THE FIRST LOOKThe Chargers look to snap a five-game skid and secure the third consecutive victory when playing at Merkert Gymnasium on Tuesday night when New Haven travels to North Easton, Mass. for a date with the Stonehill Skyhawks. This game also serves as a homecoming for senior guard Samir McDaniels who will play the final two games in his home state over a period of the next five days.

INSIDE THE SERIES• New Haven and Stonehill meet for the

27th time in the history of the two pro-grams.

• Overall, the Chargers trail the Skyhawks 18-8 in the first 26 meetings, with the series dating back to the second season of basketball at New Haven, 1962-73.

• Under sixth-year head coach Ted Ho-taling, the Chargers are 3-2 against the conference foe.

• Last season, New Haven dropped a 63-53 decision at home. Prior to that, the Chargers scored three straight wins over the NE-10 foe.

A WIN OVER STONEHILL WOULD... • break a five game skid with losses

against Post, East Stroudsburg, Ameri-can International, Merrimack and Bentley.

• be the third consecutive victory for New Haven when meeting Stonehill at Merkert Gym.

• be the fourth win in the last five years against the Skyhawks

• be the 84th triumph under head

coach Ted Hotaling. • be the 780th win in the 55-year his-

tory of Charger men’s basketball. SCOUTING THE CHARGERSNew Haven looks to snap a five-game skid and pick up their first win since the calen-dar rolled over to 2016 when they travel to Northeast Division opponent Stonehill. For the year, redshirt junior guard Jemal Mosley leads the team, scoring in double figures in all nine games he has played, including a career-high 30 points against Merrimack. Overall, Mosley is averaging 19.0 points per game, seventh in the NE-10. He is second on the team with a .500 field goal percentage (59-of-118), includ-ing 28 three points, while averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. Following him in the scoring column is redshirt freshman guard Michael Bourke who had a streak of sev-en straight double figure games snapped against AIC. Included in that run was a season-high for all players of 31 points against Georgian Court. Bourke leads the team lead from beyond the arc with 29 three pointers. Rounding out the leading scorers is sophomore Levy Gillespie who averages 12.0 ppg, including a career-high with 24 points against East Stroudsburg. Senior Joshua Guddemi currently leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 per game after setting a career-high with 11 against Concordia. As a team, New Haven current-ly leads the NE-10 and is 35th in the nation in scoring defense where they are holding opponents to 68.9 points-per-game.

looking for its third victory in four games since the calendar rolled over to 2016. As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 81.1 points per game, fifth best in the NE-10, while they are second in the league in three point field goal percentage, making 40.5 per-cent of their attempts (157-of-388). Individu-ally, the Falcons are led by junior forward Ryan Logan whose 19.2 points per game average is sixth best in the NE-10. He is also second on the team in rebounding, pulling in an average of 8.7 rebounds per game. Fol-lowing Logan in the scoring column is senior guard Carter Smith who averages 15.9 ppg. Senior forward Pierce Cumpstone is third on the team in scoring (12.4 ppg) while leading the Skyhawks and sixth in the NE-10 pulling down an average of 8.9 rebounds per night.

UP NEXTNew Haven continues a two game road swing through the Bay State with a Saturday after-noon match up against Assumption. Tip off between the Chargers and Greyhounds is set for 3:00 p.m. following the women’s team who opens the league doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Both games will take place at Assump-tions Laska Gymnasium. Complete coverage of Charger men’s basketball can be found at www.NewHavenChargers.com.

LAST TIME THEY METThe Chargers dropped a 63-53 decision to Stonehill in the only meeting between the two squads last season. Jemal Mosley scored a team-high 19 points, while Eric Anderson grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Anderson added nine points, four assists and two blocks. Off the bench, Jonny Ocasio scored 10 points, including eight from the free throw line. Cyrus James finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. As a team, the Chargers shot 31 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from long range and 57.9 percent from the charity stripe. Stonehill was led by sophomore forward Ryan Logan who scored a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds. Carter Smith added 12 points and Jack Cole finished with 10 boards.

