Welcome to the Royal Conservatoire! You have been accepted to the first year of the Bachelor course at a highly multi-faceted institute which houses a large number of student colleagues, spread over a wide variety of departments. As senior students, teachers and staff, we want you to feel part of this inspirational society as quickly as possible, and to show you the many things the institute has to offer. As well as this, we are of course intrigued by you, and what your contribution to the Royal Conservatoire will be.

This festival offers you numerous opportunities to become acquainted with every aspect of our institute. We offer some previews to what will be happening this year. You will get to know many fellow students, your colleagues, and teachers in a very short period of time, and we’re challenging you with an early opportunity to show us what you can do. The programme has compulsory sections alongside a rich menu of elective choices, but either way there will be sufficient space to complete your personal obligations or to allow individual lessons to take place. All group lessons for first year Bachelors will however be suspended for this week.

Please note that the FYF programme is compulsory, you will need the course credits involved in order to finish the propaedeutic phase.

Those who wish to extend their introduction with student colleagues can enrol for activities organised by senior students; a jam session on Friday, a party on Saturday and/or an introduction weekend that will take place from 20 September to 22 September. There are costs involved in taking part in the introduction weekend.

You will read how all of this fits together in the following pages. We wish you an instructive and pleasant introduction to the Royal Conservatoire, and we look forward to getting to know you.

On behalf of the staff, teachers and students,

Henk van der MeulenPrincipal

9-13 SEPTEMBER 2013FYF is a festival to celebrate the arrival of new Bachelor students at the Royal Conservatoire at the beginning of the academic year. They are invited to present themselves and the school presents what it has to offer. FYF is dynamic and full of opportunities to meet new people and make new friends.

CREDITS

As a part of your study programme FYF is credited with two ECs. You will receive the FYF-credits when you’ve attended at least 80% of the choir rehearsals and information/instruction sessions, five workshop sessions of your own choice, you tutor meeting and the FYF concert. Please note that some workshops consist of two sessions. In order to receive the credits we ask you to sign the attendance lists. If you don’t get your two ECs this will be a serious obstacle for finishing your propaedeutic phase.

30 alEXanDER TECHnIQuEAlexander Technique is a practical method for learning awareness of the way mind and body act as a unity, and how this affects balance and co-ordination in response to whatever daily life throws at us. By looking at the ‘how’ of movement the Alexander Technique teacher educates students in self-awareness. The student learns how to prevent unhelpful habits and harmful patterns of response, which interfere with the good functioning of their whole system. The student therefore has a greater chance of fulfilling his or her technical and musical potential. Achieving more often means learning to do less!

If enough students subscribe, this workshop can lead to a Dutch language course during the study year.
