THE GEOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION WORLDWISE 2005- 06 LOCAL QUIZ This year we are providing seven rounds (plus a crossword), three of which require an oral response and four needing written answers. You do not have to use all of the rounds, depending on time available, or use them in any particular order. It would also be good idea if you could substitute some of the questions or rounds with ones of your own which focus on local geography. You may also wish to modify some of the questions to suit the ability of your teams, for instance by turning them into multiple-choice questions. In selecting your rounds try to get an appropriate balance between written and oral questions, keeping in mind that pupils will be able to make a bigger contribution to written answers while the oral rounds do build up a competitive atmosphere. Giving out the answers at the end of the rounds is time consuming but can give your ‘markers’ time to provide the scores. The teams will be interested in the answers anyway and it will give the questioner the opportunity to relax the teams with some informal discussion. It is important to acknowledge the contributions of our main sponsors, (The OS and the FIELD STUDIES COUNCIL) and to remind teachers that participation in, and not necessarily winning, the local quiz will be taken into account when the GA decides which schools to invite to the WORLDWISE CHALLENGE WEEKEND. This is a weekend of free and fun fieldwork activities for up to 10 teams of three pupils (years 8-10) plus a teacher that this year is being held over the weekend of 21-23 April 2006 at the FSC’s Malham Tarn Centre. We would also ask that you acknowledge the role of the GA and if appropriate encourage teachers accompanying teams from non-member schools to consider supporting geography by joining the association. Please remember to provide the GA with details of the teams taking part and whether or not they wish to be considered for invitation to the WORLDWISE CHALLENGE WEEKEND. The rounds included in the order that they appear in this document (but not necessarily the order in which you have to present them) are: Round Type GEOGRAPHY FROM THE NEWS Oral FIELDWORK ROUND Written MIXED BAG Oral

There is information in the round on ten new EU countries but you do not have to use all of it. Four or five may be sufficient, depending on time available. One or two could be saved for tie breakers if needed at the end. The flag is not essential but if it can be displayed or photocopied it is best used as part of the first question about each country.

You may wish to make this round easier by providing a list of EU countries

Questioner’s Introduction

10 new countries joined the EU in 2004

In each question in this round there are 5 clues and the flag to help you to work out the correct country. If you get the correct answer after the first question you get 5 marks, after the second question 4 marks and so on. If your answer is incorrect you are eliminated so think carefully before you submit an answer. Do not call out! Write your answer on a slip of paper.
