Preface

The Hardware Installation Guide is written to guide installation personnel in setting up the G6™ Voice Gateway. Only qualified installers who are familiar with safety precautions for electronic components and equipment should perform this installation. The installation includes the following tasks:

Unpacking the G6 Voice Gateway and accessories necessary for installation

Mounting the gateway in a rack or cabinet

Connecting the gateway to the management stations

Connecting the gateway to the central office alarms

Connecting the gateway to the power source

Powering up the gateway

Installing any additional cards into the gateway

This guide describes the procedures to unpack, inspect, mount, install, cable, and power up a G6 Voice Gateway and its components. The guide provides step-by-step procedures for each installation and setup task. The guide provides illustration of the procedures in order to facilitate installation. The Hardware Installation Guide is written primarily for an audience that includes central office technicians (COTs).

Software Installation & StartUp Guide

This guide describes the procedures to install updated system software for a G6 Voice Gateway and start up the gateway. The guide provides step-by-step procedures for each installation and startup task. The system software resides on the G6 cards when they are shipped. The startup tasks are performed from the command line interface after the hardware installation. Reinstalling the software is necessary only when upgrading the system software. The audiences for which the Software Installation & StartUp Guide is written are software installers, network operators (NOs), network engineers, or central office technicians (COTs).

GenView EMS Installation & Configuration Guide

This guide describes the requirements and procedures to install and configure the GenView EMS software to manage the G6 Voice Gateway system. CLI Operation Guide & Commands Reference

This guide describes the procedures to operate and manage a G6 Voice Gateway system and the traffic flow through the gateway using the system software’s command line interface (CLI). The audiences for which the CLI Operation Guide & Commands Reference is written are network operators (NOs) or network operations center technicians (NOCTs). The CLI runs on a management console at the installation site or from a management station, typically at the network operations center (NOC). This guide also contains a reference listing of all system commands available from the CLI.

The guide provides information to help network and traffic planners integrate the G6 Voice Gateway system into a network and ensure its optimal performance, efficiency, and traffic flow across the network. The guide relates design and performance principles and techniques with specific procedures available through the GenView EMS. The audiences for which the Traffic Planning and Performance Management Guide is written are traffic planners, network planners, network engineers, network troubleshooters, and network operators (NOs).

Organization Overview describes General Bandwidth G6 Voice Gateway system components.

Unpacking and Inspection provides guidelines for unpacking, inventorying, and inspecting the G6 Voice Gateway components shipped against the configuration shipped to the customer.

Warnings identify a possible danger or hazard that can cause personal injury or substantial damage to property or equipment.

DANGER! SHOCK HAZARD!

A G6 shelf uses −48 VDC for primary power. This voltage is sufficient to overcome skin resistance and supplies a level of current that can be fatal.

Use extreme caution when working around this volt-age during installation, operation, testing, and main-tenance.

Remove the voltage at its point of distribution to the gateway before you connect or disconnect power to the gateway.

This section presents general precautions that you should observe while working with or operating the G6 Voice Gateway. Several precautions are presented here. Where a precaution applies to a specific procedure, it is repeated along with the procedure to which it applies.

Caution Lifting!The G6 chassis weighs about 120 pounds (54 kg) when fully populated. A fully-populated shelf has a shipping weight of 130 pounds (59 kg), including packing material and the pallet to which it is strapped.

Overview

This chapter provides an overview of the General Bandwidth G6 Voice Gateway hardware components. Each G6 chassis must include at least one system control module (SCM), which performs overall control functions and manages the flow of information between the other system modules. An optional second SCM provides system redundancy for the shelf. (This feature will be supported in a later release.) Figure 1 shows the G6 Voice Gateway chassis.

G6 Chassis

G6 Chassis The G6 chassis is 13 U (22.75 inches) tall, 17.5 inches wide (without mounting ears). The NEBS compliant version is 12 inches deep, which includes external network connectors (T1 Champs and BNCs) accessible from the rear of the chassis.

Mounting The G6 chassis can mount in a 23-inch or 19-inch (cable and wireless) rack or cabinet, using EIA or WECO standard mounting hole patterns. The card cage can be front-mounted or mid-mounted. Both 23-inch and 19-inch mounting ears are supplied with the unit, with the 23-inch mid-mount being the attached standard.

Cooling The chassis uses forced convection fans to cool from the bottom to the top of the cardcage. The 3-fan assembly (color-coded with purple latches) runs at 40VDC for noise reduction and reliability.

