UNEP chooses Empower asa partner of its 'DistrictEnergy in Cities' initiative The United NationsEnvironment Programme(UNEP) has chosen EmiratesCentral Cooling SystemsCorporation (EMPOWER), theworld's largest district coolingservices provider, as a partnerof its 'District Energy in Cities'initiative, based on a case studypresented by the company inthis field, at the InternationalDistrict Energy Association(IDEA) Annual Conference andTrade Show in Boston.

The announcement cameamidst Empower's activeparticipation in the event, ledby HE Ahmad Bin Shafar,Chief Executive Officer ofEmpower. During the event,UNEP presented the 'DistrictEnergy in Cities' book, inwhich they selected Dubai as a"Business Model of DistrictCooling to Developing Cities"and Empower was named as apartner to contribute to DistrictEnergy in Cities initiative.

Empower was earlier invitedto discuss a work-plan that setsthe roadmap for the initiative. The company contributed tothree major areas: technical, capacity building and training, and communication andoutreach. The initiative comesat a time where estimatesshows that district coolingcould effectively serve 30% ofthe region's coolingrequirements by 2030, ifimplemented under the rightconditions, and could also leadto a reduction in the GCC'spower plant fuel consumptionequivalent to 200,000 barrels ofoil per day.

According to Bin Shafar, theendorsement of Empower'sbusiness model is the result ofstrong participation of

Empower in several globalevents, including UN ClimateSummit held last September,International District EnergyAssociation (IDEA) Conference2014 held in Dubai, ViennaEnergy Forum 2015 and theIDEA 2015 event.

Bin Shafar added: “It is amatter of great pride to bechosen a partner by UNEP.This is a reflection of thestrong internationalconfidence that Empower hasgained in record time. Moreover, the inclusion of

Empower in the 'DistrictEnergy in Cities' book as oneof the world's best models inthe district cooling industrywill enable other cities tobenefit from our experience. This is the fruit of ourimpactful participation ininternational events byhighlighting our keyachievements. Finnish growers meet theFlying DoctorsOn 21 April, sixty strawberryand raspberry growers fromFinland attended an excitingworkshop organized byBiobest.

The workshop took place inthe company of Jarvenkyla,Biobest's distributor in southernFinland. About sixty raspberryand strawberry growersattended the workshop. In themorning session, Dirk Aerts, area manager, and Sam Gui,sustainable crop managementspecialist at Biobest Belgium, made the participants

acquainted with the possiblecontribution of Biobest to theirpollination efforts and fightagainst diseases.

Central in the workshop wasthe control of grey mold. Thisharmful fungus, also calledBotrytis, needs continuous careand labour. Hence chemicalcrop protection involves animportant cost for the growers.Due to continuously loweringlimits for residues,strawberry/raspberry growersare forced to look for otheroptions.

Sam and Dirk presented tothe participants an innovativebiological control method: theapplication of the biofungicidePrestop® Mix*, by thebumblebees of the Biobest'sFlying Doctors® hive. “Ourpublic was excited about ourstory of Prestop® Mix, how itis distributed to the flowers andhow it's used in a preventativeway,” says Dirk.

The active substance ofPrestop® Mix is a beneficialfungus, namely Gliocladiumcatenulatum J1446, that occupiesthe surface of the flower. WhenBotrytis tries to install itself later, there is no place or food left.Besides this preventivemechanism, Gliocladium alsowraps itself around the firstappearing pathogenic fungi andproduces specific enzymes thatwill breakdown its cell-walls.Ultimately Gliocladium willdestroy Botrytis. Since last year,Prestop® Mix is authorized foruse with bumblebees in Finland.

The technology consists of abumblebee hive 'upgraded' witha patented dispenser system.Dirk: “When the bumblebeesleave the hive through thedispenser, Prestop® Mix sticksto the hairs of their bodies andPrestop® Mix is taken straightto the flowers. Precision.

more than 18 million perennialliners annually, has beencomparing plant performanceunder the LED toplightingversus HPS fixtures. TroyShumaker, Chief FinancialOfficer, Walters Gardens says,“With Philips LED fixtures wehave experienced greatlyreduced crop times with anincrease in overall plant qualitywhile using less energy.”Finishing times for dianthusand hibiscus were reduced byas much as 10-14 days. Otherresults included better survivalpercentage and consistentgrowth of plants throughout theplug tray, as well as faster andbetter rooting with compactplant growth for specificcultivars.

