Nebraska went 15-18 in 2012-13, culminating with a loss to Ohio State in the second round of the Big Ten Championship, and enters its second season under the helm of head coach Tim Miles.

The game against FGCU will be Nebraska’s first regular-sea-son contest in the brand-new, $179-million Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Cornhuskers return nine letterwinners, including three starters (Ray Gallegos, Shavon Shields and David Rivers), and add eight newcomers.

NU earned a 91-60 win in its lone exhibition game of the pre-season on Monday night over Nebraska-Kearney.

Senior guard Gallegos is the Husker’s top returning scorer at 12.5 per game but is suspended and will not play versus the Eagles. He led the Big Ten with 83 3-pointers last year, rank-ing second in school history.

FGCU is 0-6 all-time against Big Ten mem-

bers. The meeting with the Huskers will mark the third time in

program history the Eagles have opened a season versus a

Big Ten opponent.

FGCU ATHLETICSDID YOU KNOW? • FGCU has won a combined 30 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 6 years in Division I as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference & Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.

• In just 2 YEARS of Division I postseason eligibility, FGCU has sent 7 TEAMS to the NCAA Tournament, while men’s golf and women’s swimming have had an individual participate in their respective NCAA Championship each year.

• Backed by four Atlantic Sun regular season crowns and four more teams that finished in the top 3 of the conference standings, FGCU SWEPT all three of the A-SUN ALL-SPORT races in 2012-13. The four A-Sun regular season titles were tied for a league-high, while the Eagles are just the second A-Sun member to sweep the three All-Sport races.

• After becoming the first team into the NCAA field of 68 by winning the A-Sun Tournament, the FGCU men’s basketball team became the FIRST NO. 15 SEED IN NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY to advance to the SWEET 16. The Eagles became the Cinderella of the 2013 dance, as they defeated No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State. The team’s up-tempo style and refreshing charisma resulted in Fort Myers being called “Dunk City.”

• FGCU women’s basketball was just the second A-Sun team to produce a perfect conference regular season in 2011-12, going 18-0, but it became the first to do so in back-to-back seasons with its second straight 18-0 mark in 2012-13. The Eagles A-Sun regular season crown was their third in the last six years.

• FGCU’s 53 combined wins in men’s and women’s basketball in 2012-13 was the 9TH-BEST total in the nation, while it joined Duke, Louisville and Gonzaga as the only schools with at least 26 wins in both.

• In the fall of 2012, FGCU swept the A-Sun team sports regular season, taking home the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball crowns. For the second straight year, FGCU was the ONLY Division I school to win its conference regular season and postseason tournament in both men’s and women’s soccer.

• FGCU’s student-athletes achieved a record 3.31 CUMULATIVE GPA in the Spring of 2013 semester.

In Dunk City, the lights are as bright as everBy: Nicole Auerbach

FORT MYERS, Fla. — During Florida Gulf Coast’s mesmerizing Sweet 16 run last spring, Dunk City became a mythological place.

It was a land filled with high-flying acrobats, no-look passes and alley-oops, college basketball at its freest and most entertaining. It was a place set up more like a beach resort than a college cam-pus, where basketball players walked out of their apartments and onto the sand. It was the magical setting for the story of the first No. 15 seed to reach the second week of the NCAA tournament, the most Cinderella of all Cinderella teams.

In many ways, Dunk City is the stuff of legend. But here on this campus, it is every day reality.

“You come to this school, you can’t say no,” junior point guard Brett Comer said. “You have a beach on campus. The school looks like a re-sort. They just opened up this new pool with a full court for basketball. My teammate and I were in there the other day playing five on five. We played full-court basketball in the pool.

“Who does that?”

At one point last March, the city of Fort Myers identified itself as #DunkCity on its official web-site. Though the city did not officially rename it-self for perpetuity, the label has stuck. The school bookstore sells T-shirts with the moniker. “Dunk City” is engraved on some of the Sweet 16 rings.“The biggest thing we talk about is, we wouldn’t

be Dunk City if we hadn’t won,” new coach Joe Dooley said. “Everybody can talk about that, but the reason the highlights were on the TV were because they won.”

