Creating the fictional superstore “Cloud 9,” from the ground up was a rollicking roller coaster of a ride for all involved. The Art Department’s initial challenge with the Pilot was to create a veritable “superstore” with all the vibrancy and pop the name implies. As we investigated scenarios that would imbue our show with the production value we knew it deserved, we recognized early that we could neither build and dress a store from scratch, nor film in a pre-existing store without the attachment of a giant corpora-tion and the attendant hoops and hurdles of approvals that such entities require. We chose instead to find the perfect location in which to create the bespoke look for “Cloud 9.”
Our hunt for the perfect superstore took us far and wide. The first weeks were spent in Austin, Texas, scouting shut down big box stores, but to no avail. Nothing felt right. When all hope felt lost, I contacted Kmart Corpo-rate with whom I had worked on Grown Ups 2. With their help, we were able to secure a fantastic location in Burbank: essentially a ginormous, empty white box. Alas, we had only three weeks left of preproduction! Tirelessly did the Art Department work creating the “Cloud 9” brand and redesigning the enormous blank canvas of our location.
While we were knee-deep in establishing the “look” of the show, we were also tasked with our next challenges: First, incorporating into the design

The Cloud 9 Logo was the result of many meetings between director Rubin Fleischer, production designer Aaron Osborne, and graphic designer Haley Keim. As the logo would be the backbone of the entire store, and therefore show, we wanted to create something that was as visually impactful as Target’s, but also contemporary and slightly whimsical, as the name “Cloud 9” implies. There were dozens and dozens of iterations, and endless phonecalls with legal before we landed on the perfect logo.

the shot list of our inimitable director, Rubin Fleischer, who very fastidiously storyboarded each scene; and, second, augmenting the lighting needs of the cinematographer who wanted to convey the feel of a superstore without losing the warmth of our storytelling; and, third, working with the Visual Effects Department to create the magical scene where the set is lit by only glow-in-the-dark stars. Every minute detail from the Cloud 9 logo, to the branded wallpaper to the fun jewelry counter was created by my team. Ultimately, the look of our beloved “Cloud 9” was so eye-popping and infectiously fun that even the Studio’s Advertising Department borrowed the branding we created for their own advertising.
The most fulfilling journeys are never easy and I count this experience among them. With respect to my team, there are not enough glowing words to describe them. I will content myself with these: Dedicated to an inspiring degree and jaw-droppingly amazing.

Pilot director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and production designer Aaron Osborne have
done well turning the ordered chaos of the big-box store into an environment packed with
opportunities for visual gags as well, whether blink-and-you-miss-it flyers on a cork board or
more elaborate constructions like a frowny face of precariously stacked beverage cans.”