If the environment temperature rises to 41ºC (105ºF) the fan controller increases the rotational speed of the fans to 48VDC. In cases of fan failure (low rpm), the fan controller increases the rotational speed of the remaining fans to 48VDC to compensate. This process maintains a constant air flow throughout the G6 chassis.

An alarm on the fan tray and on the GenView EMS indicates a fan failure. A fully-loaded G6 shelf can run for 20 minutes with a single operating fan or with the fan tray removed, to allow for fan replacement or maintenance.

Overview

The fan assembly module is hot-swappable and can be removed or replaced with power applied to the chassis. The following chart describes the LEDs on the fan assembly module.

Grounding The chassis includes a frame ground connector (on the back of the NEBS compliant chassis or the front of the ETSI compliant chassis). Frame grounding is effected via a ground wire attached to the rack. The SCM-CI panel on the back of the chassis includes a transient ground connector.

ESD jacks on the front and back of the chassis provide ESD grounding. Anyone working on the G6 shelf or components should wear and plug in a wrist grounding strap while handling any of the module cards.

A full-populated G6 Voice Gateway includes 2 system control module (SCM) cards and 16 module cards. As many as 14 of the module cards can be telephony port module (TPM) cards. As many as 6 can be access network module (ANM) cards.

ANM cards can be installed in card slots 1–6 and TPM cards in slots 3–8 and 11–18. For each TPM or ANM card in the system, a cable interface module (CIM) card is required in the same slot on the back of the chassis. The partner CIMs for most cards provide the cabling connections out to the telephony network. Cards that support fiber connections include the network connectors on the front of the module card and use CIM blanks.

The cardcage meets GR-63 and GR-1089 requirements and draws a maximum of 425 watts, in compliance with NEBS regulations. A gasket on the side of each telephony card and CIM provides EMI protection for the card.

Overview

System Control Module

The SCM card performs overall system control functions as well as the ATM switching functions. The SCM manages the flow and synchronization of information to the other system modules. A G6 shelf supports a primary SCM card in card slot 9 and a hot standby in card slot 10. In a G6 shelf with redundant SCMs, the standby SCM continuously monitors all system activity and checks the operation decisions of the active SCM. If the standby SCM detects a fault, it assumes active control and removes the previously-active SCM from the bus. The now active SCM in slot 10 generates an alarm for the now inactive SCM in slot 9.

management and system configuration. The two Ethernet connectors in a redundant-SCM configuration connect to separate Ethernet LANs. The SCM-CI is not field replaceable.

Serial Craft Port on the SCM Card

A serial craft port on the front panel of each SCM card provides a means for updating, maintaining, and troubleshooting the system by craft personnel at the gateway installation site. The port uses a 9-pin D-sub connector and has the following operating parameters.

The SCM faceplate contains LED status indicators, two push button switches, and a connector for a serial craft interface.

Access Network Module

An access network module (ANM) card provides an interface to an ATM backbone network, digital subscriber line access module (DSLAM), or cable modem termination system (CMTS). ANM cards exchange connection-oriented, variable bit rate AAL2 or AAL5 traffic. AAL2 supports isochronous video or voice traffic over ATM. AAL5 supports IP traffic over ATM or LAN emulation (LANE) for an ATM-based LAN backbone. AAL5 has a low overhead also provides error recovery. ANM cards currently support DS3 framing.

Different CIM cards paired with an ANM card support different framing specifications (DS3, for example), transmission line types (T3 at 44.736 Mbps or E3 at 34.368 Mbps, for example), and network connections (paired BNCs). The 4-port DS3 CIM supports as many as 4 network connections to a DSLAM or an ATM backbone.

ANM Card Redundancy

The ANM cards use a 1:1 sparing scheme for redundancy. Installing a secondary, sparing card (and CIM) provides a redundant ANM interface (hot standby). Each standby ANM card provides hot standby for a single ANM card in the G6 shelf. The hot standby card typically resides in the card slot adjacent to the primary ANM card. A CIM-DS3 card installed along with the standby ANM enables routing of DS3 traffic from a failed

Telephony Port Module

A telephony port module (TPM) provides a high-speed interface to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via the GR-303, TR-008, ISDN PRI, or V5.2 line protocol.

