Variation Orders and Time Extensions

Variations in the actual construction are inevitable. There will always be a

time where in changes has to be made in the project so as to accommodate the need of the

client. These include changes in the scope of work, addition, substitution and omission of

any part of the job, and alteration of the materials to be used.

In Suntrust Parkview Project, to file a variation order, their first process is

to submit a e!uest for Information " #larification $%I& %orm to the owner,

'()*+- #P*TI/. 0ou can see in this form to whom the letter is

addressed, the date the form was made, the subject for clarification, the reference

clarification, and the details of !uestion or clarification. It also indicates here the

ultimatum for the reply for the purpose that the issue will be acknowledged as soon as

possible for accelerated solution. The form will be given back to the general contractor

with the reply from the owner of what will be done.

/e1t will be the filling up of the Purchase rder %orm to get the materials

from the suppliers to start the variation order. This will only be accomplished if the

variation order is for additional construction, like putting up a canopy, planting a new

column, etc.

In the sample %I %orm below, '(#, the general contractor, asks if the

specification of the canopy at main entrance will follow the original plan that is precast

concrete canopy or if they will adopt the material"detail used at Tower 2 which is made of

angle bar framing and aluminum composite cladding. . The owner3s response was to use

the design of canopy at tower 2. They have also included a key plan for the approved

solution.

In case that the change order is to eliminate something, there is no need

for the Purchase rder. nly in architectural aspect of the plan can only the plan be

altered in removing something from consideration. In most cases, variation orders re!uest

for time e1tension. This re!uest is asked in a form of letter sent to the owner indicating

the reason of the time e1tension. It also shows in the letter the planned start of the project

and its completion date. This is sent to the owner by the Project 'anager of the general

contractor.