And because of those wins — against George-town and San Diego State — much has changed. People now know what FGCU, a school of 12,000 students, stands for and where it’s lo-cated. The Eagles will enter this season, which begins Friday with the opening of preseason practice, with a target on their backs. They’ll be on national TV four times. And there’s the big-gest change: Dooley is running the show now because Andy Enfield left for USC.

The good news is Dunk City isn’t going any-where. Dooley and his new players feel that FGCU’s style of play will be aggressive and exciting, just like it was last year. They’ll still push the ball up the court and dunk whenever possible. They’ve got four starters returning and two transfers from high major schools eligible.

Meanwhile, the university’s legal counsel is working to copyright the Dunk City name. In the meantime, the athletic department will use the nickname as much as possible, plastering it on the windows of Alico Arena and putting it on all of its men’s basketball communications.

“It’s nice to have that going for us,” Comer said. “Everybody knows Fort Myers is Dunk City.”

But what comes after the fairy tale ends? What happens now, six months later, when the bright lights and big headlines are gone — and FGCU is 0-0?

Straddling the line between celebrating last sea-son and starting from scratch again this fall has proven difficult. For a program that has played at the Division I level for just three years, it’s vital to maintain relevancy.

“Our goal is to be similar to George Mason, But-ler, VCU, Wichita State, to sustain it,” athletic director Ken Kavanagh said. “We don’t want to be a one-year — really, a two-week — thing.”

Lehigh coach Brett Reed understands the senti-ment better than most. Two years ago, his 15th-seeded Mountain Hawks upset No. 2 Duke in the NCAA tournament. Then, life moved on.

“As we spoke to our team, the biggest message last year was to fight the sense of entitlement, to fight some of the elements of human nature: feeling comfortable, resting on the history,” Reed said. “When you’re dealing with young men, you can’t always dictate where their emo-tional energy will be. Once you hit a milestone, a marking point like the beginning of practice, it becomes a situation where you’re not defend-ing a championship. You’re actually in pursuit of another.

“As you pursue that new championship, you cannot just rest on what happened in the past. That really has little to do with what happens in the future.”

Comer says he’ll never forget the tweet.

Three days after FGCU’s blur of a run ended, he sat in his dorm room, scrolling through Twitter when something caught his eye. His coach was leaving for USC after two years and a 41-28 re-cord at FGCU.

“We’re all like, what’s going on here?” Comer said. “It was shocking. I love what’s going on here. It’s tough. … I didn’t really come here for

the school. I came to play for Coach Enfield. When (he) leaves, I’m sitting here wondering what I’m doing here.”

A team meeting had been called for later that night. The players knew what was coming, and they weren’t happy.

“Coming off that emotional high where we’d just came from the Sweet 16, there was so much buzz around campus, and we find out we’re losing our coach,” senior forward Chase Fieler said. “I was really shocked.”

Kavanagh was less so. He knew he’d lose Enfield sooner rather than later, but even he thought maybe he’d get another year out of him. Considering the talent Enfield would have returning, it wasn’t unreasonable.

But during the week leading up to the Sweet 16, Enfield’s name got hotter and hotter as coach-ing vacancies opened at other more prominent schools. Then USC offered him their head coaching job and a $1 million salary.

“He was floored himself to tell me what he was offered and that he was going to accept it,” Ka-vanagh said. “He said, ‘This has nothing to do with FGCU. I can’t turn it down.’

“He took advantage of what he earned.”.

Kavanagh tried one last-ditch effort — did Enfield realize he’d be leaving Florida for a place with state income tax?

They laughed, and Enfield left, leaving Kavanagh to hire a replacement.

Kavanagh felt the FGCU job was appealing. Un-like some of the small-school teams who have made splashes in the NCAA tournament in recent years, last season’s Eagles weren’t made up of all upperclassmen.

“Some people would shy away from taking over if we had had, like, five seniors,” Kavanagh says. “Because now your expectations are that

you’re going to be really good — but it’s not going to happen like that. All of the sudden the next year, you don’t win. Who wants to be in that program?”

But that wasn’t the case here. Though it was losing Atlantic Sun player of the year Sherwood Brown, FGCU was returning four starters and would have transfers Nate Hicks (Georgia Tech) and Jamail Jones (Marquette) eligible after sitting out last season.

