Kansas City is still seeking to secure its fi rst halftime lead of the Todd Haley era. The last time the Chiefs were ahead after two quarters was when the club held a 14-3 edge vs. San Diego (12/14/08). Finishing contests in the second half is critical for Kansas City. While the Chiefs have scored 24 second-half points, they have allowed 48 points in the fi nal two quarters. Only Cleveland (55) and Detroit (51) have permitted more points in the second half and only Buffalo (38) has allowed more points in the fourth quarter than Kansas City (35). Despite New York’s 3-0 record, two of those victories have come by seven points or less. The Giants fi rst two wins came by a combined eight points. While the Giants own a substantial scoring edge over their opponents in the fi rst half, New York has only outscored its opponents by a fi ve-point margin (29 scored/24 allowed) in the second half. Chiefs-Giants Rushing Stats New York led the NFL in rushing in 2008, averaging 157.4 ypg. Not surprisingly, the Giants (32:56) ranked second in the league in time of possession behind only Pittsburgh (33:10). If the Giants get a lead, their formula for success isn’t diffi cult to decipher. New York is 34-2 (.944) under Tom Coughlin when it rushes the ball 30 times or more. Those only two losses were at Minnesota (12/28/08) and at Tennessee (11/26/06). KC would also like to run the ball effectively and stop the run. Dating back to 2003, the Chiefs are 21-6 (.778) at Arrowhead when rushing the ball 30 or more times. The Chiefs are 22-8 (.733) when RB Larry Johnson registers a 100-yard game, including a 15-2 (.882) mark at Arrowhead. The last time the Chiefs and Giants met, it was a rushing grudge match as both teams rushed the ball 34 times for a combined 411 yards (KC 188, NYG 223). Johnson had 31 carries for 167 yards with two TDs, while RB Tiki Barber had 29 carries for a franchise single-game record 220 yards with two TDs. While Barber has retired, the Giants are 7-1 when RB Brandon Jacobs registers a 100-yard rushing game in the regular season. The Giants ran the ball 49 times for 226 yards at Tampa Bay (9/27). It may be more diffi cult for both squads to accumulate those type of rushing stats this time around. Excluding kneeldowns, the Giants defense forced 56 negative rushing plays in 2008, ranking second in the NFL behind Chicago (67). Meanwhile, only Baltimore (40.1) allowed opponents fewer rushes and completions per game than New York (42.6) in 2008. In their past two games, the Chiefs have permitted a total of 52 carries for 160 yards, an average of just 80.0 rushing ypg. Chiefs-Giants Turnover Stats The Chiefs are 46-6 (.885) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway differential dating back to ’95. Meanwhile, the Giants are 31-6 (.838) with a positive turnover ratio under Tom Coughlin, including a 16-4 (.800) mark on the road. Over that same span, New York is 7-19 (.269) with a negative turnover ratio, including a 5-6 (.455) mark on the road. Clearly, the turnover table will have huge implications in Sunday’s contest. The Giants currently rank third in the league with a +5 turnover differential (7 takes/2 gives), while the Chiefs are tied for 16th at -1 (2 takes/3 gives). New York leads the league with 38 points off takeaways and has had a league-high 47.5 percent of its points (38 of 80) set up by opponents’ miscues. In 2008, KC (29) forced seven more takeaways than New York (22). But New York (13 gives) tied with Miami for the league best total in ball security. The Giants lost a league-low three fumbles in 2008, while only three clubs threw fewer INTs than New York (10). Only Miami (29) and Tennessee (36) relinquished fewer points off giveaways than New York (39). Chiefs-Giants Passing Stats Chiefs QB Matt Cassel owns a 4-1 record when he compiles a 100.0 rating or higher (min. 20 atts.). He will face a Giants squad that is 1-15 (.063) under Tom Coughlin when an opposing QB compiles a 100.0+ rating (min. 20 attempts), including a streak of nine consecutive losses. Giants QB Eli Manning has started 74 consecutive games, the NFL’s third-longest active streak behind Brett Favre (272) and Peyton Manning (179). New York’s signal caller owns a 45-29 (.608) regular season record in those contests. He is 10-2 (.833) when throwing two or more TDs, including a streak of seven straight wins in such contests. Manning has won fi ve consecutive starts with a 100.0 rating or better (min. 20 atts.), including his last two contests. In a 33-31 victory at Dallas (9/20), he posted a 110.6 rating and he boasted a 106.4 rating in a 24-0 win at Tampa Bay (9/27). KC owns a 33-4 (.891) record at home dating back to ’95 when forcing two or more INTs. Manning suffered only two such games in 2008, but is 2-4 in his last six games when he’s been picked off more than once. Final Chiefs-Giants Statistical Tidbits The Chiefs defense ranks 10th in the NFL, forcing opponents to go three and out 25.4 percent of the time (10 times on 34 drives). NYG ranks second in that category at 34.4% (11 times on 32 drives) ... KC’s offense is tied for sixth in the NFL with a 66.7 Red Zone TD percentage. NYG’s defense is 29th in the NFL with a 75.0 Red Zone TD percentage. Chiefs S Jon McGraw has 99 career special teams tackles, blocked a punt for a TD at BAL (9/13) and ran for a fi rst down on a fake punt at PHI (9/27).