LAST TIME OUTThe Chargers dropped a 76-50 decision to the visiting Bentley Falcons in their most recent action. Leading New Haven was junior Jemal Mosley who finished with 14 points. Joining Mosley in leading the team was senior Joshua Guddemi who finished with 11 points, while leading the individual shooting efforts, miss-ing just one of his five field goal attempts, including hitting both of his attempts from

beyond the three point arc. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 42 percent on 21-of-50 overall with five of those 21 field goals from beyond the three point arc. The Chargers also finished a perfect 3-of-3 at the free throw line as the two teams combined to finish perfect at the line, a total of 6-for-6.

THE NUMBERS DON’T MATTERIn the first of two meetings against crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University, the Chargers posted arguably the biggest win in school history when they defeated the then ranked No. 2 in the NABC Poll Owls 79-66. The win over SCSU was not the first time New Haven has pulled an upset, it is actually the second-straight year the Chargers have knocked off a ranked opponent. Last season, New Haven defeated East Stroudsburg 79-71 on the road. At the time the Warriors were 15th in the nation. Despite it not being the first win over a ranked opponent, the defeat of SCSU does represent the highest ranked team New Haven has defeated with the Owls No. 2 in the NABC Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.

TWENTY-TWENTY VISIONOver a four game stretch just prior to the calendar rolling over to 2016, redshirt fresh-man Michael Bourke posted 20 or more points including a career-high, and season-high for all players, 31 at Georgian Court. Also included in that streak was 25 points against then ranked No. 2 Southern Connecticut State University. He followed that up with 22 points in the road game at Pace and most recently put up 21 on the road at Post. Overall, Bourke has scored in double figures in eight of his last 10 games and is currently second on the team in scoring with an average of 16.5 points per game. The majority of Bourke’s scoring has come from beyond the three point arc where he leads the team with 29 three pointers among his 50 total field goals.

DOMINATING DEFENSELast season, New Haven finished the year 11th in NCAA Division II in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 62.7 points per game. That marked the second-straight season the Char-gers defense was among the best in the nation as they finished second in Division II following the 2013-14 season, holding the opposition to 62.2 ppg. DOUBLE TROUBLEJunior guard Jemal Mosley has finished all nine games he has played in 2015-16 with double figures in the scoring column and cur-rently leads the team with an average of 19.0 points per game. Among those double figure games is three 20-plus performances, one of which was a career-high 30 points against Merrimack. Mosley has also not finished a game this season without hitting at least one three point field goal, while he has also been very giving with the rock, dishing out at least one assist in all but one game, leading the team with an average of 2.7 giveaways per game.

ON TARGETSenior guard Samir McDaniels has been on target more than half of the time he has hoisted the rock in 2015-16, currently eighth in the Northeast-10 with an average of 56.0 percent from the field. That average is increased to over 64 percent in conference play where he has made 25-of-39 attempts from the floor.

THREE POINT THREATThe Chargers return their top two three point threats from the 2014-15 season with start-ing guards Jemal Mosley and Tommy Hunt. Mosley returns as the leading outside shooter with a career-high 78 three pointers, making 34.8 percent of his attempts (78-224). Hunt finished his rookie campaign at New Haven with 43 three pointers as only six of his 49 total field goals came inside of the three point arc. Overall as a team, New Haven finished the year with 187 three pointers making 32.2 percent of its 581 attempts.

IN THE CROSSHAIRS Just a junior, guard Jemal Mosley already has the Chargers all-time top-10 three point shooters in his crosshairs. With 126 career three pointers, Mosley needs two to knock Darryl Greene (2006-10) from the all-time list. Mosely’s 78 three pointers as a sopho-more ranks fifth all-time in a single season in Charger history. The all-time record for a single season was set in 1991-92 by Mike Grove with 100 made three pointers, while Justin Exum (2010-14) holds the career record with 294 field goals from beyond the 20-foot, 9-inch arc.

