Gabion and Wire Mattress Installation NEXY Basin Project for T&J ConstructionsIn March 2017 Ecodynamics was contracted to undertake its first major TerraStop® Gabion and Wire Mattress installation for a spillway on the Northern Expressway Detention Basin project. Ecodynamics subcontracted the works out to T&J construction who were awarded the works by the City of Playford.

The evolutionary TerraStop® Gabion and Wire Mattresses create flexible, durable and permanent structures that resist erosive forces. These materials work together by resisting large pressures that can cause overturning. These hexagonal steel-wire mesh cages are typically heavily galvanized and can also come with a superior, PVC coating with an estimated design life of 120 years on the PVC extruded coating. The TerrsStop® can also be zinc-galvanized which assists in reducing chances of corrosion in highly corrosive conditions such as those experienced in marine environments.

The Northern Expressway Detention Basin project involved the installation of 528m3 of Gabion Baskets and 253m2 of Wire Mattresses. This was performed in a runway which was 85m long and 3 meters of high stepped embankments. The first 6 weeks of the project were even performed in a live creek and this still didn’t result in the team running over the scheduled amount of time.

Although the project was given a 9 week timeframe by the head contractor, Ecodynamics successfully had completed the task ahead of schedule, within budget, and without incident. The reasons for completing on time and within budget can be attributed to the brilliant workmanship and the ease of applying such a well-designed and well-constructed material. This was even more impressive considering the amount of obstacles that the Ecodynamics team were able to overcome. These included:

• First major project delivered using the terrastop range ofGabions and Mattress to competitive marketproductivity and quality

• Tie-in to pre-existing structure, with significantdifferences in width and levels

• Custom shaping structure around 1.5m and 300mmstormwater pipes

• Working in a ‘live’ creek for the first 6 weeks ofthe project - still able to achieve completion ahead ofworking schedule

• Confined working space and limited access formachinery in creek invert: wrote and Implemented a fullworking “SWMS”( safe work method statement) with ZeroLTI throughout the project

We found the Terrastop range of Geotextiles And Gabions was readily acceptable by the client. The ease of construction of the gabions made the construction process as streamline as can be. As well as the full added COC for the product range offered, was easy for our customer to see we were using the highest performing product available.