Different CIM cards paired with a TPM card support different framing specifications (DS1, for example), transmission line types (T1 at 1.54 Mbps or E1 at 2.048 Mbps, for example), and network connections (Champ for T1 or BNC for E1, for example). The TPM cards and CIMs currently support T1 transmissions using DS1 framing. The CIM-T1 card supports 10 T1 lines.

Cable Interfaces Each ANM or TPM card requires a separate card to provide the electrical and cable interfaces. The two SCM cards have a common cable interface. Cable interfaces support management, network, alarm, and power connections.

SCM-CI Panel The SCM-CI services both the active and standby SCM.The SCM-CI panel includes two management ports with RJ-45 10/100Base-T Ethernet connectors. For redundancy, connect each management port to the GenView EMS via a different LAN. Figure 8 shows the primary (A, on the right) and standby (B) management port connectors on the SCM-CI panel.

Cable Interfaces

There are 24 fuse and alarm panel (FAP) wire-wrap pins on the SCM-CI to provide 12 relay closures. Each pin contains EMI egress filtering and GR-1089 surge protection. Only the active SCM can send an alarm. Figure 9 shows the audible, visible, and E2A alarm and events pins on the SCM-CI panel.

BITS and CC timing inputs can be connected to the SCM-CI. The inputs are provided on wire-wrap pins. BITS inputs are terminated with 100 ohms. CC inputs are terminated with 133 ohms. Thus, the G6 shelf supports termination even if no SCM cards are present, per GR-1244 requirements. BITS and CC inputs are protected against GR-1089 surge voltages. Figure 10 shows the BITS and CC external timing pins on the SCM-CI panel.

The SCM-CI panel provides a redundant 48V power interface for the chassis. The transformer on the SCM-CI minimizes EMI egress. The power connectors also have intra-building surge protection to meet GR-1089 requirements. Figure 11 shows the power connector block on the SCM-CI panel.

Cable Interfaces

The following chart summarizes the SCM-CI ports and connectors. An EEPROM on the SCM-CI stores a unique serial ID for the G6 chassis. After installation, the active SCM accesses the EEPROM for this information, and provides it to the GenView Element Management System (EMS).

CIM-DS3 and CIM-DS1/T1 Cards

The CIM-DS3 cards include 4 BNC network interface connectors. Each pair of 75-ohm BNC connectors (transmit and receive) supports one DS3 port. Both receive and transmit DS3 interfaces are differentially surge protected.

The CIM-DS1/T1 cards include a 50-pin Champ network interface connector to support 10 T1 lines. Each T1 interface on the CIM-DS1/T1 contains fuses and primary protection to tolerate lighting and surge protection for external wiring.

Figure 12 shows the CIM-DS1/T1 and CIM-DS3 card connectors.

CautionThe SCM-CI is mounted in the chassis during factory assembly. The SCM-CI cannot be removed from the chassis without taking the entire G6 Voice Gateway out of service. The SCM-CI is not field replaceable.

The status LED on the CIM card corresponds to the status card on the ANM or TPM card. The following chart shows the meanings for the status LED on the CIM cards.

The CIM-DS3s and CIM-DS1/T1s also include a wire-tie fastener and hold-down for local cable strain relief and cable management.

System Software

The G6 Voice Gateway stores system software in flash memory on the SCM cards, ANM cards, and TPM cards. In a redundant SCM configuration, all software can be dynamically updated without affecting the performance of the G6 Voice Gateway (in service). Two methods are available to dynamically update the system software.

Software can be downloaded via TFTP from a management console at the gateway installation site. The console connects to the serial craft port on the front of the SCM card.

Software can be downloaded via TFTP or through the GenView EMS from a management station at the network operation center (NOC). The management station connects via an Ethernet LAN to the 100Base-T Ethernet port on the back of the chassis.

Updates to the TPM or ANM system software are also through the craft port or Ethernet port. In-service TPM or ANM system software updates require a redundant TPM or ANM configuration, respectively.

The SCM stores all provisioning information in local nonvolatile memory. In the event of a power loss, the G6 Voice Gateway retains provisioning information.

This chapter provides general guidelines for unpacking the G6 Voice Gateway chassis and its components. Verify that all ordered equipment, cards, cables, and so forth are included. Unpack and Inspect for Damage

Each G6 Voice Gateway chassis is securely packaged in a heavy-duty crate. General Bandwidth can ship your chassis with all cards installed or with the cards separate. If packaged separately, the module cards are packaged in a smaller box inside anti-static bags.

