Our school profile is significantly higher than the national averages in both Year 3 and Year 5. These consistently high academic results are a clear demonstration of the excellent work our teachers are doing in classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 6 and the support students receive from their parents and families. I will review the school data with staff over the next few months to assist our plan- ning for 2015 programs. While our school performance has been excellent there are areas in which we can make improvements with targeted programs next year. Last week we commenced our summer sports program for Years 3-6. PSSA teams are now completing the second half of their summer competitions. Term 4 will continue the summer sports program. All students K-6 will be expected to be wearing summer uniform in Term 4. During the holiday break we will have two new demountable classrooms installed. We will be forming a new class to reduce the numbers in our Year 3 and Year 4 classes. This is an exten- sion class. Students will be working with Miss A. Roberts for the final term of the school year. Finally I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success our school has en- joyed during the term. Our students have experienced a wide range of academic, social, cultur- al and sporting activities as we develop a well rounded education for all students. Have a great holiday everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed for the final school term when we return in two weeks time. Warm regards, G. Tuesday 7th October Term 4 commences

Dear Parents,

As we complete our third term of the school year it is with continued pride that I can report on

excellent NAPLAN results achieved by our Year 3 and Year 5 students. Our school profile is

significantly higher than the national averages in both Year 3 and Year 5. These consistently

high academic results are a clear demonstration of the excellent work our teachers are doing in

classrooms from Kindergarten to Year 6 and the support students receive from their parents

and families. I will review the school data with staff over the next few months to assist our plan-

ning for 2015 programs. While our school performance has been excellent there are areas in

which we can make improvements with targeted programs next year.

Last week we commenced our summer sports program for Years 3-6. PSSA teams are now

completing the second half of their summer competitions. Term 4 will continue the summer

sports program.

All students K-6 will be expected to be wearing summer uniform in Term 4.

During the holiday break we will have two new demountable classrooms installed. We will be

forming a new class to reduce the numbers in our Year 3 and Year 4 classes. This is an exten-

sion class. Students will be working with Miss A. Roberts for the final term of the school year.

Finally I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success our school has en-

joyed during the term. Our students have experienced a wide range of academic, social, cultur-

al and sporting activities as we develop a well rounded education for all students.

Have a great holiday everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed for the final school

term when we return in two weeks time.

Warm regards,

G. Walker

BOOK FAIR

A huge thank you to all students, parents and caregivers who purchased books and

items at our Scholastic Book Fair held in August. Due to your generosity the Library is

able to purchase over $3500 worth of new books and resources for the children.

It was wonderful to see so many parents and caregivers enjoying the occasion.

A special thank you to my volunteer helpers: Mrs Gale, Mrs Byrnes, Mrs Goss, Mrs

Anand, Mrs Jani, Mrs Thevathasan, and Mrs Jegendran. Without you and the help of

many of the staff at Girraween PS the Book Fair would not have enjoyed the success that it did.

BOOKFEAST

On Thursday 11th September, Mr Heffernan and I took the twelve Library Monitors and

six avid readers from year 6 to Bookfeast. Here select students from all over Sydney

were given the opportunity to engage directly with Australian authors and illustrators

such as Christopher Cheng, Susanne Gervay, Patricia Bernard, Bruce Whatley, Di Wu, P.J. Thierney and many more.

We would like to thank the P&C who made it possible for so many of us to attend this

highly educational event.

Ideas to get your family moving:

Go outside and play chasing, ride bikes or throw a ball or a Frisbee. Encourage children to make their own obstacle course at home. You could use garden

hoses as tight-ropes, chairs to crawl under, and the clothes line to run around. Include a skipping rope and some jumping. For variety ask them to walk backwards, hop or skip through the obstacle course. Time them to see how they are improving.

Encourage your child to play outside whenever possible. Play along whenever you can. Be a good role model – be active when you’re with children. What gets children moving

is what parents do, not what they say. Children learn by example! Include games and walks in family outings. Negotiate a time limit on sedentary activities such as watching TV and playing computer

games. Walking together is a good time to talk to children about their lives and

yours.

the environment. In school communities, evidence of this value includes:

Reflecting policy and school community needs in school rules

Supporting the decisions of the school

Accepting responsibility for the school’s involvement in community activities

Including in school rules strategies to re-inforce appropriate behaviour as well as consequences for breaking rules.

In classrooms, evidence of this value includes:

Self-discipline

Modelling expected behaviours

Involvement in strategies to encourage compliance with school rules.

Keep brains ticking

If your child is working on a personal project or a school assign-ment or you want to do a little revision, don’t forget www.SchoolAtoZ.com.au has lots of information and fact sheets to help with homework. For students polishing their spelling skills, the free Spelling Bee mobile app also allows them to record a list of their own words and then test themselves. You might even want to challenge them with a list you create. Here’s where you’ll find the free app to download: http://bit.ly/Q9ez0G

Kids love rewards

Praise healthy habits. This may be snacking on fruit, drinking water and being active. Use treats like stickers, special games and outings, hugs and

praise.

Avoid using food as a reward.
