Chiefs-Ravens Scoring Stats Baltimore has consistently boasted one of the league’s top defenses over the past decade. The Ravens have won 27 consecutive home games when holding opponents to 10 points or less dating back to the 2000 campaign. Baltimore is 37-5 (.881) at home dating back to 2000 when holding foes to 14 points or less. The Ravens are 41-6 (.872) over that same span at home when holding foes to 17 points or less. Dating back to 2000, no team has allowed fewer points at home than Baltimore (15.1 ppg). Baltimore (385 scored/244 allowed) and Tennessee (375 scored/234 allowed) led the NFL in scoring differential at +141 in 2008. Over the past fi ve seasons, the Chiefs are 12-28 (.300) on the road, averaging 28.7 ppg in those 12 victories and just 14.1 ppg in those 28 losses. Kansas City’s most recent road victory in its last 12 road contests was a 20-13 win at Oakland (11/30/08). Over that 12-game span, the Chiefs have averaged just 13.1 ppg while allowing 23.5 ppg. 2008 QB Stats: KC’s Matt Cassel vs. Baltimore’s Joe Flacco During the 2008 campaign, QBs Matt Cassel and Joe Flacco emerged as highly-effective signal callers. While neither QB had made an NFL start prior to last season, both players led their respective clubs to double-digit victory totals a year ago. Cassel started all eight road contests for New England in 2008, compiling a 6-2 record, a +3 TD-to-INT differential, a 65.5 completion percentage and an 88.6 rating. Meanwhile, Flacco compiled an identical 6-2 record in eight home starts as a rookie for Baltimore. Baltimore’s defense led the NFL in 2008, permitting opposing QBs to compile a league-low 60.6 composite passer rating. Cassel owns a 4-1 record as a starter when registering a rating of 100.0 or better. Cassel is also 4-1 in contests where he throws two or more TDs. The Chiefs are 3-0 in their three previous road games vs. the Ravens and haven’t suffered an INT in any of those contests. Dating back to 2000, Baltimore is 46-9 (.836) when the Ravens force at least one INT, including a 6-1 mark in 2008.

The last player to rack up a 100-yard game against the Ravens was Chiefs two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson, who produced 23 carries for 120 yards (5.2 avg.) at Arrowhead (12/10/06). At the time of that game, Baltimore’s defense led the league in total defense (267.1 ypg) and ranked second in rushing defense (75.8 ypg). Baltimore continued its stellar defensive play in 2008, ranking second in the league in total defense (261.1 ypg) and third in rushing defense (81.4 ypg). In fact, only Minnesota (+68.9 ypg) enjoyed a bigger per-game rushing differential in 2008 than Baltimore (+67.1 ypg). The Ravens also own a string of 26 straight home games without allowing an opponent to top the 100-yard rushing plateau. Texans RB Domanick Davis was the last to do it, racking up 29 carries for 155 yards at Baltimore (12/4/05). Chiefs Must Learn to Finish Strong Eight of Kansas City’s games were decided by seven points or less in 2008. The Chiefs went 1-7 in those contests. Kansas City struggled to fi nish contests a year ago, getting outscored by a 98-point margin (121 scored/219 allowed) in the second half of games. Only Detroit (-99), St. Louis (-102) and Cincinnati (-152) had bigger second-half scoring defi cits. Baltimore was 1-2 in games decided by seven points or less a year ago. The Ravens outscored their foes by an average margin of 8.8 ppg (24.1 to 15.3). Baltimore outscored its opponents by an 86-point margin in the second half in 2008 (212 scored/126 allowed). Only San Diego (+94), Tennessee (+92) and Pittsburgh (+87) owned better second-half scoring differentials. The Ravens were especially effective in the fi nal 15 minutes of games, ranking third in the league in 2008 a +55 scoring differential in the fourth quarter (115 scored/60 allowed). Final Statistical Tidbits on the Chiefs-Ravens Match-Up Kansas City’s last road win against an AFC North opponent was a 27-24 victory at Baltimore (10/4/04). Baltimore’s last meeting with an AFC West foe resulted in a 29-10 win vs. Oakland (10/26/08) ... Baltimore (33:10) led the NFL in time of possession in 2008 ... The Ravens defense ranked second in the league in Red Zone TD percentage at 35.9%, allowing just 14 TDs on 39 opponent Red Zone possessions ... The Chiefs led at halftime in both of their wins in 2008, while Baltimore was 9-2 when leading at intermission last season.

Chiefs Rookie Head Coaches on Opening Day Head coach Todd Haley is seeking to become the fi fth fi eld general in Chiefs history to register a victory in his initial regular season contest with the club. Kansas City’s previous 10 coaches have gone 4-6 in their initial regular season game with the franchise. Frank Gansz was the last Chiefs head coach to accomplish the feat with a 20-13 win vs. San Diego (9/13/87). The only member of that group to claim a victory on the road was Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy, who did it at Cincinnati (9/3/78) as the Chiefs set a team single-game record with 69 rushing attempts. Haley was on the victorious side of his fi rst trip to Baltimore as an assistant coach on Bill Parcells’ staff when the N.Y. Jets claimed a 19-16 OT win (11/2/97). In addition, Chiefs GM Scott Pioli served as the Jets Director of Pro Personnel at the time.

Bono is one of fi ve Chiefs QBs to get his initial win with the franchise on Opening Day. The last four Kansas City signal callers to accomplish that feat have done it on the road.

