Dear Friends of Horizons, With family homelessness on the rise in Massachusetts and a pandemic that has deeply affected Horizons’ community and the world, this year has been marked by challenges. However, despite uncertain times, our team and supporters rose to those challenges and continued to make a difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness. The pandemic brought new obstacles and pressures that have impacted the homeless in profound ways. Our team responded by innovating to meet those emerging needs and kept us moving forward in the areas of child development, family support and advocacy. While our work and how we did it changed, our resolve to empower families creating better futures for themselves and their children only grew stronger.

When the COVID-19 crisis hit in March, while we had to observe a temporary shut-down in our childcare centers, we stepped up for our families in new ways providing groceries, hygiene products and gift cards so our families could buy much needed supplies. Our staff remained in constant contact with our families to provide guidance and support. We ensured that children quarantining in shelter had access to technology and toys that would keep them engaged and learning. As summer approached, we created and implemented new safety protocols so we could reopen our early education centers while keeping staff and children healthy and safe.

At the same time, we partnered with organizations across the state to advocate for legislative prioritization and funding that would better support families on the brink and early educators, an undervalued and yet critical part of our economic infrastructure. We expanded professional development opportunities for Horizons employees, and worked hard to continue to foster diversity, equity and inclusion within our organization.

As we reflect on our past successes, we also look to Horizons’ exciting future. Next year, we will open the doors of the Edgerley Family Horizons Center – our new headquarters and centralized location for all of our early education programs. Over the next several years Horizons will deepen our curriculum in the areas of STEM and Literacy, serve more children and families and give them on-site access to medical care and other much needed services to support their transitions into housing and economic self-sufficiency.

Our success in this trying year would not be possible without the many friends of Horizons who believe in our mission and the impact we make on families experiencing homelessness. On behalf of the leadership team, thank you for your support and commitment to the families we serve. Sincerely,

    Kate Barrand President & CEO

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSOver the past fiscal year, Horizons made great strides in our work. Here are just a few highlights:

We continued our work on behalf of children experiencing homelessness in Boston by offering free, high quality, trauma-sensitive early education at sites in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury.

    Early Education Centers

We partnered with Horizons’ parents by using a strengths based focus to support and empower them as they build skills and strategically set goals for a sustainable future.

    Family Partnerships Program

We provided the curriculum and volunteers to make playrooms in shelters a valuable resource to families. When physical access was limited due to the pandemic, our team quickly shifted to offer remote play with on-demand and live virtual sessions.

ON THE HORIZON... The Edgerley Family Horizons Center, coming Spring 2021

The Edgerley Family Horizons Center, opening in early 2021, will be a dynamic learning environment for children and a source of support and inspiration to their families. The state-of-the-art center will be a centralized location for Horizons’ early education centers and headquarters and will expand early education opportunities and resources for families experiencing homelessness in Boston. This new learning space will enable Horizons to serve 30% more children in an environment expressly

    designed for their needs.

A unique public/private joint venture, the Edgerley Center will create a single and accessible home for social service agencies dedicated to transforming the education, health and well-being of at-risk children and families in Boston.

The new building will officially open to the community spring 2021.

To find out more or arrange a tour, contact Tara Spalding at [email protected].
