U.S. national Team ExperienceUCLAwomen’swaterpoloplayershavebeenwellrepresentedontheUSAJuniorandSeniorNationalTeams.Bothteamshavehadrecentsuccessininternationalcompetition.Mostrecently,currentUCLA freshmen Emily Greenwood, Brooke Martin, NatashaSchulmanandLarissaTodiscoplayed for the2009USAJuniorNationalTeam.

Inthesummerof2007,formerUCLAattackerTanyaGandyandTeam USA finished fourth at the FINA Women’s Junior WorldChampionshipsinPorto,Portugal.Gandyscored19goalsinsevengames.

The Senior National Team won the Holiday Cup in December2006. Former Bruins Natalie Golda and Jamie Hipp and then-currentBruinEmilyFehercompetedintheSeniorNationalTeamevent.NatalieGoldascored ineveryoneofsixgames forTeamUSA,whileJamieHippcontributed21saves.TeamUSAhadalsowonthe2006FINAWorldChampionshipsinItaly.

At the 2006 Pythia Cup in Greece, Gandy and current BruingoalkeeperBrittanyFullencompetedfortheU.S.JuniorNationalTeam.GandyregisteredeightgoalsandFullen totaled14savesin the cage over three games, leading Team USA to the silvermedal.

InDecember2001,theU.S.JuniorNationalTeamcapturedthenation’s first ever FINA Junior World Championship in a 10-9overtimewin.AmberStachowskiledtheUnitedStateswithfourgoalsandThaliaMunroaddedonegoal.TheBruinsturnedingreatperformancesattheJuniorWorldChampionships.UCLAplayersaccountedfor48percentofU.S.scoringwith38ofTeamUSA’s80goals. In the2003FINAJuniorWorldChampionships,EmilyFeher, Lauren Heineck, Kristina Kunkel and Kelly Rulon all sawsignificantplayingtimefortheUnitedStates.In2004,theJuniorNationalTeamwonthegoldmedalatthePan-AmericanGames.

UCLAplayershavebeenkeymembersoftheSeniorNationalTeamin previous years. Each player has contributed to Team USA’sinternational success.At the2003FINAWorldChampionships,RobinBeauregardscoredthegame-winninggoalinTeamUSA’s8-6victoryoverItalyinthetitlegame.ThevictoryoverItalygavetheU.S.women’swaterpoloteamitsfirstever-goldmedal.

Following theFINAWorldChampionships,TeamUSAheaded tothePanAmericanGames inhopesofearninganOlympicBerth.TheSeniorNationalteamwentontocompeteinthe2004AthensOlympics,placingthird.

UcLA at the Summer olympicsUnder the tutelage of former UCLA men’s and women’s headwaterpolocoachGuyBaker, theU.S.women’swaterpolo teamearnedasilvermedalatthe2008OlympicGamesinBeijing.AidedbyformerUCLAstandoutsNatalieGoldaandJaimeHipp,theU.S.teamearned its thirdmedal since thesport’sOlympic inceptionin2000.

InthegoldmedalmatchagainstHungary,TeamUSAralliedfromanearly4-0deficit to tie thematch,5-5,beforehalftime.Goldascored one goal in the match, helping reduce the Americans’deficit to5-3.TheU.S. teamadvancedto thegoldmedalmatchaftersinkingAustralia,9-8,toassureitselfoffinishingtheOlympicswithamedal.

TheU.S.teamwonatiebreakeragainstItalytowinGroupA(bothteamsfinishedwith2-0-1preliminaryrecords).IntheU.S.team’sfinal preliminary-round contest, Golda scored a game-high threegoalstoleadtheAmericanspastRussia,12-7.

The 2008 Games in Beijing marked the second OlympicappearanceforGoldaandthefirstforHipp.BakerhasservedastheU.S.women’steam’sheadcoachinallthreeOlympics.

In2004,sevenplayersandBakerrepresentedtheUCLAwomen’swaterpoloprogramattheOlympicsinAthens,Greece.SixformerandcurrentBruinshelped leadTeamUSAtothebronzemedal,and one former Bruin (Kelly Heuchan) competed for Australia,whichfinishedfourth.

Then-current Bruins Natalie Golda, Thalia Munro, AmberStachowski, Kelly Rulon and Gabrielle Domanic (alternate)competedalongsidePayneandBeauregard.BakerhelpedleadtheU.S.teamtoitssecondmedalinasmanyOlympics.

In the 2004 bronze medal contest, the U.S. team defeatedhostAustraliabya6-5margin.UCLA’sathletesscoredthreeofTeam USA’s six goals in that contest – Beauregard, Golda and Stachowskieachnettedonegoal.

Similar to2008, the2004U.S. teamwona tiebreaker againstRussiatowinitspreliminarygroupandpunchaticketdirectlytothesemifinals.TheAmericansdroppeda6-5decisiontoItalyinasemifinalmatchbeforewinningthebronzemedalmatch.

Team USA captured a narrow 7-6 win over Hungary in bothteams’ first match of the 2004 Olympics, as Rulon scored thegame-winninggoal.Rulon finishedthatgamewith twogoalsandGoldascoredonegoal.Ina6-5losstoCanadaduringpreliminaryround play, Team USA received one goal each from Rulon andBeauregard. In theAmericans’ finalpreliminary-roundmatch,an8-4winoverRussia,BeauregardscoredtwogoalsandRulonandStachowskieachaddedone.

Overall in the2004Olympics,UCLA ranked among the nation’smost successful universities. UCLA finished No. 1 among alluniversities in the number of different medalists (19) and thenumberoftotalOlympians(56).CurrentandformerBruinsearnedatotalof19medals,includingeightgoldmedals.UCLA’sathletesalsoclaimedthreesilverandeightbronzemedals.

The new millennium brought women’s water polo to the 2000OlympicGamesinSydney,Australia.Nearly17,000fanswatchedthe gold medal match between the United States and hostAustraliainSydney.

InitsfirstyearasanOlympicsport,women’swaterpoloincludedsixcountriesthateachroundeduptheirtop11playerstocompete.In awild goldmedal contest betweenAustralia and TeamUSA,Australiascoredacontroversiallast-secondgoaltowin,4-3,andsendtheU.S.teamhomewiththesilvermedal.

In2000, then-currentBruinsCoralieSimmonsandBeauregard,former Bruin standout Nicolle Payne and Coach Baker helpedleadTeamUSAonitsquestforagoldmedal.WhilecompetingatUCLA,bothSimmonsandBeauregardspenttheyearawayfromUCLA.SimmonsledTeamUSAwithninegoalsintheOlympics,andBeauregardfinishedthetournamentwithsixgoals.

UCLAwasthemostrepresenteduniversityinthe2000Olympics.In all, 58 Olympians from UCLA (current and former Bruins)competedfortheUnitedStatesandsixforeigncountries.Student-athletes from UCLA finished the summer with 18 medals – eight gold,fivesilver,andfivebronze.

UCLA’s 2005 squad enjoyed what was considered by many at the time to be the greatest season in collegiatewomen’swaterpolohistory.LedbyCutinoAwardwinnerNatalieGolda,theBruinspostedaperfect33-0marktowintheNCAAChampionship.UCLA’s33-0recordmarkedthebestNCAAfinishandlongestsingle-seasonwinningstreak.Theteamoutscoreditsopponents394-134,and121-31inthefirstquarter.FewteamsheldtheirgroundagainstUCLA in the first quarter, much less the entire game.
