as Sherree herself says: “the long Summer days bring with them the most wonderful array of social events including royal ascot, one of the highlights of the year. But to me this great occasion is special for quite another reason. this is the time of year when the light is at its most glorious; with the sun blazing high in the sky, the elegantly clad women in their fabulous hats take on an almost exotic quality – like butterflies or birds of paradise. when i see them against the famous backdrop of this historic sporting venue the effect is simply irresistible, and i am soon mixing a palette of radiant pinks and luminescent whites alongside traditional lawn greens and dark browns. then there are those long days we all remember from our childhoods, when the sun never seems to set and we can play endlessly out of doors, bathed in that magnificent midsummer light. Just the thought has me reaching for my camera or sketchbook…” sherree’s award-winning impressionistic images are on show in the gallery, or log on to www.sherreevalentinedaines.com to view her complete collection and to watch a series of short documentary films of her paintings live on television.

the exquisite new collection from Sherree valentine daines demonstrates her unique command of light and shadow on canvas, and her gift for creating unrivalled impressionistic portrayals of the english summer.

A major characteristic of impressionist painting is the artist’s commitment to the study of light. The way the light changes the shadows and colours of a scene has a strong influence on sherree’s choice of subject.

danielle is a deeply thoughtful individual, and does not describe herself as a ‘floral artist’. instead for her, flowers

are used as a ‘carrier’ to highlight the spiritual feelings, emotions and relationships that she wishes to convey in her

pieces. She spent six months in Japan submitting works to gain a qualification in sumi-e, Japanese brush painting and

says that her training in this discipline was key in her being able to convey her spiritual side. She was given the name

‘chi-Sho’ (source of joy), by the head sensei of the institute where she studied, a beautiful phrase which can be applied

both to her personally and to her exquisite compositions.

Where do you get your ideas from for

your paintings? life – just everyday life;

things that i hear and see – my mind

is constantly buzzing! even when i’m

involved with a painting new ideas form

and i develop these and look at ways of

incorporating them into new work.

How do you choose your titles?

usually these days i have the titles

ahead of the paintings. i have a huge

list of potential ideas that i’ve picked

up during conversations with people or

things that i hear or read in the media.

i probably add between 10 and 20 new

suggestions each week. then i sort of

marry the title with a suitable image

that i’ve got in mind – i also have lots

of my own photographic reference

material which i use as the basis for

each picture.

you work in such incredible detail.

How long do your paintings take you

to do? there is no easy answer here as

so much depends on the subject matter

and the size of the work. On occasion i

do work fast, but more often i take two

to three months of intensive painting

to complete a piece. i’m certainly not

prolific.

Do you have any particular favourites?

this is always a difficult one because

i have lots. i’d have to mention ‘Zebra

crossing’ as i just love the aubergine

colour and it’s different from anything

i’ve done before. i like pieces for

different reasons, sometimes for their

simplicity, sometimes because of their

hybrid character as both bizarre and

classic – arty and quirky. i’m excited

about my new work, as i feel i’m getting

more bold and experimental so am

enjoying the process.

What do you like most about being an

artist? freedom. i’m not answerable to

anyone, and now that i have achieved a

certain amount of success i can pretty

much paint what i like. consequently i

no longer take commissions as doing

this inhibits my creativity. i enjoy the

thrill of the creative process - seeing

ideas come to fruition on the canvas

and having my work appreciated - that

always gives me a good feeling. i do

know i’m very lucky.

your graffiti scenes have been

particularly popular. Do you know

why? i’ve been taken by surprise at the

range of people that have bought these

pieces, from all age groups and all

walks of life. i think people appreciate

the detail in them and i don’t think

they’ve seen this type of juxtaposition

before – plus i suspect there’s a bit of

rebel in everyone.

Philip gray has built an extraordinary reputation as a man of action over the last few years, creating a fabulous portfolio of what the critics have termed his ‘extreme art’.

after his adventures on the seabed

painting amongst the sharks, and a

mountaineering expedition during which

he painted and sketched 20,000 feet up

everest, the question his fans are asking

is, whatever next? in fact the decision is

made, and Philip is out of the country at the

moment, taking his easel and brushes into

a whole new, and extremely challenging,

environment… all will be revealed in Spring

2011. But meanwhile his new collection

shows the other side of this gentle man,

whose talent embraces not only the

dramatic moments of life, but also the calm

beauty of a glorious coastline. while these

pieces may be serene portrayals of a less

challenging and adventurous world, they are

still arresting comments on the epic and

awesome beauty of the world around us.

in the language of art, romantic realism

descibes a genre of work that applies

naturalistic representation to idealized

forms, and this makes it the best

descriptive term for anna’s figurative

paintings. her contemporary impressions

have great power and drama with emotion

and energy conveyed through bold brush

strokes and vivid colour.

artists have been trying to encapsulate

the essence of beauty since art emerged

as a form of self-expression. with her

classic figurative forms expressed through

the lens of a very modern aesthetic, anna

magically captures the lyrical romanticism

of renaissance portraiture while creating

art that is completely modern and original,

a true reflection of herself as a person,

and an artist.

the allure of anna’s work comes from the

fact that she loves to explore juxtapositions

of art and emotion, strength and fragility,

sensuality and innocence. “But, i am not

so serious as that!” she laughs. “i love to

paint things that are beautiful – things that

make me happy.”

to appreciate anna’s art is to appreciate the essence of this artist, effortless and lighthearted, sensual, optimistic and beautiful. “i paint what i feel, and therefore my paintings are a part of myself.”

will KempHeritagewill is an artist with a great respect for the history, tradition and masters of art, both in terms of genre and technique.his preferred medium is oil paint which he sees as a contextual tool referring back

to the tradition of the old masters, but he also loves the simple joys afforded by the

smell of turpentine and the deep buttery colours. he has long enjoyed a love affair

with the artistic history of italy, and after graduation travelled for some months on

what he describes as a ‘renaissance pilgrimage’ to acquaint himself better with the

work of the masters.

will’s command of his artistic heritage adds a unique depth to his striking contemporary landscapes which have won him an impressive array of awards.