The Interconference Edge at Arrowhead Since the start of the ’95 season, the Chiefs own a 21-7 (.750) record against NFC foes at Arrowhead, the fourth-best home interconference record in the NFL over that span. KC rattled off 12 straight home wins vs. NFC foes beginning with a 20-17 OT victory vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/10/95), a streak that was snapped with a 13-3 loss vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/23/01). The Giants are 12-9 (.571) vs. AFC opponents under Tom Coughlin, including a 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII vs. New England (2/3/08). Last season, New York was 3-1 against AFC foes, including wins against the two clubs who reached the AFC Championship Game. New York claimed a 21-14 win at Pittsburgh (10/26/08) and won 30-10 vs. Baltimore (11/16/08).

A Snapshot of Two of the NFL’s Top Offenses in 2008 As offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, current Chiefs head coach Todd Haley presided over an offense that tied with the Giants for third in the NFL in scoring at 26.7 ppg. Only New Orleans (28.9) and San Diego (27.4) scored more points last season. The Giants scored on 43.8 percent of their drives last season to rank second in the NFL behind New England (44.8%). In terms of touchdown effi ciency, Haley’s offense in Arizona ranked fourth in the NFL, scoring TDs on 25.1% of drives (45 of 179), while New York ranked eighth at 23.6% (42 of 178). No team had more offensive Red Zone possessions than the Giants (69) in 2008. Haley’s Arizona unit was tied for third with 65. A Fast Start and Strong Finish Are Important vs. New York Dating back to 2007, the Giants are 16-2 (.889) when scoring fi rst, including a streak of 11 consecutive wins. New York’s last loss in such a circumstance was a 38-35 loss vs. New England (12/29/07). The Giants are 35-9 (.795) under Tom Coughlin when leading at halftime, including 13 straight wins. New York hasn’t lost when leading at the half since holding a 21-16 halftime advantage in the aforementioned contest vs. the Patriots. Only Philadelphia (+34) and Baltimore (+28) have outscored their opponents by a bigger margin in the fi rst half this season than New York (+27), which has scored 51 points and allowed 24 in the fi rst half. In 2008, only Atlanta (+95) and Philadelphia (+82) outscored their opponents by a bigger margin in the fi rst half than New York (+69).

The Chiefs fell to the N.Y. Giants by a 27-17 count at Giants Stadium. The contest featured a head-to-head rushing duel as RB Tiki Barber set a Giants single-game rushing record with 220 yards and had a pair of rushing scores while Chiefs RB Larry Johnson managed 167 yards and two TDs in a losing effort. The game began as a defensive struggle with a scoreless first quarter. The Chiefs defense forced a QB Eli Manning fumble, allowing Kansas City to crack the scoreboard first with an 18-play drive that took 8:10 off the clock. The Chiefs settled for a K Lawrence Tynes 19-yard field goal after the Giants stuffed three Kansas City rushing attempts from inside the three-yard line. The lead did not last long as Barber and the Giants bounced back. The Pro Bowl runner touched the ball five times on an eight-play drive, including an impressive 41-yard TD run. Barber broke several would-be tackles on his way to reaching the end zone and a 7-3 lead. New York would add a 41-yard field goal in the waning moments of the first half for a 10-3 lead at intermission. Trailing 10-3 at halftime, Kansas City quickly tied the score at 10-10 on the opening possession of the second half. On the first play from scrimmage QB Trent Green found WR Samie Parker open over the middle for a 18-yard gain and then went back to his second-year receiver on the next snap, this time drawing an illegal contact penalty. Johnson capped the drive with four straight carries, including a 14-yard TD trot around the right end to knot the score. Kansas City’s defense thwarted a New York scoring drive on the next possession as CB Dexter McCleon picked off Manning. However, the Chiefs could not convert the takeaway into points, placing the ball back in Barber’s hands. As he did all evening, he dented the Chiefs run defense, this time with a 55-yard carry to set up K Jay Feely’s second field goal of the game. Minutes later Manning found WR Amani Toomer for a 31-yard TD strike. The score gave the Giants a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs offense would respond as a defensive pass interference penalty moved the ball down to the Giants one-yard line. Johnson finished the drive with a one-yard dive to cut the N.Y. Giants lead to 20-17 with 8:29 remaining. Once again, Barber had an answer, this time putting a final dagger into the Chiefs with a 20-yard TD run to push the Giants advantage back to 27-17 with 2:48 left to play. Kansas City’s final drive was halted when WR Eddie Kennison was stripped of the ball while trying to gain extra yardage, giving the ball back to the Giants who were able to run out the clock.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs defense allowed an individual 100-yard rusher for the first time in 20 games, a mark which had stood as the longest active streak in the NFL.• RB Larry Johnson registered his seventh straight 100-yard rushing game, extending the longest streak in Chiefs history. It was also his ninth career game with two or more rushing TDs.• WR Dante Hall topped the 2,000-yard mark in combined net yards for the fourth consecutive year, joining St. Louis RB Marshall Faulk (’98-01) as the only other player in NFL history to reach that 2,000-yard plateau in four straight seasons. RB Larry Johnson rushed for 167 yards and two TDs.