“Andy and his staff did a really good job not just of getting good players but of getting good people,” Dooley says. “They’ve developed them. There’s a really good nucleus that we are build-ing on.”

Kavanagh tapped Dooley for one reason: his entire body of work. He’d been a head coach before (at East Carolina in the mid-1990s) and he’d just spent 10 years under Bill Self at Kan-sas. Dooley kept three member of Enfield’s staff: associate head coach Marty Richter, assistant coach Michael Fly and director ofbasketball operation Joey Cantens.

By keeping that continuity, the transition between coaching staffs has gone “better than any of us could have expected,” Fieler said. “Coach Dooley seems to be the perfect fit, and it happened at the perfect time. It’s gone really smoothly.”

During Dooley’s first meeting with the team, he congratulated the players on their NCAA tournament run. At the same time, he spoke about building a winning tradition. At Kansas, he’d been a part of nine consecutive Big 12 regular season championship teams.

“We don’t want to be a one-and-done team,” Fieler said. “He wants to make sure we weren’t.”

If you wander around FGCU’s campus, you’ll see students walk-ing or biking around wearing T-shirts representing other schools. Florida, Miami and Florida State shirts pop up sporadically.

It used to be worse.

“You’d go to Dick’s (Sporting Goods) across the way,” Kava-nagh said. “It’d always bum you out as the AD, you’d go there and there’s nothing there for FGCU. It’s all other schools.”

Kavanagh understood it; there were a lot of commuters at this school, a lot of students who had developed allegiances before coming to Fort Myers.

But a funny thing happens when you become the darling of the NCAA tournament. People from all over southwest Florida Google directions to your campus. They race to the school book-store, park their cars on the side of the road and get in line for

FGCU apparel. Suddenly, the store can’t keep T-shirts in stock. Even Dick’s stocks up, too, and the shirts fly off the rack.

Now, six months later — after the dunks, the wins, the ESPYs, the tweets from Lil’ Wayne and LeBron James — things are quite different. The FGCU bookstore now sells dozens of dif-ferent shirts, not just the few varieties it used to. More students wear their own school’s apparel when they walk around campus, including some #DunkCity tees.

The Dirty Birds, FGCU’s student group, has more than 2,000 members this season, up from 1,300. Non-student season ticket sales are up 120%, Kavanagh said. At the Eagle Revolution, a free event with food and music in August, some 3,500 students showed to learn about the FGCU athletic programs.

“I’m starting my fifth year, and this is the first time we’ve had an incoming group of freshmen who are proud to be Eagles,” Ka-vanagh said. “They’ve been twittering stuff all summer. ‘I can’t wait to get to FGCU.’ … We’re starting to ride that wave.”

An exhilarating brand of basketball has helped build that ex-citement, and it’s what will help that grow.

Last season, FGCU scored 70 or more points 25 times. The Eagles averaged 8.9 steals per game, good for 16th in the nation. They dazzled by dunking — which drew praise from Harlem

Globetrotters, among others — and with their uptempo style of play during the NCAA tournament.

And that won’t go away with Enfield’s departure. FGCU intro-duced Dooley as the new “mayor of Dunk City,” and that’s what everyone around here expects him to be. After all, Kansas had some incredible athletes. The Jayhawks knew how to dunk, too.

“At Kansas, they played a lot like we do,” Fieler said. “They use their athleticism. They get out and run. They play very good defense — that’s one of the things he stresses.

“When we get stops and rebounds, we can push and run the floor like we do. If we can dunk, we’re going to dunk. He knows what makes us successful.”

The Eagles’ primary goal this season is something they didn’t accomplish last year: winning the Atlantic Sun regular season championship. The winner gets home-court advantage in the conference tournament.

Last season, in just their second season with Division I postsea-son eligibility, FGCU beat Mercer on the road for the league’s auto-bid to the NCAA tournament. Then Dunk City became a well-known address.

As FGCU opens practice Friday and gets its season underway in the coming weeks, it will face the challenge Lehigh faced a year ago: Balancing its past with its future.

Dooley knows this. He won’t even say this team will look all that similar to last year’s, though it will in many ways. He simply promises that these Eagles will be aggressive.

“We’d love to be Dunk City, but I’d rather win 50-48 than lose 87-80,” Dooley said. “We’ll play how we need to to win.”
