LAST TIME OUTMonmouth won its school record 10th consecutive game at Rider, overcoming a three-point defi cit in the fi nal 90 seconds to win on the road, 74-69. Justin Robinson fi nished with 25 points, and Chris Brady notched his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

PLAYER OF THE WEEKMonmouth senior guard Justin Robinson earned MAAC Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after averaging 26.5 points per game in wins over Marist and Saint Peter’s. He set the DI scoring record at Marist and put in 26 of his 29 points after the half vs. the Peacocks to pick up his second MAAC honor in three weeks. Je’lon Hornbeak is the only other Hawk to be named MAAC Player of the Week this season, doing so in December.

NATIONWIDE WIN STREAKSAs of Wednesday, Monmouth held the nation’s sixth longest winning streak at 10 in a row. Among the teams ahead of Monmouth include the top-ranked team in the nation, Gonzaga, who is undefeated at 24-0, as well as New Mexico State (W20), Cincinnati (W14), Belmont and Vermont (W13).

BRADY AND HORNBEAK PITCHING INMU got strong contributions from both Chris Brady and Je’lon Hornbeak in the win at Rider, with Hornbeak going for 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, his third game in a row in double fi gures. Brady notched his fourth career double-double and third this season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 boards to go with three blocked shots.

RE-SETTING THE PROGRAM WINNING STREAKMonmouth has won 10 in a row and set the program’s longest winning streak vs. Rider. Earlier this season, between 11/22 and 12/20, Monmouth won nine in a row, which stood as the longest win streak in school history from 12/20 to 2/6, a span of 47 days.

TWO IN A ROW OF 20 FOR THE FIRST TIMEMonmouth has now recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for the fi rst time in the program’s Division I history. MU won 28 games last season and got win #20 over Rider on Monday.

THREE-POINT DEFENSEOver the last fi ve games, Monmouth has lowered its season low defensively for an opponent’s three-point percentage, holding both Fairfi eld, Quinnipiac and Rider to under 20% from deep and Marist at 25%. Monmouth has now kept teams in the last fi ve to 25-118 from beyond the arc, a 21.2% shooting percentage.

OVERTIME WINNERSAfter dropping its previous two overtime games by one possession this season, falling at the buzzer to South Carolina and losing by three on New Year’s Eve against Rider, Monmouth picked up an overtime win over Saint Peter’s. It was the Hawks’ fi rst OT win of the season.

ROBINSON SETS THE SCORING RECORDJustin Robinson pulled up and drilled a three at 13:39 of the second half at Marist to put him in fi rst place on Monmouth’s all-time Division I scoring list. The triple put him at 1,751 points to pass both John Giraldo and Alex Blackwell at 1,749, and he fi nished the contest with 1,762 points. He currently is second on the all-time scoring list (all divisions) with 1,791 points. Kornegay holds the all-time marker with 2,526 career points from 1966-69.

RICE APPROACHING 100The win over Iona was King Rice’s 90th career win, and vaulted him to 90-90 for his career in his sixth season at Monmouth. He is now 99-90 as a Hawk, one wins from 100. He is looking to become the fi fth Monmouth coach to reach 100 career victories.

THE MOST STARTSIn addition to the scoring record, Justin Robinson made 118th career start vs. Saint Peter’s, passing James Hett for the most games started in school history. Robinson has started every game since opening night at West Virginia in 2014 as a sophomore.

MATCHING LAST SEASONMonmouth has an identical overall and conference record as they did through 25 games last year at 20-5 overall and 12-2 in conference.

SEABORN GETTING TO DOUBLESMicah Seaborn has reached double fi gures in all but four games this season. He has reached 20+ points seven times, and has three 25-point contests this year.

DIFFERENT TOP SCORERSOver the course of Monmouth’s 10-game winning streak, the Hawks have had four different players lead them in scoring in a game. Justin Robinson has topped the scoring seven times, while Chris Brady led at Canisius, Micah Seaborn was the high-scorer vs. Iona and Austin Tilghman’s 21 led the way vs. Marist.

ROAD TO THE TITLEThroughout this season, a series of episodes entitled “Road to the Title” will be released, including an in-side look at the team and it’s players, their journies to Monmouth and more. All episodes can be found on MonmouthHawks.com/MBasketball, or by visiting YouTube.com/MonmouthHawks. To this point, features include a season preview, a look inside gameday on opening night, the intriguing stories of a pair of big men, and the relationship between Micah Seaborn and Je’lon Hornbeak that started in their youth in Texas.

FOUL SHOOTINGMonmouth shot and made a season-high from the foul line against Manhattan, netting 33-of-44 with Micah Seaborn going a perfect 10-10.

