Featuring the collection of Richard S. Malone

Richard Sydney Malone was born in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia in 1919, shortly after the end of the “Great War,” in which his older brother Sydney gave the ultimate sacrifice. On the fateful day (Dec. 6th, 1917) in Halifax

Harbour, Sydney was onboard the tug boat Stella Maris, while making the daring attempt to tow the ship S.S. Mont-Blanc out of harm's way when it exploded resulting in he, and the majority of his crew-mates loss of life in what would become known as the “Halifax Explosion.”

“Richie” as he would become known later in life also had his own brush with death. As a young teenager he was involved in a hunting accident that left him handicapped, losing both an eye and a thumb. In many ways this event would lead to building his strong character and focus his life. He was always concerned about the well being of his family and others less fortunate than himself in the wider community. Richie was a long time member of the Philadelphia masonic lodge in Barrington and was affiliated with the Shriners in Halifax.

Ritchie, as a young man, met and married Gertrude and they subsequently raised three children. As a husband and wife team both were to become astute collectors, her passion with antique glass and his with coins and paper money. It was during the late 1930s and early ’40s that he began his collecting career which started by picking up odds and sods during an early business venture between himself and his brother at butchering and pedalling meats door to door. However, his first foray into the organized world of numismatics didn’t occur until 1964, when he attended the CNA convention in Halifax, N.S. At this time Richie was now a well established businessman having been a lobster buyer in the late 1940s and had recently moved into the field of fish meal processing. This also seemed to be a turning point in his collecting as he purchased approximately 50 lots in the auction. He soon developed a fascination with gold and paper money and collected each with vigour. The next significant event that he attended was the 1970 CNA Halifax convention, where he purchased 30 lots which included a number of select banknotes. After a lull in collecting his interests were once again piqued in the 1990s when he joined the Sou’wester Coin Club. Here he met fellow collectors, Doug Shand and Herbert Penney who were to become great friends and travelling companions to all of the major Maritime coin shows, where one could see Richie holding court in the

corner of the show reception with collectors making a beeline to him to either discuss coins, or just wanting to sit and talk with a friend and/or share memories with an old

acquaintance. Richie was a true gentleman, good friend and family patriarch who sadly passed away in 2010 at the age of 91.

664. Canada Ephemera. In 1991, Canadian artists were asked to submit designs for the provincial 25 cent coins to be issued in 1992. This design was one by David Craig for Nova Scotia. It is a depiction of Peggy’s Cove with lobster traps in the foreground. Ideal for framing. Although not used on the coins, it is a beautiful piece of art.

665. Canada Ephemera. Again, in 1983, artists were asked to submit designs for the 1984 cased silver dollar. The suggested theme was to be the 200th anniversary of New Brunswick as a province. Eventually, the anniversary of Toronto’s sesquicentennial was used with the familiar Indian canoe being paddled with the Toronto skyline in the background. This unused design was by Canadian artist Raymond Taylor featuring Toronto City Hall. Ideal for framing and a fine piece of art.
