War Games

On tour from the V&A Museum of Childhood

7 February – 10 May

War Games explores the fascinating relationship between conflict and children’s play, providing an insight into the ways toys have been influenced by warfare from 1800 to the present day.

With toys and games including Risk, GI Joe and classic British toy soldiers, as well as photographs and archive documents, War Games represents differing sides of conflicts from around the world. This thought-provoking exhibition reveals the sometimes surprising links between play and wider attitudes towards warfare, and delves into the secret history of toys as tools of propaganda and espionage.

SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY

Kurt Jackson: Place

14 November – 7 March, Galleries 7&8

Place, the latest exhibition by contemporary artist Kurt Jackson sees him collaborate with 32 writers from a diverse range of backgrounds and results in a body of work that reveals the physical diversity of the British landscape, while providing an insight into the concept of ‘place’.

By inviting contributors to write a personal transcript of a place they felt a connection to, Jackson was able to gain an insight into how this eclectic mix of writers and thinkers view the British landscape. This created a unique opportunity for him to shift the location of his work away from the immediately personal, to environments and landscapes that generate a sense of attachment in others.

The Age of Sail

13 December – 15 April

Gallery 6

From coastal scenes, fishing boats and pleasure yachts to naval vessels in action, this exhibition of paintings, etchings and watercolours from Southampton’s collections evokes the era of square riggers and sailing craft. The exhibition contains works by established marine painters such as Eugène Louis Boudin and Peter Monamy, as well as lesser known, local artists. Also included is an etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler from his Thames Set series.

ARTIST ROOMS: Louise Bourgeois, A Woman Without Secrets

16 January – 18 April, Gallery 1-4

Southampton City Art Gallery is delighted to be the first venue in the south to host this major presentation of works by the renowned French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, as part of ARTIST ROOMS on Tour.

This exhibition brings together a group of works that reveal how the artist, working in a variety of materials and scales, explores the mystery and beauty of human emotions. Through recurring motifs such as spirals, spiders and the human form, Bourgeois’ deeply personal and emotive works examine themes such as fear, death, motherhood, sexuality and love.

To coincide with this exhibition a display of artwork from the permanent collection has been thoughtfully selected and reinterpreted by a group of young people. This will be shown in the art gallery’s main hall alongside works they have personally created inspired by the life and work of Louise Bourgeois.

Greig Gilbert 20 March – 18 July, Gallery 7

Greig Gilbert’s work is intimately connected to and inspired by Southampton; exploring notions of memory and its relationship to place. Primarily working in biro, this exhibition will be comprised of intricate miniature drawings and reliefs depicting a mythologized Southampton, where different epochs coexist. Drawing on the councils extensive archive for inspiration and using historic postcards and photographs, these images are personal reflections on the city and its recent past.

Phoebe Cummings: Production Line 21 Feb – 18 April 2015, Gallery 5

Production Line is a joint acquisition between Southampton City Art Gallery, York Art Gallery and Shipley Art Gallery, funded through the Contemporary Art Society.

Made directly in the gallery space, a construction of clay is built onto a rope and hoisted as it is made. This temporary sculpture considers the choreography of making, beyond

the studio or factory, and the possibility for clay to produce objects which are neither fixed nor permanent. After the duration of the show, the piece will be dissolved in water and the clay reclaimed as raw material. The work will remain in the permanent collections of the participating museums as documented through photographs and film.

Saxon Southampton Coming in July 2015

Saxon Hamwic was a thriving town, international port and manufacturing centre, situated in what is now the St Mary’s area of Southampton. This exhibition showcases archaeological finds which shed light on how people lived and worked here over a thousand years ago.
