Game Jam Gallery List

The theme for the 2013 ROM Game Jam is Foretelling the Past. We’re excited to see how you can find fun and innovative ways to make connections between past and present and to share the ways we learn more about the past, such as archaeology. 

Games should focus on ROM Ancient Cultures galleries and artifacts, though you can also include later time periods if game play requires it (e.g. if your game involves time travel of a character from an ancient culture to the contemporary world). 

Here, we’ve provided a list of selected galleries that are well‐suited to the Foretelling the Past theme. This list is keyed to the map: the gallery numbers in the list below are the gallery numbers marked on the map. Please note that some galleries focus entirely on ancient cultures, while others contain objects from ancient through modern times. 

Yes, it’s a little confusing—but we’re here to help! Please feel free to ask us more about our theme and the best spots in the museum to check out in order to prepare for the Jam. We’ll walk you up the galleries and be on hand to answer your questions.

Eaton Gallery of Rome (310)Emperors and Gladiators are just the beginning…What? Over 500 artifacts highlight aspects of daily Roman life, the contrasting tastes throughout the vast Empire, and the Roman influence on diverse local cultures.Where? Extending beyond the Mediterranean world as far as Britain and Ireland to the north and Roman Egypt to the south.When? From approximately 900 BC to AD 476.

Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Gallery of Rome and the Near East (310)A growing empireWhat? Over 200 artifacts including jewelry, floor mosaics and figurines are showcased. Look within the gallery for video documentaries and tactile displays offering unique learning experiences for visitors of all ages.Where? Roman expansion to the east into the lands of what is present day Syria, Jordan and Israel.When? Approximately 64 BC to AD 135.

When Istanbul was Constantinople What? Over 230 artifacts in themed displays that include State and Church, Pilgrimage, the Orthodox Church, Jewellery, Glass work, Coins, Imagery, and Trade and Commerce.Where? The Mediterranean and the Middle East centered on Constantinople, present‐day Istanbul in Turkey.When? AD 330 – 1453

Where Western culture beginsWhat? More than 1,500 objects, presented in chronological themed displays including Day‐to‐Day Activities, Entertainment, War and Hunting, and Politics.Where? Greece and the Mediterranean region from Italy to coastal Turkey.When? Approximately 700‐30 BC.

Gallery of the Bronze Age Aegean (308)

The rise and fall of three mighty civilizations.What? Over 100 artifacts in four thematic areas: the Cycladic, the Minoan, the Mycenaean, and the Geometric Period.Where? Greece and the islands of the Aegean SeaWhen? Approximately 3000‐700 BC.

A.G. Leventis Foundation Gallery of Ancient Cyprus (307)The crossroads of the Eastern Mediterranean.What? 300 objects focus on art created in Cyprus between the Bronze Age and the Hellenistic period, divided into thematic displays. Where? Cyprus is nestled in the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, south of present‐day Turkey.When? Approximately 2200‐30 BC

Galleries of Africa: Egypt (305)

An epic civilization with timeless appeal.What? The ROM's Egyptian collection is comprised of approximately 25,000 artifacts, and close to 2,000 of these are on display in the gallery.Where? Ancient Egypt was located in the north east corner of the African continent.When? From 4,000 BC to AD 400

Galleries of Africa: Nubia (306)The Kingdom of Kush: The Lost civilizations of ancient NubiaWhat? This gallery sheds light on the ancient Nubian civilization that flourished in the Nile Valley for thousands of years. Where? A region alongside the Nile river, encompassing parts of present‐day Egypt, North Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.When? Approximately 100,000 BC to AD 1323.

Wirth Gallery of the Middle East (302)The cradle of civilizationWhat? More than 1,000 artifacts from the Middle East are presented in thematic displays of Documents and Writing, Technology, Spirituality and Religion, Art in Life, and Arms and Armour.Where? Fertile Crescent, stretching from the Eastern Mediterranean and Iraq to Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.When? From the Paleolithic Age to AD 1900.

Gallery of Chinese Architecture (103)

The largest collection of Chinese architectural artifacts outside of China.What? Gallery contains approximately 200 artifacts, including roof tiles, architectural features and embellishments, statuary and tomb‐related objects.Where? China When? From approximately 300 BC to AD 1900

Matthews Family Court of Chinese Sculpture (103)

One of the ROM’s most inspiring spacesWhat? This gallery is comprised of approximately 75 objects, of which 14 are large free‐standing pieces.Where? ChinaWhen? Over 2,000 years of Chinese sculptural tradition are represented, from approximately 200 BC to AD 1900.

One of the world's great civilizations.What? Over 2,500 exceptional artifacts shed light on Chinese culture through the ages including daily life, religion, politics, economics, and burial customs.Where? ChinaWhen? From Prehistory (~10,000 BD) to the 20thcentury AD.

Bishop White Gallery of Chinese Temple Art (103)Religious murals survive the march of time.What? Gallery features include three 13th‐14th century temple murals and large wooden sculptures that date from the 12th‐15th century. One of four galleries featuring Chinese art and archaeology.Where? ChinaWhen? Murals date from the Yuan dynasty (AD 1271 – 1368), and the sculptures from the 12th to 15thcentury.

From Samurai to the Tea Ceremony.What? Approximately 600 objects highlight the development of Japanese culture through the ages. Where? Japan is a series of islands off the coast of East Asia, flanked by the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.When? From the 1st to 20thcenturies AD.
