By Paul Mitchell Paul’s Computer RepairMy Personal History of Personal Computers...my mother brought home a Tandy 1000 EX IBM compati-

ble computer around 1987. Probably from Radio Shack. I was 11 years old at the time. It came with MS-DOS2.11, Microsoft Disk Operating System. This was before any version of Windows. My Uncle provided a fewgames such as golf and we kids could type up papers. The monitor or screen as we call it today had 4 col-ors.

My next computer was a 486SX IBM compatible that was custom ordered and built by a piano teacher’shusband. It came with, the newly released CD-ROM. I was 16 years old and quickly broke this computer inone week. We had to have someone come and fix it. After that I bought a book on DOS 6.0 and read it reli-giously. In fact, I have read the book from cover to cover, just not in sequential order. I still have yet to readthe bible all the way through. None the less, this was my foundation for learning all of Microsoft DOS andlater Windows Operating Systems.

I was in college when I had my buddy build me my next computer. I think it was a Cyrix 686 micro-processor running Windows 98. It had a very expensive CD Burner, cost $300. The machine cost a total of$3,000. Man have prices come down!

In 2001 I built my first computer. I included the new Intel Pentium 2.53GHz Processor. It ran the newlyreleased Windows XP Operating System. I had a lot of fun with this computer and I kept it for many years. Infact, spring of 2011 is when I replaced it.

Intel i5 2500K is the brain of the computers I build and use today. It features a quad core chip with agraphics processor built into the CPU. I use no other graphics card or chip. Windows 7 and Windows 8 Con-sumer Preview are installed on my new rig. I will switch over to Windows 8 as soon as it is released to thepublic. I love the new Microsoft OS.

Computer Building and Repair History. Over the years I’ve built many computers for family, friends, andcustomers. I have maintained my own computer since my college days. Once I put together two computersfor a friend in one hour. The installation of the OS took another hour. He was very impressed. It was sheerjoy for me. I have repaired computers in the Gainesville area for 2 years now. Computers are my life.

You Young Whipper Snappers!! I enjoy having conversions about computers. Today, I see the com-puter industry as just a part of our digital life. Computers are now in your car, microwave, TV, phone, cam-era, music player, oven, cable box, and DVR. Today, we communicate through computers. There was nointernet when I started with computers. Thanks Al Gore...haha. There were no wireless phones and textingdid not exist. Well maybe on Star Trek. There was no such thing as a Compact Disc, CD. I started when therewas not even a hard drive in personal computers. I remember when cassette tapes were used with comput-ers. Children today have never seen floppy disc. In fact, you might not know what a floppy disc is or what todo with it if you had one.

Paul’s Computer Repair Company. Paul’s Computer Repair Company is an all-inclusive luxury com-

puter repair and training service. I provide onsite service for computers, printers and networking equipment.You never need to unhook your computer and bring it down to a shop. I can work on multiple computers atyour home for a flat rate. There is no charge unless you get a solution. No solution...it’s free.

Philosophy. I come to your office or home for two reasons. It is more convenient for you. No unplug-ging all your gear and bring it to a shop. Also, not all of issues can be addressed at a shop. I can’t con-figure your wireless router at my shop. It has to be done at your home where the router is in use.

Pricing. Pricing is simple. I charge $75 to come to your home or office and fix as many issues as can bedone in a 3 hour window. There is no discount for service completed in less than 3 hours. Any computer ordevice needing more attention than 3 hours may be taken to my shop and brought back to you. The chargefor this is an additional $35. Parts are charged to you at my cost. Very rarely are parts needed. And I provideyou with choices when it comes to buying parts to fix your machines. There is no charge if I cannot helpyou.

Service. Service is my goal. I hope to inform and educate you as to the best practices for taking care ofyour computers and your digital life.

Free Items. Many things in today’s computer world are free. You can get free virus scanners, free photoeditors and free office software just to name a few. Ask me about these few programs and how they mightbenefit you. It’s all part of the personal service I provide.