Kansas City registered wins at M&T Bank Stadium in ’99, 2003 and 2004. The only other squad that has faced the Ravens on the road more than once without suffering a loss is New England, which is 2-0 at M&T Bank Stadium. Tampa Bay and Carolina are both 1-0 in their only appearances at Baltimore. The Ravens were 6-2 at home under John Harbaugh in 2008, outscoring opponents by a 180-to-80 margin, or an average score of 22.5 to 10.0. Baltimore is 16-5 (.762) all-time at home in the month of September, including a streak of fi ve straight wins. The Ravens haven’t lost at home in the season’s opening month since suffering a 24-7 setback vs. Indianapolis (9/11/05). The Chiefs registered a 17-10 win at Baltimore (9/18/05), but have lost seven of their last nine September road contests. Kansas City’s last road win in September was a 30-16 victory at San Diego (9/30/07). Avoiding Turnovers is Particularly Important at Baltimore Taking care of the football will be paramount against a Baltimore squad that has won 40 consecutive home games with a positive turnover margin dating to a 40-14 win vs. Tennessee (12/5/99). Since the start of the 2000 campaign, the Ravens own a remarkable 61-2 (.968) regular season record when positive. Over that same span, Baltimore is 8-46 (.148) when it posts a negative turnover mark. The Ravens have lost four straight home games when negative dating back to a 21-7 loss vs. Cincinnati (11/11/07). Kansas City owns the NFL’s best turnover ratio dating back to the ’90 season with a +159 mark (621 takes/462 gives), which is 70 turnovers better than Pittsburgh’s second-place showing of +89 (618 takes/529 gives). The Chiefs were +5 (29 takes/24 gives) in 2008. Kansas City has boasted the league’s best takeaway/giveaway differential fi ve times since ’90, accomplishing the feat in ’90, ’92, ’95, ’99 and 2003. The Chiefs are 3-0 in their previous three visits to M&T Bank Stadium. Kansas City didn’t commit a single turnover in any of those contests, going a combined +7 by forcing six INTs and recovering one fumble. The Ravens were +19 (28 takes/9 gives) in 2008, but were -6 (6 takes/12 gives) in their fi ve losses. Baltimore forced at least one turnover in every game in 2008 except for a 31-3 loss at Indianapolis (10/12/08). Only Green Bay (124) registered more points off takeaways than Baltimore (123) in 2008. Opening Day Success Can Be a Postseason Precursor In the NFL’s 43-year Super Bowl era, 81.4% of eventual NFL champions (35 of 43) won on Opening Day. The Chiefs have made 15 playoff appearances and have won on Opening Day in 12 of those seasons. The only three times Kansas City has made the playoffs after failing to win on Opening Day were in ’71, ’97 and 2006. Eight of the NFL’s 12 playoff teams in 2008 won on Opening Day. Kansas City is seeking its fi rst road win on Opening Day since registering a 40-39 win at Cleveland (9/8/02). Baltimore is 5-8 all-time on Opening Day, but the Ravens have won their last three home openers dating back to 2006.

In a critical AFC showdown in which the Chiefs were facing Baltimore’s number one ranked defense, Kansas City could not afford to turn the ball over and expect to pull out a victory. Three first-half turnovers negated potential Chiefs scoring drives and helped the Ravens escape Arrowhead Stadium with a rare December win by a final score of 20-10. The Chiefs looked like they might strike first when WR Dante Hall returned the opening kickoff out near midfield. Back-to-back third-down conversions to WR Eddie Kennison and Hall moved Kansas City to the 18-yard line, K Lawrence Tynes’ 32-yard field goal try was ruled to have narrowly missed wide left. On the Ravens second possession QB Steve McNair completed four of six passes for 51 yards setting up a 41-yard field goal from K Matt Stover to grab a 3-0 lead. That’s when the Baltimore defense began to dominate. The Ravens harassed Chiefs QB Trent Green repeat-edly, sacking him 5.0 times and forcing him into three turnovers in the first half. Baltimore's first takeaway of the game came when Green was intercepted by S Ed Reed, who returned it to the Chiefs 34-yard line. Stover converted the short field into another FG to open a 6-0 lead in the second quarter. The Chiefs would get a 47-yard run from RB Larry Johnson late in the first half and a personal foul penalty to move the ball to the Baltimore 27. On third-and-eight from the 25-yard line, Green misfired again as Reed picked off the ball on the two-yard line and snuffed out the drive leaving the score 6-0 at the half. The Ravens struck with a back-breaking big play midway through the third quarter. From their own 13-yard line, McNair avoided a sack and heaved a pass to a wide open WR Mark Clayton who raced untouched for an 87-yard touchdown. In what was shaping up as a defensive duel, that big play opened up an imposing 13-0, two-score lead with 6:26 left in the third quarter. The Chiefs offense would answer with their first scoring drive of the afternoon. Johnson ripped off a 15-yard run before Green hit TEs Kris Wilson and Tony Gonzalez for first downs. On third-and-10 from the Ravens 21-yard line, Baltimore sacked Green to force a 49-yard field goal from Tynes to cut the lead to 13-3 late in the third quarter. That however, was as close as the Chiefs would get. Baltimore then pounded out a crushing 16-play drive that ate 9:00 off the clock and resulted in a RB Jamal Lewis one-yard TD run. Kansas City’s defense simply couldn’t get off the field as the Ravens ran the ball 12 times on the possession, converting five third downs. The resulting 20-3 lead would clinch the Ravens win. Kansas City would find the end zone late as Green engineered an eight-play, 80-yard drive in the closing minutes. WR Samie Parker would be the key target on the drive, hauling in three passes for 52 yards. Then, Green found Hall in the end zone for a five-yard TD to provide the final score in a 20-10 Baltimore win.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs had a streak of 18 consecutive home wins in the month of December snapped, the longest such streak since the AFL-NFL merger. • RB Larry Johnson moved ahead of RB Abner Haynes (3,837) for fourth on the Chiefs all-time rushing chart.

RB Larry Johnson rushes for 120 yards on the Ravens number one ranked defense.
