SpringSpring is a ring that inspires children to go outside and find beauty in nature. The ring’s structure is completed by wildflowers collected by the wearer. This project creates an opportunity for friends or family to search for flowers and create arrangements together.

Inspiration

Children are surrounded by computer games and phone applications that keep them indoors. Spring is a ring that inspires children to go outside, enjoy nature and find a beauty in something natural: flowers. Spring is for every age. By engaging in a familiar action, Spring makes a connection between adults and children by performing the simple, yet familiar action of making rings out of flowers.

Spring is a ring that encourages the wearer to pick wild flowers and weave them into the ring’s structure. The beauty of Spring comes out of the flower that is added to it, not the ring itself. The ring comes in two different styles in polished gold steel and sterling silver. There are three adjustable sizes available for children, women, and men.

Internship at

My internship experience at Fferrone Design taught me various skills needed to be a professional designer: manufacturing process, realistic design regarding material choice, preparing a publication, and making aesthetically informed choices. It was a valuable experience witnessing the development of all the projects from initial sketches to publishable final products.

Aesthetic language is the most significant thing I learned as I worked with Felicia Fferrone. Her minimalism, balance and clean design influ-enced me to incorporate those ideas into my work. She also focuses on specific details such as the beveled edge of a tabletop. Her works are also meticulously designed to make perfectly balanced proportions and shapes; she strategically tests every possible option until she finds the best choice. These strong features became a firm base for my de-signs, which is vital for me to create high-end designed objects.

I also developed a stronger sence of material and production philosophy during my time at fferrone. Her design philosophy is to work closely with and understand the materials and the producers. Fferrone starts by getting to know the material and then she designs an object. This distinct philosophy is an approach I’d like to incorporate in my own practice.

Doppio is a tray and a chopping board for cheese, snack, and fruit. One side is black marble and the other side is white marble with a curved profile. I helped with design development during theinternship. Designed by fferrone design Ltd,

Design for FferronMy experience at fferrone design inspired this project. I blended fferrone’s process, minimalist style, and materials with my own. I usually start with the concept but this time, like fferrone, I started by thinking about shape. I created a candleholder by adjoining two minimal shapes made of two different materials. The base of the candleholder is a cone shape made of transparent glass. Another smaller cone shape composed of metal is inserted into the mouth of the base; its sharp tip touches the bottom. A needle is inside the smaller cone to stabilize the candle. The candleholder gives the illusion of floating and free standing.

ABOUT Kim HyunJoo StudioKim HyunJoo Studio is a freelance Design studio based in Seoul, South Korea. The studio mainly designs furniture, home accessories and tableware. During the summer of 2013, I worked on design research, rendered and illustrated ideas, made prototypes, and lead a couple of different projects. Kim HyunJoo Studio mainly uses natural stone to fashion home products.

The main project I worked on at Kim HyunJoo Studio was Cloud Cat Shelf. It was a project for the magazine Korean Maison to release a special page entitled “Home Products for Pets and People.” Cat furniture is often unattractive and can visually takes over a space. It is a Cat Shelf that is designed to satisfy an owner and his or her pet. It creates play space for cats and is also an attractive wall decoration. The inspiration comes from observing cat’s habits. It is a fun design that makes an imaginary moment a reality, cats peeking out from behind floating clouds.

Traditionally collage is a collection of media, such as paper and fabric, arranged to create an image. In this case, water is one of the materials. This is an installation piece that portrays my observations of the surrounding environment. Instead using paint and canvas, the floating river is the material used to create a collage. I made the collage with two different types of water texture: flowing and pounding. I controlled the texture of the river by framing the floating water. Light plays an essential role; if the water is very flat there is more reflection. I added additional layers, color and shape, with floating boats.

Flower Vase or Pencil Holder ?This pencil vase can make the work environment more pleasing. Placing a �ower vase instead of a boring pencil holder can make people feel relaxed and reduce negative feeling toward their working place. This pencil vase is shaped like a �ower vase on one side, and the other side is where you can put o�ce tools. Just by turning the vase it becomes a pencil vase and it also goes back to a �ower vase. Would you rather have a pencil holder or pencil vase on your o�ce desk?

This pencil vase makes a work environment more pleasing. Unlike a typical pencil holder, a flower vase makes people feel more relaxed and reduces stress in the workplace. A pencil vase is shaped like a flower vase on one side and like a pencil holder on the other side. Combining the two objects serves two functions: it holds office supplies and resembles a flower. By turning the vase the user transforms the object.

A Piece of Cake

Despite the sweet pleasure, eating cake can be very frustrating. Once the cake is cut and moved onto a plate, it usually falls over. This cake plate that will save people from this irritating experience. The plates are designed to hold pieces of cake upright. Slightly tilting the plates and shaping them like cake easily solve the problem. These cake shaped plates are fun and save you from the disappointing moments that happen almost every time you eat cake. Do not let this sad moment happen when you celebrate special occasions with cake.