Carefully inspect the shipping container and the G6 Voice Gateway equipment for damage as you unpack it. Check both the inside and outside of the container.

Aisle Requirements

The site preparation, safety and installation practices described in this chapter for a G6 Voice Gateway installation are based on the Telcordia Network Equipment Building Standards (NEBS).

Ensure that any additional preparation work not described in this document complies with local building and safety codes and with NEBS, as applicable.

Aisle Requirements

When installing a G6 Voice Gateway shelf into a mounting rack, be sure to allow enough room to access the rear of the unit for wiring/cabling purposes. Also allow enough front aisle space to install the G6 shelves from the front of the rack. Allow a minimum of 12 inches in the rear aisle and 12 inches in the front aisle. Whenever possible, follow the GR-63 aisle requirements.

Rack Requirements

Follow NEBS guidelines for installation distance from the closest surroundings. Also, many installations use a 1-foot rack unit (RU) fuse and alarm panel in the top mounting bay. You can install one, two, or three G6 shelves (Figure 15) in a standard or seismic 7-foot-tall, 19-inch or 23-inch relay rack.

Ventilation Considerations

The fan tray installs horizontally (Figure 14) at the bottom of the G6 Voice Gateway chassis. Leave at least a 1-RU space open below each shelf for proper ventilation.

The air filter tray is below the fan tray. Change the air filter monthly for proper filtration and operation.

Installing the Chassis

G6 Shelf Dimensions (U.S.)

The NEBS compliant G6 Voice Gateway chassis measures 22.75 inches tall × 17.5 inches wide × 11.025 inches deep (58 cm × 45 cm × 28 cm), without cables. The universal height measurement is 13 RU.

Network, power, and alarm cables connect through the rear of the unit. Including the external connectors (Champ for T1 and BNC for DS1) and allowing for cable bend, the depth is 12 inches. The chassis with the installed mounting ears fits into a 23-inch rack, mid mounted. A second set of ears is provided for mounting into a 19-inch rack. Both the 19-inch and the 23-inch ears support either mid mounting or front mounting.

Weight A G6 Voice Gateway shelf weighs approximately 120 pounds (54 kg) when it is fully-populated. The following chart shows the approximate weights of the front module cards, the cable interface module (CIM) cards, and the components.

Install the G6 Shelf

Follow these steps to install a G6 Voice Gateway chassis into a mounting rack.

1 Ensure that the mounting ears on the chassis are properly located for your rack installation. If you are installing into a 19-inch rack or mounting the ears at the front of the chassis instead of the middle, change or relocate the mounting ears.

2 From the front of the rack, slide the chassis into the rack.

3 Fasten the chassis to the rack with at least 3 of the provided rack mounting screws on each side.

Caution! Lifting HazardThe G6 chassis weighs about 120 pounds (54 kg) when fully populated. A fully-populated shelf has a shipping weight of 130 pounds (59 kg), including packing material and the pallet to which it is strapped.

Two people are required to lift a fully populated chas-sis. Grasp the bottom of the chassis and lift with both hands. To prevent injury, keep your back straight and lift with your legs, not your back.

This chapter describes how to ground the General Bandwidth G6 Voice Gateway chassis and then apply power to the G6 shelf.

Power Requirements

The G6 Voice Gateway uses a distributed power system. The midplane busses the power mains (redundant –48 VDC A and B rails) to each functional module in the chassis. Each module contains a DC/DC power circuit to convert the –48 VDC to the levels required by the components on that module. In the event of a power failure in the common power circuit on a module, the failure is isolated to the defective module and the module’s functionality is transferred to other resources in the system.

WARNING! POTENTIAL DANGER!

Do not work on the system, connect cables, or dis-connect cables during periods of lightning activity.

Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, neck-laces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause seri-ous burns or become welded to the terminals.

There are three grounds in the G6 Voice Gateway: frame ground, logic ground, and transient ground. The chassis includes frame ground for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression. The chassis has frame ground in the mounting holes, RJ-45 shields, BITS shields, and the outer layer of the sheet metal. Logic ground protects the logic components. Logic and frame ground are AC coupled on the midplane.

Transient ground provides lightning and surge protection for the G6 Voice Gateway. The G6 CIMs contain protection circuits for transient ground. The rack in which the G6 shelf is mounted must be connected to earth-ground.

When installing a chassis, always connect the frame ground before any other connections. Always disconnect the frame ground last. Figure 16 shows frame grounding.