PRESEASON PROPSThe UNH men’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Southwest Division of the Northeast-10 Conference in a preseason tally of head coaches as announced by the league. The Chargers finished 2014-15 with a 15-12 record under fifth year head coach Ted Hotaling. Crosstown rival Southern Con-necticut State was picked to finish atop of the Southwest Division after advancing to the NCAA East Region Championship last season. Reigning NE-10 Champion Ameri-can International finished just behind SCSU, while Saint Rose came in third. BIG SHOES TO FILLThe Chargers will have big shoes to fill with the loss of two-time All-American Eric Anderson to graduate. Anderson finished out his senior season as the best rebounder in the nation, averaging 13.1 rebounds per game with the next best at 12.7 per game. In addition to that, Anderson led the Chargers in scor-ing, averaging 16.7 points per game. He also recorded the first triple double in school history which came on 26 points, 28 rebounds and 10 assists in a New Year’s Eve overtime win over NE-10 rival Saint Anselm. Overall for his career, An-derson finished 13th in scoring (1,551 points) and second in rebounds (1,271).

INTERNATIONAL FLAIRThe Chargers roster includes a pair of international student-athletes with se-nior Joshua Guddemi and rookie Jacob Pupavac. Guddemi hails from Notting-ham, England, while Pupavac has the farthest trip from campus, hailing from Geelong, Australia. Through his first three seasons with the Blue and Gold,

Guddemi is averaging 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Pupavac comes to West Haven after averaging 12.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game with the Geelong Supercats.

NON CONFERENCE PROWESSIn six non-Northeast-10 Conference games in 2014-15, New Haven finished with a 5-1 record including a 79-71 victo-ry over the top seed in the NCAA Atlantic region, East Stroudsburg. Overall, three of the Chargers five non-conference wins came over teams that were part of the 2014 NCAA Division II postseason tour-nament; Bloomfield and Saint Anselm.

THE SCHEDULEThe Chargers will play a 26-game slate in 2015-16 with 20 game inside the North-east-10 and six against non-league com-petition. Not included in the regular sea-son schedule is an exhibition match-up against the 2014 NCAA Division I National Champion UConn Huskies on November 7 at the XL Center in downtown Hartford. American International. Four of the six non-conference opponents New Haven is scheduled to meet in 2015-16 are from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Included in that group is Philadelphia University, the reigning CACC cham-pion. Among the 15 Northeast-10 Conference opponents, the Chargers will play six teams in a home-and-home series: Le Moyne, Saint Rose, Adelphi, Southern Connecticut State, Pace and American International. The Chargers will be tested a lot in the first two months of the season as eight of the first 11 games, all in November and December, will be played away from the New Haven campus. On the flip side of the schedule, the Chargers will close out the season with five of their final seven games at Charger Gym, including back-to-back home games against Pace and Le Moyne to close out the regular season.

HEAD COACHSIXTH SEASONALBANY ‘95

TED HOTALING

Ted Hotaling enters his sixth season as head men’s basketball coach at New Haven in 2015-16. The ninth head coach in program history, Hotaling ranks third in program history in winning percentage and

became the fourth winningest coach at New Haven last season. Of the nine head coaches in New Haven men’s basketball history, eight of them have coached at least 100 games for the Chargers. Hotaling’s 55-45 mark through his first 100 contests was the best since 1995.

Hotaling’s 2014-15 Chargers finished the season with a 15-12 overall record, the fourth-straigtht season with a plus-.500 record. Among the highlights is senior Eric Anderson who was named Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year for a third-straight season, the first time in NE-10 history a player has earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades in three-straight years. Anderson was also a repeat member of the NE-10 First Team All-Conference and stands as the only Charger to earn first team honors. In addition to his NE-10 honors, Anderson was named a Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Third Team All-American. Following the season, Anderson signed a contract to play with the Gladiators Trier in Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga ProA League. Statistically, Anderson led NCAA Division II in rebounds per game (13.1) and defensive rebounds per game (9.85). He was also among the top-10 in the nation in double doubles (8th) and total rebounds (5th).