High wire crops, such ascucumbers and tomatoes, canbe produced year-round with100 % LED lighting. TheGreenQ/Improvement Center inthe Netherlands is on trackachieving a high yield of 95kg/m2 with their Komeetttomato variety in last year'strials. The Warsaw Universityof Sciences (SGGW) in Polandcompared crops grown underHPS versus 100% LED withthe same light sums in mol/m2.This resulted in a 23% higherproduction of a wintercucumber crop grown under100% LED lighting, and a 14%reduction in water usage perkilogram.

In many regions, themaximum light levels that canbe reached with HPS whengrowing lettuce for example, are limited by the number oflighting hours, because theplants need long nights toprevent tip burn. In our test atPSKW (Research Station forVegetable Production) inBelgium we were able to getthe same or better quality of

crops (compact heads and notip burn) compared to HPS.Red coloration of Oak leaf andLollo Rosso was also greatlyimproved using LEDs.

Light recipes benefit everyplant and phase

Since different crops requiredifferent light/temperaturesituations (alongside otherclimatic conditions) foroptimal growth, Philips hasalso invented specific lightrecipes for specific crops tohelp growers further enhancetheir crop results. A recipecombines the followingelements: light spectrum, intensity, illumination moment, uniformity, and positioning.Using a recipe, a grower cansteer specific plantcharacteristics, fromcompactness, color intensity, and branch development toflowering and more to improveresults. Philips Horticulture LEDlighting, a leadinginnovator of lighting

technologies to improve cropfarming, introduces the newGreenPower LED toplightingrange extension and a brandnew design for the NorthAmerican market at Cultivate'15. GreenPower LEDtoplighting is now one-and-a-half times more efficientconverting electricity to light(up to 2.7 µmol/Joule) thanany HPS system on themarket. LED toplightingproduces significantly lessradiation heat thanconventional HPS lamps, sogrowers can adjust light andtemperature more

independently. This allowsthe grower to grow bettercrops, faster, year-round andcontrol the greenhouseclimate more precisely.

Udo van Slooten, GeneralManager of Philips HorticultureLED Solutions adds, “This is animportant step in making LEDlighting systems 100% suitableto grow crops ranging fromhigh-wire crops and leafygreens to cut flowers, pot andbedding plants. We have seenincredible results also inpropagation by significantlyimproving quality as well asfaster rooting and morecompact growth. Light is nolonger the restricting factor ingrowing as now the plant can

receive the exact light level thatit needs.”

“We have designed ourGreenPower LED toplightingproduct to meet the stringentrequirements of UnderwritersLaboratories and CSA, andhave submitted them forcertification with theseauthorities”, says Ron DeKok,Philips Horticulture LED NorthAmerica Business DevelopmentDirector. “Growers across theglobe are increasingly turningto LED lighting systems toextend their growing season, improve plant quality, andreduce energy. Bicolored Apples from Europe – One Year into the Campaign BY: Agnieszka Okła, Chief Editor of Polish magazine Sad Nowoczesny

The last year's sixth edition of the WOP trade show in Dubai saw the launch of an informational and promotional campaign for Bicolored Apples from Europe addressed, among others, to the Arab market. Campaign organizers, The Association of Fruit and Vegetable Distributors ‘Fruit Union’ and Polish Orchard Owners Association were encouraging all people visiting the stands to sample the European jewel – bicolored apples. Each year, the United Arab Emirates import around 100,000-170,000 tons of apples from all over the world. Imported cultivars are mainly monocolored (mostly red) and distinctively sweet-tasting. The 3-year promotional campaign is aimed at helping to broaden these preferences, alluring the Arab customers to fruit of different colours and flavours. The choice of occasion for the launch was not random, as that international trade show

always attracts large numbers of food industry representatives. This, in turn, facilitated execution of the campaign's main first year objectives – developing new trade relationships, recognizing crucial demands of the Arab food market and identifying current industry trends. Information about the unique qualities of apples from Europe has also been spread by means of mass media. So far, features related to the campaign appeared in titles such as: Emirates Week, IQTISADI, Gulf News, as well as on Zawya. There have also been numerous mentions of the campaign across the Internet and in European press. Campaign coordinators are now focused on developing the positive attitudes in their crucial target group, namely – the UAE consumers. The latter half of the year 2015 is still ahead of us and there are numerous tasks scheduled for the months to come. Will the organizers successfully persuade the Arab consumer to appreciate the diversified flavours of European apples?