1 Connect the grounding wire packaged with the chassis to the metal grounding lug on the chassis.

2 Connect the other end of the grounding wire to the rack. This provides frame ground to the chassis.

4 Use a digital multimeter (DMM) to verify the ground.

5 Touch a digital multimeter (set to resistance, Ω) to an unpainted part of the chassis and to the common ground in an unpainted part of the rack to verify that the chassis is grounded. (If the multimeter is set for sound, the beep indicates a good ground. Otherwise, visually check to ensure that a ground connection is made.)

Connect the G6 Alarms

This procedure shows how to connect the alarms on the G6 shelf to a fuse and alarm panel that is properly connected to the aisle alarm system. Use a cable stripper and wire-wrap tool to prepare and connect the cables.

The SCM-CI includes 24 fuse and alarm panel (FAP) wire-wrap pins, providing 12 relay closures. Each pin contains EMI egress filtering and GR-1089 surge protection.

The audible alarms are set up to connect (through the fuse and alarm panel) to a horn or other audible alarm device at the installation site. The alarm cut off button (ACO) on the SCM card turns off an audible alarm. The visual alarms connect to aisle lights or other visible alarm devices at the installation site. The E2A alarms provide input to the management stations via the EMS.

The SCM-CI busses the alarms together from both SCMs in a redundant controller configuration. Only the active SCM can send an alarm.

Follow these steps to connect the G6 Voice Gateway alarms to the alarm connectors on the fuse and alarm panel (FAP).

1 For the critical audible alarm, connect an alarm wire from pin 1 (+ high) on the audible alarm block on the chassis to the corresponding alarm pin on the FAP.

2 To complete the relay, connect a second wire from pin 2 (– low) to the corresponding alarm pin on the FAP.

Follow these steps to connect the G6 Voice Gateway management ports to the management stations and management consoles on the primary and redundant LANs. Figure 19 shows the management port connections to the LANs.

1 Connect the Ethernet RJ-45 connector for the primary LAN connection to management port A (labeled 10/100-A) on the SCM-CI panel on the back of the chassis.

2 Connect the Ethernet RJ-45 connector for the redundant LAN connection to management port B (labeled 10/100-B).

3 Use an appropriate tie-wrap to tie down the Ethernet management cables to the chassis. Color code and/or label the cables to identify them as Management Ports A and B.

Connect the External Timing Ports

A building interface timing system (BITS) provides a T1-formatted signal to carry timing. BITS is the preferred and most reliable timing source for a gateway. The A and B blocks provide redundant timing pins for both SCMs in a chassis. Figure 20 shows the external timing pins on the SCM-CI panel on the back of the chassis. Figure 21 shows an example of timing pins connected to the BITS.

1 Connect a timing wire to the primary tip timing pin (TIP on the A timing pin block).

6 Connect the primary sleeve timing wire to the primary sleeve (shield) pin on the timing panel.

7 Repeat steps 1 through 7 for the redundant timing pins.

8 If appropriate for your installation, bundle the timing cables together. Use an appropriate tie-wrap to tie down the timing cable bundle to the chassis. Label the cables to identify them.

Timing can also be provided externally from a T1/DS1 line, a DS3 line, or from a composite clock (CC). If timing is from a T1 or DS3, the G6 Voice Gateway receives the timing from a line connected to a T1 or DS3 port without further connections.

If BITS is connected, any simultaneous T1 and DS3 timing sources are secondary. The gateway does not support simultaneous BITS and CC timing sources.

If timing is from a CC, connect the timing pins exactly as described in the previous steps, but connecting the CC timing pins to the composite clock instead of to the BITS.

If all external timing sources are lost, the G6 Voice Gateway bases timing on the last source for up to 28 hours to allow for maintenance or updates to the timing system.

Before connecting the G6 shelf to the power source, verify that the power source is properly grounded and falls within the internal power supply ratings. The input –48V supply bus is protected by circuit breakers mounted on the rear lower panel of the G6 shelf. Each power supply has an internal major fault circuit protection fuse soldered in place (factory replaceable only) and rated at 25 A, 125 V. The G6 shelf incorporates a power supply monitor to monitor the power supply levels in each of the modules and manage the main hardware reset function on each module.

