Prisma Health is the largest, most comprehensive integrated

healthcare system in South Carolina. We’re on a journey to

transform the healthcare experience for our patients and their

families. That’s why our team members are dedicated to living our

purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.

Our locally owned, not-for-profit organization houses two 501(c)(3) foundations in the Midlands; the Upstate has

two 501(c)(3) foundations along with a philanthropy department. Philanthropic efforts in fiscal year 2019 (FY19)

totaled $20.6 million, thanks to more than 18,000 generous donors.

Prisma Health is supported by a network of physicians and advanced practice providers in the Palmetto Health-

USC Medical Group and the Prisma Health Midlands Network. In the Upstate, these groups are called University

Medical Group and the Prisma Health Upstate Network.

As an academic health center, we train the next generation of physicians through 50 residency and fellowship

programs affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.

Community impact

Prisma Health annually reports its community benefit figures. Net cost of charity and Medicaid services and support to the community and community health partners are reported using guidelines set by the Catholic Health Association.

We also include bad debt and Medicare shortfall figures, as those are taken at a loss to our organization in the interest of providing care to all patients.

The percentage of operating expense for our health company was 18.68%.

Milestones Mark O’Halla joined our organization as the new president and CEO in July 2019. He comes with more than 30

years of experience in healthcare executive roles.

The organization marked the 45th anniversary of the OB/GYN Center in Greenville and 80th anniversary of

Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca.

Under its Community Oncology Research Program, the National Cancer Institute awarded $8.2 million to

Prisma Health’s Cancer Institute. Our institute was one of only 32 nationwide to receive a program grant.

Greenville Memorial Hospital performed the 100th implant of the CardioMEMS™ HF System, a heart failure

monitoring device that significantly reduces hospital admissions. Only 20 U.S. hospitals have implanted as many

CardioMEMS devices; Richland has completed more than 170 implants – the fourth highest in the country.

Awards and honorsOne of the year’s biggest achievements was recognition by U.S. News & World

Report in several healthcare categories – including Greenville Memorial being

ranked among the nation’s Top 50 hospitals in gynecology care. That facility was

also rated a High Performer in heart failure and in colon cancer surgery.

Other High Performer hospitals for heart failure were Oconee Memorial, Richland

and Tuomey. Oconee Memorial and Richland hospitals also were lauded for their

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) services. High Performers for knee

and hip replacements were Baptist and Patewood hospitals, while Greer Memorial

Hospital was noted for knee replacements and overall orthopedic care.

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) Get With

The Guidelines program honored Richland Hospital with the Heart Failure Gold

Plus Quality Achievement Award. Baptist Parkridge Hospital received Silver Plus

distinction. Richland Hospital was further tapped by the AHA/ASA with the Center

Gold Award for Lifeline–STEMI services. It also achieved Stroke Gold Plus with

Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus status.

Additionally, Richland Hospital was the recipient of the Silver Performance Award

from the American College of Cardiology’s Chest Pain–MI Registry. The hospital

not only earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, but it also

garnered three Resuscitation Gold awards: adult, pediatric and neonate. Winning

a silver award in the neonate category was Baptist Hospital, which also received a

Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Six Prisma Health hospitals amassed 10 Women’s Choice Awards for meeting high

standards. This award identifies the country’s best health entities based on recent

data and accreditation information regarding clinical excellence and the preferences

of women when selecting a hospital. Hillcrest earned a Women’s Choice Award

for bariatric surgery. Greenville Memorial was honored for breast, cancer and heart

care; Baptist was also lauded for breast care. Greer Memorial received recognition

for obstetrics and patient safety. Baptist Parkridge won awards for obstetrics and

orthopedics, while Richland was named for its heart care.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and its state chapter recognized Children’s Hospital–

Upstate and our Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Program for outstanding awareness,

fundraising and advocacy efforts. Just 14 of the 200+ nationally accredited

programs in cystic fibrosis won a national award.

With a compliance rate of 98.5%, North Greenville Hospital received the national

2019 DebMed award for Hand Hygiene Compliance Excellence. The hospital uses

the DebMed electronic system, which monitors proper hand hygiene.

Strategic Health Partners honored the Upstate’s Home Health unit for Best Home

Health Patient Satisfaction. Home Health scored in the top 20% nationally for

delivering superior quality to patients.

Last, 11 Prisma Health hospitals received an impressive 37 Certified Zero Harm

Awards from the S.C. Hospital Association in 2019. These safety milestones span

12–76 continuous months of protecting our patients by preventing a variety of

hospital-acquired infections.