BEST THREE-YEAR STRETCHThe most wins in three seasons in program history was set with the win over Iona, with the Hawks winning their 57th game. As of today, the Hawks are 66-28 in the last two plus seasons. The previous best run came under Wayne Szoke between 1989-90 and 1991-92, when the Hawks were 56-31 in three years.

THE BEST STARTMonmouth set a program record with its 10th win in 12 games against Princeton, breaking the 1990-91 team’s mark of 9-2 to open a season.

SIX WITH 20+Monmouth is one of three teams in the nation with six players to individually score 20 points in a single game this season. Memphis and UMass have had six players do it, which MU accomplished when Austin Tilghman scored 21 against Marist. Justin Robinson, Je’lon Hornbeak, Micah Seaborn, Chris Brady and Collin Stewart have all hit 20 in a game this year.

WINNING BY 20+The 42-point victory over Fairfi eld is the eighth time King Rice has posted a 20+ point victory in his career, and the fi rst time during the 2016-17 season. The last such win was a 26-point win at Marist last January.

LARGEST DIVISION I WIN EVERMonmouth’s 42-point win over Fairfi eld was the largest margin of victory the Hawks have ever had over a DI opponent. It marks the largest win of King Rice’s career and MU’s largest win over a MAAC opponent, and is the fi rst time Rice posted a 30+ point win as Monmouth’s head coach.

STIFLING DEFENSEThe 49 points allowed to Fairfi eld is the lowest output for a Monmouth opponent this season, and the fourth time a Monmouth team allowed under 50 points under King Rice. MU allowed 24 fi rst-half points and 25 in the second, both season lows, as well as setting season-lows for opponent fi eld goals made, fi eld goal percentage and three-point percentage. The Stags were the fi rst team MU held to under 30% shooting this season. MU also forced a season-high 23 turnovers, the most since causing UCLA to turn it over 23 times .

UP NEXT...MU takes on Siena at the Times Union Center on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3.

82016 17 monmouth basketball game notes-

King Rice enters his sixth season on the Monmouth sideline, and completed his most successful season-to-date in 2015-16, leading the Hawks to a program best 28 wins and a top seed in the Na onal Invita on Tournament, as well as wins over fi ve high-major programs. He coached the Hawks to the MAAC regular season tle with a 17-3 league mark, collec ng MAAC Coach of the Year honors in addi on to being named John McLendon Na onal Coach of the Year. Rice picked up ECAC and NABC District I Coach of the Year accolades as well, while being named a fi nalist for the Ben Jobe Award.

Rice posted 17 league victories, including an 11-2 mark at home and a na on-leading 13 road tallies and 17 wins away from home, including neutral site wins. He secured Monmouth’s fi rst regular season tle in 11 years and the top seed in the conference tournament while knocking off the program’s fi rst-ever ranked opponent in No. 17 Notre Dame on Thanksgiving night as well as wins at UCLA, Georgetown and Rutgers

and a neutral site victory over Southern California. The Blue and White also notched its fi rst na onal postseason win since 2006 and the fi rst ever at home, topping Bucknell in the opening round of the NIT.

In his fi h season in West Long Branch, Rice mentored MAAC Player of the Year Jus n Robinson and league Rookie of the Year Micah Seaborn, both of whom were all-conference selec ons along with senior Deon Jones. Robinson earned mul ple na onal awards while se ng the single-season scoring record under Rice’s tutelage. Following the 2015-16 campaign, Rice was rewarded with a contract extension, which extended his contract to 2020-21.

Rice, who was named a fi nalist for the 2015 Ben Jobe Na onal Coach of the Year Award, led the Hawks to an 18-15 overall record in 2014-15 and a 13-7 mark in Metro Atlan c Athle c Conference ac on, which resulted in the No. 4 seed in the league postseason. The Hawks, who advanced to the conference semifi nals in just their second season in the league, put a pair of guards on all-conference teams and held 26 of their opponents to 70 points or less.

In 2014-15, the Hawks placed guard Jus n Robinson on the All-MAAC First Team and the NABC All-District Second Team and guard Deon Jones on the All-MAAC Third Team, while senior guard Andrew Nicholas was honored as the league’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Rice, whose roster featured nine fi rst-year players and no seniors in 2013-14, guided the Hawks into their fi rst season in the MAAC, where the Blue & White claimed the No. 9 seed in the league’s postseason. In his fi rst two seasons in the league, Monmouth outperformed its preseason coaches poll prognos ca on, as the Hawks were selected sixth prior to 2014-15 and fi nished the regular season in a e for third place, with eventual tournament champion Manha an.

