also hit his conference leading ninth and 10th home runs while scoring seven times and driv-ing in five.

Winning Season Within ReachFor the first time since 2000, Eastern New Mexico can finish a season with a winning record. The Greyhounds will either have to sweep the three-game series against Angelo State or take two out of the three games and fail to qualify for the LSC Tournament. In the previous 13 campaigns, ENMU has finished with a .500 record twice (2008 & 2009) and finished a game under .500 once (2005). The Greyhounds have only had three winning seasons in the 23-year history of the program.

burks Home Run blastsBurks has showed off his power this season as he has smashed 10 home runs. He is the first Greyhound to hit double-digit homers in a season since 2000 and is tied for fifth on the season records list with Matt Masiarek (2000). Burks is also one of just five ENMU hitters to have 10-plus dingers in a campaign with Steve Marquez holding the record at 12 that he set in 1995 and matched a year later.

total bases Century markJunior outfielder Matthew Burks reached the century mark in total bases with two singles at Lubbock Christian. He became the 20th Greyhound to reach the mark in a season and first since Freddy Carmona in 2009. After the series against Cameron, Burks moved into a tie for ninth with 114 total bases. The single-season record is 131 set by Loren Wood in the 1999 campaign.

100+ Assists SeasonBrett Ackerman was credited with his 100th assist of the season in the first game of the series at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He became the 35th Eastern player to reach the mark in a campaign and first to do so in back-to-back seasons since Tyler Hayes in 2007-08. Ackerman currently has 115 assists, the 20th most in program history. The record is 143 set in 2008 by Hayes. burks Garners LSC Hitter of the Week HonorMatthew Burks was awarded the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week award for his performance last week at Texas A&M-Kingsville and Wayland Baptist. Burks hit .467 with a .733 slugging percentage, .556 on-base percentage, five runs and 4 RBIs. He also hit his eighth home run of the season to tie for the conference lead. It is the seventh LSC player of the week award for ENMU this season and fifth for a batter.

Season Walks Record WatchBlake Cooper drew four walks in the series against Camer-on to move into a tie for fourth on the ENMU single-sea-son list with 35. The others he is tied with are Ryan French (2006), Bryan Moore (2004) and Shane Shallenberger (1995). His walk total is the most by a Greyhound since 2009 when Clayton Young set the record with 40.

Swiping bagsFour steals against Cameron increased the Greyhounds total to 78 this season, the third most in program history. They are four steals shy of tying the 2004 team’s mark for second and need 10 to tie the school record of 98 set by the 1995 squad.

burks’ Home Run Streak ends at 4Matthew Burks saw his home run streak end at four consecutive games as he was held with out one in the series opener at Texas A&M-Kingsville. His streak was the longest by a Greyhound since at 1999. The previous record of three was held by four players: Freddy Carmona (2008), David Jones (2001), Dallas McMann (2002) and Loren Wood (1999). Nine is the top mark in Division II and the LSC which was set by Cameron’s Chase Larsson from March 18-April 1, 2011.

The weekly award is the sixth for ENMU this season and fourth for a batter.

Sweep 17 Years in the makingEastern New Mexico pulled off a rare feat over the weekend. They swept Tarleton State for the first time since 1997. It is the third time the Greyhounds have taken all the game in a series from the Texans with the first taking place in 1996.

downed by Walk-OffsIn their three losses at Angelo State, ENMU was defeated on walk-offs in all three contests. NCbWA SC Pitcher of the Week to ArtalejoMatthew Artalejo was selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s South Central Region Pitcher of the Week after his record performance at Cameron. His complete-game shutout of the Aggies that saw him throw a record 11 innings in the game propelled him to the award. He is the second Greyhound to earn the weekly award this season (Ryan Forkel) and the fourth all-time since the honor was established in 2011, which is the second most for a Lone Star Conference program. Artalejo also became the first ENMU hurler to be selected for the award.

2nd LSC Pitcher of the Week Honor for ArtalejoArtalejo earned his second Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week award after throwing a complete-game shutout of Cameron in the second game of the series. Cooper Holds LSC Putout mark for 3:12Blake Cooper set a Lone Star Conference record with 23 putouts in an 11-inning victory at Cameron. He broke the previous mark of 20 held by three athletes and last reached by Tarleton State’s Colten Boothe last season. The record though would not last long as Aaron Blair from West Texas A&M surpassed Cooper’s new record just three

hours and 12 minutes later in a 15-inning contest.

School’s Single Game Assist Record matchedIn the second game of the series at Cameron, Dylan Nault tied the program’s single game assist record with nine. He became the fourth Greyhound to reach the mark as Xarin Escobedo set the record in 2002 against Wayland Baptist. Garrett Cook and Daniel Binz tied the record in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

monticello’s multiple Complete GamesAfter becoming the first Greyhound in two seasons to throw at least two complete games in a season, Ben Mon-ticello added to his season total as he went the distance in his third game in the series opener at Cameron. David Gomez is entering his first season as the head coach of the Eastern New Mexico Uni-versity baseball program. He became just the third coach in the program’s 22-year history in September. Gomez comes from Alcorn State where he had been an assistant coach and recruiting coorinator for the past four years. He was in charge of all as-pects of recruiting, developing the pitching staff and hitters, designed team practice plans and implemented pitcing strength training programs. During his time with the Braves, they played in the Rice Regional during the 2011 Division I Base-ball Tournament after ASU won the program’s first ever Southwest Athletic Conference Champi-onship. In his three seasons, the team produced 11 all-Conference selections, compiled a 57-26 SWAC record, had their first Cape Cod League participant in school history and was ranked fifth in the nation in stolen bases with 125 in 2013. Prior to his tenure with ASU, Gomez was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas for four years. He helped produce seven Major League Baseball draft picks, including the first French-born player ever selected, and the program’s first NJCAA Baseball First Team All-American while the team was second and 14th in the country in hitting in 2009 and 2008, respectively. Gomez spent four years at New Mexico Mili-tary Institute as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for baseball and business manager for the entire athletic department. During his tenure, the Broncos had three NJCAA Academic All-Americans and broke the school record for wins in three consecutive seasons. He also brings international coaching experi-ence as Gomez served as an assistant coach for the French National Baseball Team in September 2007 during the European Championships which also served as an Olympic Qualifying event. Along with his coaching experience, Gomez also has years of playing experience. He began his collegiate career at NMMI where he was a pitcher and outfielder and was named a co-captain. Gomez finished his collegiate career at Southern University and was coached by Roger Cador, who has led the school to 13 SWAC Championships. Gomez also played college sum-mer and semi-professional baseball in the Baton Rouge, La. area. A graduate of South Lafourche High School in Cut Off, La., he earned all-region, all-district, all-parish and Team MVP honors in baseball while also lettering in basketball, football and track. Gomez earned his master’s degree in sports administration from New Mexico Highlands in 2009, a bachelor’s of arts degree in speech communication in 2002 from Louisiana State University and his associate’s degree from NMMI in 1999. He is married to the former Charity Savedra and the couple has a son, David III.
