How to use these cards...Game Title: Identify games linked on curriculum.

Skill Cards to use with each game: Focus on one skill for each game session to provide effective instruction.

Fundamental Movement Skills: Building foundational movements and sport skills are essential for kids preparing to be athletic throughout their lives.

Approriate Practice levels: Most games can be played by kids of all ages. We’ve identified the main practice range(s) for which each game is best suited.

Setup/Play instructions: Each game card has it’s own instructions for executing the game.

GAME: Red Light, Green Light 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Starting and Stopping, Kicking with Ball

Whistle, Splashball balls; Laps of 25 yards; 5-10 minutes

1. Start by having athletes line up at one end of the pool, making sure to spread out to avoid kicking anyone. 2. Alternate between using your whistle and voice comands to start and stop the athletes as they progress through the lap.3. Have athletes alternate between flutter, breast and eggbeater kicking. Athletes can stand on bottom when stopped.4. The first athlete to complete a full lap is the winner.5. Repeat as necessary, allowing for rest as needed.

GAME: 1 Handed Jumps 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Referee recognition and eggbeater

Whistle ; Shallow end of pool 5 minutes, sets of 10 jumps per hand.

1. Start by having athletes spread out where they can stand, make sure they are an arms length away from teammates.2. On the coach’s whistle, athletes will do one 1-handed jump.3. Try to fake out the athletes to see how well they can pay attention. This adds an additional element of anticipation.

GAME: Jousting 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Double Threat Position, Ball Protection

Water polo balls; Open pool space; 5-10 minutes.

1. Start by separating athletes into groups of 2, each player with a ball. Partners should start about an arms length away from each other.2. Partners will start face to face with the ball up and in the double threat position.3. On the whistle, athletes will then use their off hand to try and hit the elbow of their partner’s arm holding the ball.4. One point is gained per time a ball is knocked out of your opponent’s hand.

COACHING NOTES• Let advanced athletes go into deeper water to practice eggbeater while keeping the ball in hand. • Create a team-wide competition, when the ball is hit out of an athlete’s hand they are out and the winning partner must find a winner from another group, repeat this until there is just one winning player left. • Have partner teams, 2v2 instead of 1v1.

GAME: Dribble/Handoff 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Dribbling, Kicking with Ball

Water polo balls, whistle; Lines in the pool; 10 minutes. xx

1. Start by separating athletes into groups of 3, with 1 ball per group. Groups will line up with two people on one end (with the ball) and the 3rd group member on the opposite end.2. On the whistle one of the two athletes dribbles the ball to the other side and gives the ball to their teammate. They then do the same back to the other side. 3. Have groups repeat this until time is up. Signal the end of this exercise with another whistle.

• Athletes having trouble dribbling, can put two hands on the ball and flutter kick, horizontal egg-beater, or horizontal breast-kick• Create a competition to see which group can do the most laps in the alotted time.

GAME: Shooting on the Move 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Pick-up, Power Shooting, Double Threat Position

Water polo balls, Goals,Caps; 1-2 goals; 15 minutes.

1. Start by separating athletes evenly between the goals. Assign goalies if there are no volunteers (will rotate).2. Have athletes set up 3 lines in front of the goal at roughly 3-5 meters, 1 at each goal post and 1 in the middle of the goal.3. One by one, athletes will dribble with their ball (+/- 6 strokes), pick up the ball from underneath (hand transfer), transition to the vertical position and place the ball in a double threat position, rise up and shoot it on the cage.

GAME: 3 Shot Advance 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Power shooting, Changing Direction, Hand 2 Hand

Water polo balls, Cones, Goals, Caps; 1 line in front of goal; 14 minutes.

1. Start by having players line up in the middle of the goal at 6m with a goalie (will rotate) in the cage. 2. A pass will come from their strongside. 3. They catch and shoot the ball. 4. They will then sidekick 45* degrees away from the ball (toward position 1), regain their legs/positioning and receive another pass for a shot.5. They will do this a second time finishing the sequence of three.

GAME: Dribble-Slam 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Double Thret Position, Ball Pick-up

Water polo balls, Whistle; Laps of 25; 5-10 minutes.

1. Start by separating players into two equal groups to provide better spacing. Each athlete should have a ball. 2. On the whistle, group one dribbles 6 strokes, stops, picks up the ball and transitions into a vertical double threat position, builds on their legs and slams the ball down on the water. 3. Whistle again and group two will join. 4. Reset everyone and repeat.

GAME: Pairs 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Hand to hand passing,

Splashball balls, Goals, Caps; 4 groups in front of each goal; 15 minutes. 1. Start by having players get a partner, then assign groups and a goalie to the different goals with no more than 4 groups per goal. There should be 1 ball at each cage. 2. Ball starts with the goalie. They throw the ball up in the air and whoever receives it, their team begins with the ball. 3. Players defend other players like in basketball (no contact). They should wait to hit the elbow of the passer as they pass. 4. Each pair should be trying to either score or steal the ball off a pass. The only way to score is off a pass.

GAME: Sitting on the Dock of the Bay 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Eggbeater

No equiptment necessary; Line up on edge of pool deck; 7-8 minutes.

1. Start by having athletes spread out an arms length away from each other, sitting on the edge of the pool.2. Have athletes practice eggbeater by focusing on one leg at a time, progress into using both legs.3. A coach should be positioned in the middle of the group so that athletes can see their legs/feet as they demonstrate.

GAME: Kicking Back 1 - 2 3 - 4 5 - 6 7 - 8 Eggbeater

No equiptment necessary; Line up on edge of pool, in water; 8 minutes.

1. Start by having athletes get in the water, put their back on the wall and rest their arms/elbows on the deck above them. 2. Have athlets practice eggbeater with the same leg progression as “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.” Starting by focusing on one leg at a time and progressively going to both legs and establishing a good rhythm.