In 2013-14, paced by one of the highest scoring duos in program history in Jones and Nicholas, the Hawks posted an 11-21 overall record, which included the championship trophy in the regional pod of the Barclays Center Classic, and the team’s highest scoring average in 13 years.

The Hawks started the 2012-13 campaign with a 5-3 record before fi nishing their fi nal season in the Northeast Conference with an overall mark of 10-21 and 5-13 in league play. Monmouth, which ranked near the top of the league in steals and turnover margin, capped its season with forward Ed Waite scoring his 1,000th career point and guard Jesse Steele wri ng his name all over the record books in just two and a half seasons.

In his fi rst season with the Blue and White, Rice made an immediate impact on the program, leading the Hawks to a fi h place e in the league standings. The Hawks fi nished 12-20 overall, but fi nished the year winners of nine of their last 12 games to claim a 10-8 league mark and grab the No. 6 seed in the conference postseason, while Dion Nesmith became the 17th Monmouth player to earn NEC All-Rookie Team accolades in program history. The Hawks, who played three na onally-ranked teams during the year, and competed in the Dick’s Spor ng Goods NIT Season Tip-Off , ini ated an up-tempo style of play, which then generated the team’s highest scoring average since the 2003-04 campaign.

Rice was named the head men’s basketball coach at Monmouth University on March 30, 2011, and became the fi h head coach in the history of the Monmouth men’s basketball program.

A na ve of Binghamton, N.Y. and a 1992 graduate of North Carolina, Rice had 13 seasons of experience in the collegiate coaching ranks, 10 of which came with current Pi sburgh head coach Kevin Stallings. For the previous fi ve seasons before joining the Hawks, Rice was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt under Stallings, where the Commodores made the NCAA Tournament four of those years out of the Southeastern Conference. A 1987 McDonald’s High School All-American, Rice is married to Summer and the couple has two sons, Alexander and Julian James.PROFESSIONAL COACHING EXPERIENCE2011-Present: Head Coach, Monmouth University (West Long Branch, N.J.)2006-2011: Assistant Coach, Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.)2001-2004: Head Coach, Bahamian National Team1999-2000: Assistant Coach, Providence College (Providence, R.I.)1993-1998: Assistant Coach, Illinois State University (Normal, Ill.)1992-1993: Assistant Coach, University of Oregon (Eugene, Ore.)NCAA POSTSEASON APPEARANCESAs an assistant coach (8):NCAA (Illinois State 1997, 1998, Vanderbilt 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011)NIT (Illinois State 1995, 1996)As a player (4):NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 (North Carolina 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 [Final Four])ACC Tournament Championship Teams (1989, 1991)As a head coach (1):NIT (Monmouth, 2016)

THE HOME OF MONMOUTH BASKETBALLTHE HOME OF MONMOUTH BASKETBALLPrior to this season, the arena formerly known as The MAC was renamed

the OceanFirst Bank Center thanks to a naming rights deal with OceanFirst Bank. MU Basketball enters its eighth season in the building after playing pre-viously in Boylan Gymnasium. Monmouth University ushered in a new era in the school’s history with the completion and opening of the long anticipated arena in the Fall of 2009. It not only serves the school’s 23 Division I Athletics programs, but is also a key asset for the entire University community. The facility features classroom and seminar space and a conference center that can be used for meetings, or be partitioned and used for study hall, clinics or workshops. The gym, which features a state-of-the-art fi tness center, is also the location of the Leon Hess Champions' Hall, Monmouth Athletics Hall of Fame and Varsity Club, which will be used for hospitality for Blue/White Club members. Student lounges and study areas with complete wireless Internet access are also available.

The OceanFirst Bank Center, which is connected to Boylan Gym and the Steadman Natatorium, is 153,200 square feet of space for students and the community to utilize in many different capacities. It’s most prominent fea-ture is the 4,000 seat arena, which is the nest for the Monmouth men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena also features a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, which can be used for training and competition all year long. A fi tness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment is also housed here.

The arena provides varsity athletes & coaches with meeting facilities, locker rooms, practice and competition facilities & expanded and upgraded ame-nities. The University Bookstore was also relocated from the Stafford Stu-dent Center, which will improve accessibility for commuting students, and the additional square footage will enable the stocking of a greater variety of merchandise.

In the summer of 2011, with funds raised through private donations, Mon-mouth’s varsity athletics weight room was given a $200,000 overhaul.

Renovations, which began in June and were funded entirely by the gener-ous donations of Monmouth supporters, included a brand new Mondo fl oor, replaced HVAC system, new lights and a fresh paint job. The aesthetics of the room were improved with MU branded wall decorations.