This procedure shows how to connect the power on the G6 shelf through a fuse and alarm panel that is properly connected to the power source. Using a small flat-head

screwdriver and the appropriate power wires, follow these steps to connect the G6 shelf to the power connectors on the fuse and alarm panel. Figure 22 shows the power connectors on the SCM-CI panel of the chassis.

1 Connect the negative (black in many systems) wire from the Rail A primary power source to the primary negative connector (A) on the power terminal block on the SCM-CI on the back of the chassis.

2 Connect the positive (red in many systems) wire from the Rail A primary power source to the primary positive connector (A-RTN) on the power terminal block.

Start Up the System

When a G6 Voice Gateway is shipped, the G6 system software is already installed on the SCM, ANM, and TPM cards. Access to this software is through a command line interface (CLI) provided on the SCM. Refer to the Software Installation & System StartUp Guide for information about starting up a G6 shelf. Refer to the CLI Operation Guide & Commands Reference for a list of the commands available and detailed information about using them.

Run Diagnostics

Use the General Bandwidth System Diagnostics to troubleshoot the G6 shelf installation.

Cable the Telephony Ports

The final physical step in installing a G6 Voice Gateway hardware is to connect the gateway into the network. The physical connections into the network are dependent on the equipment in a particular environment. In general, these physical connections consist of cabling G6 Voice Gateway to the network side (typically a Class 5 switch) and, ultimately, to the customer premises equipment.

Connect to the Network Side

Connecting to the network side typically consists of connecting the DS1/T1 ports to a Class 5 switch. The 50-pin connector on the TPM DS1/T1 CIM provides connections for 10 DS1/T1 ports. The bottom 4 pins (wires) provide T1 #10, the second, T1 #9, and so forth. The top 10 pins are not used.

2 If appropriate for your installation, use an appropriate tie-wrap to tie down the DS1/T1 cable to the chassis. Label the cable.

3 Following the color-coding scheme shown in the Color Coding Wire Scheme section, connect the first set of 4 wires for a T1 (usually T1 #1 or T1 #10) to the Class 5 switch. This connection may be a punchdown box, wire-wrap pins, DSX panel, multiplexer, channel bank, or other connection panel.

4 Follow the color-coding scheme to connect the appropriate four wires for each of the other 9 T1 ports. Connecting all 10 ports uses 40 of the wires in the DS1/T1 cable.

Color Coding Wire Scheme

The wiring illustrations in this section are based on the AT&T uniform color-coding scheme telephony wires. To simplify color coding large numbers of wires, each wire pair uses a two-color code with colors selected from two groups of five. The colors for a group are white, red, black, yellow, and violet. The colors for pair (within a group) are blue, orange, green, brown, and slate.

Caution!

The recommended bend radius for thin-type 735A coaxial cable or equivalent is not less than one-quarter of an inch. A sharper bend can result in the cable not working properly. Do not bend the DS3 cables at a sharper radius than one-quarter of an inch.

CPE Side Environments

The physical connections of the DS3 lines are dependent on the environment. The following diagrams show a few possible connection points.

DSLAM Connection

Figure 27 shows the connection in a DSLAM environment. In this case, the G6 connects directly to a DSLAM, which connects to IADs at the customer premises. The drawing is simplified to show only a simplex connection. A redundant connection would connect the 4 DS3 ports on the standby ANM DS3 card to a second DSLAM.

Adding ModuleCards

This chapter provides instructions on how to install additional module cards when you are upgrading a G6 shelf. Cards can be installed and removed while the G6 shelf is running (hot-swappable).

Tools and Supplies Required

Installing the G6 chassis into a rack requires only standard tools and supplies.

A flat-blade screwdriver and a #1 Phillips screwdriver

Wire cutters

Wire strippers

An antistatic ESD wrist grounding strap

A digital voltmeter

Cable bundling material, such as cable ties or waxed twine (depending on the location cabling requirements)

Cable identification tags or equivalent markers

Installing G6 Module Cards

After setting up the rack, chassis, ground, and power, install the G6 module cards that provide telephony and control features and the cable interface cards. Figures 30 through 33 show the card installations. When installing more than one type of card, install them in the following order to ensure that auto-discovery works properly.

Prepare the Slot Before installing a card, remove the faceplate or cover that covers the slot.

Install the SCM Cards

The SCM card is installed into the chassis as part of a typical factory installation. Follow this procedure to install an SCM card only if you are adding a new SCM

Use proper ESD precautions at all times when handling the G6 cards. Static volt-ages as low as 30V can damage circuitry. Observe all standard antistatic procedures when you handle the G6 Voice Gateway and components.