Hotaling’s 2012-13 and 2013-14 teams finished with back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2002-03 and 2003-04, while also earning back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Postseason. Hotaling’s 21-9 record in 2014-15 stands as the most wins in a single season under his leadership, while the Chargers’ 14-6 record in the NE-10 that season was the secon-best since joining the conference in 2008-09.

The 2013-14 squad led the nation in personal fouls per game (13.6), while the Chargers ranked second in Division II in fewest turnovers per game (8.9). New Haven also ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense (6th) and field goal percentage defense (9th). Individually, Hotalin’g mentored Anderson to NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year and All-America Honorable mention recognition - the first such mention for UNH in 24 years. Anderson finished his junior season leading the Northeast-10 Conference and ranked second in Division II in defensive rebounds per game (8.97). He also ranked third in the nation with 20 double-doubles. Anderson was joined by Jeffery Adkins and Justin Exum and two-time All-Northeast-10 honorees.

In 2012-13, Hotaling mentored the Chargers to a 20-9 record – their first 20-win campaign since 2003-04. New Haven reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage since 2003 with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals. That season, Hotaling’s Chargers led the NE-10 and ranked 10th nationally in fewest turnovers committed per game (11.0) and slotted at 13th in the country in scoring defense with an NE-10-leading 61.1 points per game allowed. New Haven also finished second in the conference and 38th in Division II in free throw percentage (74.3).

Individually, Hotaling mentored 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year Eric Anderson, who finished second in the nation with 18 double-doubles while ranking third with 12.0 rebounds per game and ninth in blocked shots at 2.45 per game. Jeffery Adkins and Justin Exum also each claimed All-Northeast-10 honors.

Hotaling led the Chargers to a 15-13 record in 2011-12 - a seven-win improvement from the previous campaign and the club’s first winning season since 2004-05. New Haven also qualified for the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, winning a First Round contest at Pace before falling in a 54-51 heartbreaker at Adelphi in the Quarterfinals.

In his first season as head coach, the Chargers posted an 8-18 overall mark and a 6-16 record in the Northeast-10 Conference. Throughout the season, New Haven ranked among the top three-point shooting teams in Division II. Freshman Justin Exum concluded the season ranked 17th nationally in three-point field goals per game. He was also the highest ranked freshman in that category. As a team, UNH ranked 31st in three-point field goal percentage and 32nd in three-point field goals per game.

With over 15 years of college coaching experience, Hotaling most recently spent five seasons as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky University. While at EKU, the Colonels enjoyed a number of record-setting seasons, including two postseason runs. Hotaling’s main responsibilities at EKU included working with the guards and coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts.

In 2007, the Colonels earned a berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament. EKU was selected to the College Basketball Invitational this season after amassing a 20-11 regular season record. The Colonels were one of the best offensive teams in the country during Hotaling’s tenure as well. In 2010, EKU ranked in the top 10 in three-point field goals made, turnovers per game and assist/turnover ratio. The Colonels also broke the Ohio Valley Conference record for three-pointers made in back-to-back seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10).

Prior to arriving at Eastern Kentucky, Hotaling served four years as a full-time assistant at Yale University from 2001-05. He also served one season as an assistant at UNH in 2000-01. The Niverville, N.Y. native began his coaching career at Adelphi University in 1998 where he spent one season as an assistant.

Hotaling earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University at Albany in 1995 and later earned his master’s degree from Adelphi University. In the fall of 2012, he was inducted into the University at Albany Great Dane Hall of Fame as both an individual student-athlete and as a member of the 1993-94 men’s basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight.

After graduating from Albany he went on to play professionally in Europe for the Cardiff Phoenix Basketball Club in Cardiff, Wales, and the Plymouth Rotolok Raiders in Plymouth, England.