New programs and servicesPrevent Cancer–Greenville is a unique Prisma Health program that strives to prevent cancer two ways: Help

individuals identify and reduce their risk through screenings and lifestyle changes, and conduct research to better

identify cancers in the future. A yearly visit for those age 18+ includes a complete health risk analysis, education

and referrals. The initial and ongoing annual visits are free, thanks to philanthropic support.

Our Heart Hospital performed the first leaking aortic valve repair in South Carolina using a new FDA-approved

device. In the past, most affected patients required valve replacement, which carries higher long-term risk than

implanting this new technology.

Baptist Parkridge campus was home to an innovative procedure for diagnosing and treating uterine fibroids,

which involves two small incisions and a three-to-five-day recovery period. The campus is the only location in

the Carolinas that offers this treatment option.

Two new programs in the Upstate are Addiction Medicine, offering medication-assisted treatment for those with

opioid use disorders, including heroin. Located in the Internal Medicine Clinic, the program includes an on-site

substance abuse counselor, recovery coach and care coordinator. The second service is Medical Toxicology,

which focuses on diagnosing, managing and preventing poisoning from medications, overdose, withdrawal,

and occupational or environmental toxins. The only toxicologist in the Upstate runs the service – he is one of

four statewide. In the Midlands, a pediatric hospitalist service began at Tuomey Hospital. This program helps

hospitalized children and their families in the Sumter area stay close to home.

In academic news, this year marked the launch of the Sumter-based Family Medicine Residency Program. Based

at Tuomey Hospital and in collaboration with Tandem Health in Sumter, the residency represents a major step in

improving healthcare access in our state’s rural areas through education and training programs.

Accreditations, certifications, designations Richland Hospital earned the AHA/ASA’s prestigious Heart-Check mark for

Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers – the only facility in the

Midlands to attain elite stroke status. Greer Memorial Hospital was named by those

same organizations as achieving Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.

The Family Medicine Center received CenteringPregnancy accreditation – the

fourth family practice in South Carolina to gain this status and the first in the

Midlands. This program offers affordable prenatal care to those who lack access

to insurance.

Other accreditations include the Epilepsy Center at Greenville Memorial Hospital

achieving Level 4 (highest) from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, one of

only two such centers in the Palmetto State. Both Greenville Memorial and Oconee

Memorial hospitals garnered reaccreditation from the American Association of

Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Rehabilitation for their HeartLife® programs.

Richland Hospital earned Advanced Heart Failure certification from The Joint

Commission and American Heart Association for providing exceptional, patient-

centric cardiac care. The Joint Commission also recertified the hospital for

excellence in Ventricular Assist Devices.

Our Cancer Institute received three reaccreditations: one from the Commission on

Cancer, one from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers through

collaborative efforts with the Prisma Health Breast Health Program and one from

the American College of Radiology. The institute’s Blood and Marrow Transplant

Program received reaccreditation from the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular

Therapy.

Tuomey Hospital earned Pathway to Excellence® designation from the American

Nurses Credentialing Center. This program recognizes environments in which

nurses can flourish and be empowered. In addition, Patewood Hospital was

redesignated a Pathway to Excellence hospital and received advanced hip and knee

certification from The Joint Commission, along with core shoulder recertification.

The Diabetes Prevention Program at Prisma Health received Full Recognition from

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, signaling the program is effective,

evidence-based and helps prevent type 2 diabetes.

For nine years running, Laurens County Hospital has been named a Center

of Distinction by Healogics. This designation signals that the hospital delivers

exceptional wound care services and outcomes.

Greenville Memorial Hospital was redesignated as Baby-Friendly, which means it offers optimal care for

breastfeeding moms and their babies. Receiving Baby-Friendly status for the first time was Baptist Easley Hospital.

Already designated as a Baby-Friendly hospital, Greer Memorial opened a Level II Special Care Nursery.

Finally, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina designated several Prisma Health hospitals as a Blue Distinction

Center (BDC) for maternity care: Baptist, Baptist Easley, Baptist Parkridge, Laurens County, Oconee Memorial,

Richland and Tuomey. Greenville Memorial and Greer Memorial hospitals reached Blue Distinction Center+

(BDC+) status.

Baptist Hospital was deemed a BDC+ for bariatric surgery, with Hillcrest Hospital earning BDC designation. BDC

honors for spine surgery went to Baptist, Baptist Parkridge, Greenville Memorial and Richland hospitals. Knee and

hip replacement BDC designations were awarded to Oconee Memorial, Baptist Parkridge and Richland hospitals.

Both Richland and Greenville Memorial hospitals were named a BDC for cardiac care.

Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated hospitals that demonstrate expertise in delivering specialty

care. A Blue Distinction Center+ shows expertise – and efficiency – in delivering specialty care.