NoteInstall a card only into a TPM slot. Slots 3–8 and 11–18 support TPM cards. For TPM redundancy, install a sparing TPM card for the others (N+1 sparing). A typical config-uration is to install the TPM standby card (and a sparing CIM) in slot 18 of each G6 shelf.

CIM Cards

After installing the TPM cards, install a CIM-T1/DS1 for each primary TPM card and a sparing CIM for the standby TPM card. Read the section, Install CIM Cards, for instructions. Read the section, CIM Cards, for more information about the types of CIMs available.

CIM Cards The cable interface module (CIM) cards provide the backside electrical interfaces and cabling connections for SCM, ANM, and TPM cards. There are four types of CIMS.

SCM-CIThe SCM-CI card provides a power and cable interface to the chassis for both the active SCM card and the standby SCM card if one is installed.

CIM-DS3The CIM-DS3 card provides a primary DS3 interface (four or eight DS3 connectors). The CIM-DS3 card provides the cable interface for a primary ANM card. Each set of two 75-ohm BNC connectors on the CIM-DS1 card provides a single DS3 port.

CIM-DS1/T1The CIM-DS1/T1 card provides a primary DS1 interface (10 TPM T1/DS1 ports). The CIM-DS1/T1 card provides the cable interface for a primary TPM card. The CHAMP connector on the CIM-DS1 card provides the 10 T1/DS1 ports.

Caution

The SCM-CI is mounted in the chassis during factory assembly. The SCM-CI can-not be removed from the chassis without taking the entire G6 Voice Gateway out of service. The SCM-CI is not field replace-able.

CIM-SPAREThe CIM-SPARE card provides a standby DS1 interface that enables the SCM to redirect DS1 traffic through the sparing bus to a hot standby, dedicated sparing TPM card in the case of a TPM card failure. The CIM-SPARE card provides the cable interface for a standby TPM card.

Install a CIM Card

Refer to Figure 33 to perform the steps to install a CIM card into the G6 shelf.

Install a primary (active) CIM card for each primary ANM or TPM card you installed previously. Install a sparing CIM-DS3 card for each standby ANM card you installed previously. Install a sparing CIM-SPARE card for the standby TPM card you installed previously.

Ensure that the CIM slot numbers match the slot numbers into which you previously installed the cards. The CIM cards are color coded to match their corresponding cards.

1 Align the CIM card with the card guide and slide the card into the slot.

2 Tighten the thumbscrew to secure the card into the chassis.

If you are installing additional CIM cards, repeat this procedure to install the additional cards into the appropriate slots.

NoteInstall a CIM-DS3 or CIM-DS1 for each frontside ANM or TPM card, respectively. Install a CIM-SPARE card for each standby ANM or TPM card.

Install each CIM card into exactly the same slot number in which the card is installed.

Slots 1-6 support ANM cards.

Slots 3-8 and 11-18 support TPM cards.

Any card slots that are empty must be covered with a blank faceplate. Any CIM slots that do not contain a CIM must be covered with a blank cover panel. Blank faceplates and cover panels provide three important functions.

Do not remove the covers or faceplates from empty card slots. Install a cover or faceplate over any slot from which you remove a card.

Connect the Line Cables

After installing the cards, connect the line cables to the appropriate CIM cards.

Secure the Cables

After connecting the line cables to the appropriate CIM cards, secure and label the cables.

1 Use cable bundling material, such as cable ties or waxed twine to secure the cables to the rack or within a cable tray.

2 Use identification tags or equivalent markers to identify the cables.

WARNING

Do not operate the system unless all cards, face-plates, and covers are in place.

Remove a Frontside Card

Follow this procedure to remove an SCM card. If you have a redundant card, you can remove either the primary or secondary card without impacting system performance.

The G6 shelf is not fault tolerant when either of the SCM cards is removed. An ANM primary/standby pair is not fault tolerant when either the standby or the primary card in the pair is removed. None of the TPM cards are fault tolerant when the TPM standby card is removed.

Refer to Figure 34 while performing the steps to remove an SCM card.

Caution! Electrical Hazard

Use proper EDS precautions at all times when handling the G6 cards. Static voltages as low as 30V can cause latent damage to circuitry. Be sure to observe all standard antistatic procedures when you handle this unit, including wearing a grounding strap.