THE LAST GAMEEaglesEagles 34, 34, ChiefsChiefs 1144

September 27, 2009 • Lincoln Financial Field • 69,144

On a day when most headlines were focused on the return of Philadelphia QB Michael Vick to the NFL, it was Eagles QB Kevin Kolb and WR DeSean Jackson who provided the highlights in a dominating offensive performance as Philadelphia topped the Chiefs by a 34-14 margin at Lincoln Financial Field. Kansas City was dominated statistically as the Eagles led in total yards (420 to 196). Kansas City was unable to convert any of its 11 third down opportunities, while committing 10 penalties for 90 yards. Rookie RB LeSean McCoy gave the Eagles an early 7-0 lead with 6:08 left in the first quarter on Philadelphia’s second possession of the game. McCoy took a direct snap from the backfield for a five-yard TD to cap an eight-play, 48-yard drive that took 3:10 off the clock. Kolb, filling in for injured QB Donovan McNabb, led the Eagles 73 yards down the field on their next drive hitting Jackson for 43 yards to the Kansas City 20-yard line. Kolb then connected with TE Brent Celek for eight yards to the one-yard line. After DT Ron Edwards stuffed McCoy for no gain, Kolb dove into the end zone on a sneak to push the Philadelphia lead to 14-0 with 1:21 left in the first quarter. Then the Chiefs defense made its first big play of the afternoon. With Philadelphia facing a fourth-and-one situation from the Kansas City 44-yard line, Kolb’s pass was batted down at the line by LB Mike Vrabel, giving the offense the ball and new hope. On second and 17, QB Matt Cassel hit WR Mark Bradley on a lateral and Bradley then threw to RB Jamaal Charles for a 26-yard gain to the Philadelphia 26-yard line. Three plays later, Cassel found Bradley in the end zone for a 13-yard TD, cutting the Eagles lead to 14-7 with 8:34 left in the half. Philadelphia wasted no time in regaining the momentum and a 14-point margin as Jackson hauled in a 64-yard pass from Kolb on Philadelphia’s next offensive snap, putting the lead back to 21-7 in favor of the Eagles. With 6:15 left in the half, Philadelphia started driving down the field and managed to make the Kansas City 11-yard line before being forced to settle for a 29-yard K David Akers FG. Akers’ kick gave the Eagles a 24-7 lead going into the locker room at half. After a three and out by the Chiefs to open the second half, Philadelphia took the ball on its first drive and moved to the Kansas City 20-yard line. After overthrowing Jackson in the end zone, Kolb and the Eagles offense settled for a 38-yard Akers FG with 9:15 left in the third quarter to make the score 27-7. On KC’s next possession the Chiefs faced a fourth and two, Colquitt and the Chiefs lined up for a punt. But Kansas City snapped the ball to S Jon McGraw who picked up four yards on the fake punt, keeping the Kansas City drive alive. Two plays later, a RB Larry Johnson fumble recovered by Philadelphia ended the threat. Both teams traded punts to open the game’s final stanza. Kolb then hit Celek for 15 yards on Philadelphia’s next drive, followed by a pass to Celek two plays later for a 35-yard TD that extended the Eagles lead to 34-7 with 6:43 left to go in the game. QB Jeff Garcia entered the game and fumbled a snap, which was recovered by McGraw at the Philadelphia 20-yard line, giving the Chiefs offense another scoring opportunity. Cassel converted a fourth and seven with an eight-yard pass to WR Terrance Copper. On the next play, Cassel found WR Bobby Wade for a nine-yard TD, his second TD pass of the day. Philadelphia was able to run out the clock after Kansas City did not recover a last-minute onside kick, sealing the 34-14 victory.