Drawer Tea Set

Drinking tea from a complete set is a unique pleasure. Usually, tea is consumed from a haphazard collection of assorted mugs and cups. A complete set usually includes a pot, two cups, two saucers, and a sugar and creamer set. A complete tea set usually takes up a lot of space. They are typically round, the individual objects don’t have assigned places, and it is difficult to store.I created and designed a new system to efficiently organize an entire tea set. Drawers inspire this design. Each item in the tea set functions as a drawer and fits into one base. This design is simple and solves a problem. These unique square shapes are not only efficient but are also aesthetically pleasing.

I analyzed a sake bottle made out of ceramic, through defining detail elements influenced by its color, material, shape and texture. I Made two other family objects that reflect the initial object that I analyzed. The sake bottle has two indents for holding and dotted textures are placed a quarter inches a part from the bottom and neck. Dots are laid out on an irregular grid and varying sizes. This is the general shape is the traditional Japanese sake bottle. I designed one plate and a cup, which can be family objects to the Sake Bottle. The shape of cup was carefully selected to match the bottle. Also, the cup has a controlled dotted texture like the bottle. The shape of the plate is also inspired by the sake bottle. A rounded organic shape makes harmony with the bottle. This elongated and round-like plate can be used for snacks to be served with Sake.

Family Design

12 Month Clock

At the end of the year we often wonder where the time has gone. This clock is designed to show time as it passes through the year giving the user a larger view of time in terms of months and years, not just minutes and seconds.

Clocks usually have hands that show the hour and minute, breaking time down into twelve segments. Years are also divided into sections of twelve: months. Coincidently, clocks are already numbered one through twelve. By adding a hand to signify the month and a gradient design to denote year, the clock communicates time on a greater scale. The hour and date hands are the same color, chromatically connecting them. The numerals for month and date are framed in red. The color starts at the one, almost undetectable, and gradually becomes more saturated as the circle travels around the clock, finishing where it started. As the year progresses, the color gets darker so that people can keep track of the year. Like some clocks, this clock shows the day in a small square on the face near the three. This clock shows month, date, hour, and minute.

One year is a long time. Instead of merely being aware of minutes, seconds, and hours, with this clock the user sees time as day, month, and year

Design with MaterialsOne Infinite Candle

Reflective material is used to maximize the effect of a candle’s flame. When two mirrors face each other they create infinite reflections of objects. This candleholder is designed with this infinitely reflective idea in mind. One-way mirror is a specialized material; on one side there is clear glass and on the other side is mirror. With this object, the mirror side faces in. Due to using this specialized material, an object that is placed inside of a box could look infinite even from the outside. This one-way mirror box is a candleholder that multiplies the effect of a fire’s flame from a single candle. The base is made of ceramic with a circular indent to hold the candle in place.

Material Research on One-way MirrorsOne-way glass is only reflective from one side; the observer is able to see straight through it. From the other side, all the people are able to see is a regular mirror. The glass is coated with, or has encased within, a thin and almost-transparent layer of metal, usually aluminum. The result is a mirrored surface that reflects some light and is penetrated by the rest. This particular material is often used for spaces such as interrogation rooms, experimental research or for market research.

This project is focused on utilizing woodshop skills that is requires for furniture making. In this process of making furniture by hand, I have leaned how to make things by wood. I have learned how the different pieces of furniture are composing a whole. Also I havelearned how those pieces are joined and connected properly to support the weight of the furniture. This wood shop experience helped me understand the big picture of furniture composition. It helped me to design and physically execute furniture.

Dice are interesting objects; each of the six sides inspires a different outcome. The varying quality of dice inspired this furniture. Like dice, this furniture has various functions depending on how users place it. Each side is designed with general furniture dimensions and can be a bench, coffee table or stool.

Butler

Console tables are typically placed against a wall. I created a contemporary console table that is specifically designed to be located at a main entrance. Butler is a functional and fun piece of furniture. On one side of the console, instead of having legs, a flat mannequin supports the table. This figure adds humor to the common console table, changing the atmosphere around the space in a positive way. Not only is it a fun object, it is also functional. By placing this furniture next to an entrance, Butler is a transitional site between public and private spaces. As you walk into the doorway, you can put your coat, hat, umbrella, scarf and bag on the figure. This fun furniture creates a practical system for users. By consolidating the user’s belongings, the console table saves time when users prepare to go out and helps efficiently organize things for when they return.

It is too uncomfortable to read books when you are lying down. Lazy bench can help people to read books comfortably in a lying down position. You can look at a book through the hole that is designed at the end of this bench, instead trying hard to lift your body up by itself. This bench can make reading time more enjoyable without having any back pain, even with lying position.

Uncomfortable to ComfortableReading while lying down can be very uncomfortable. In some positions we must use our arms to hold the book up and away from our bodies. We also strain our necks in awkward and uncomfortable positions. These distorted stances are exhausting and painful. Lazy Bench can help people read books comfortably while lying down. Unlike an ordinary bench, Lazy Bench is a continuous shape. Starting with the traditional bench seat, the shape continues beneath the seat curving to create empty space below. At one end of the bench there is a hole for the user’s face. Below the hole the object curves slightly upward, an ideal place for a book to rest. Instead of a painful reading experience, this bench makes reading more enjoyable and ergonomic.
